LOS ANGELES - This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Cheech & Chong's debut film UP IN SMOKE ,a cultural breakthrough that created the "stoner film" genre. In celebration of the anniversary, Rhino will release a very special Cheech & Chong single on Record Store Day: a 7-inch vinyl in the shape of a marijuana leaf, complete with a marijuana-scented "scratch and sniff" sticker. The single features the original version of the film's title song "Up In Smoke" on the one-side and a previously unreleased version of the song with an additional Spanish verse by Cheech on the other side.

The 7-inch, limited to 4500 individually numbered copies, will be available exclusively at independent record stores on Record Store Day on April 21. Please visit www.recordstoreday.com for a list of participating stores.

The day before (4/20) will see the release of Rhino's Deluxe Collector's Edition of UP IN SMOKE, a beautiful boxed set, limited to 5,000 copies, that pairs the newly released Blu-ray with the original soundtrack on CD and VINYL LP, as well as a 7-inch picture disc, oversized "Up In Smoke" rolling papers, a film poster, and booklet with new essays by both Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, along with rare and unseen photos. The Deluxe Collector's Edition also includes a newly recorded "2018 version" of the title song "Up In Smoke."

UP IN SMOKE 40th Anniversary Deluxe Collector's Edition (Blu-Ray/CD/VINYL LP) (Rhino)

The UP IN SMOKE Deluxe Collector's Edition comes housed in a 12x12 six-panel gatefold package and is
limited to 5,000 copies. The set features the Blu-ray as well as the following:

"Earache My Eye," other music from the film, and audio clips from the film

Cheech
• "2018 version" of "Up In Smoke"

VINYL LP

• Original soundtrack album on vinyl. Back in print for the first time since its initial release in 1978

Picture Disc

Extras

• Oversized "Up In Smoke" usable rolling papers
• 11x17 film poster with original, tagline "Don't Go Straight To See This Movie"
• Booklet with new essays by both Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong along with rare and unseen

UP IN SMOKE will make its debut on Blu-ray the week before, when the film arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on April 10 from Paramount Home Media Distribution. The UP IN SMOKE Blu-ray Combo Pack features a brand new short-form documentary entitled "How Pedro Met the Man: Up In Smoke at 40," which chronicles the duo's comedy history, as well as the origins and impact of the film itself. Capturing a complex and fascinating pop culture odyssey, the documentary incorporates new interviews with Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong and producer/director Lou Adler along with archival footage. The Combo Pack is also loaded with previously released bonus material including deleted scenes, commentary, a music video and more.

In 1978, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong made their feature film debut in UP IN SMOKE . The outrageously funny classic was inspired by their now legendary comedy routines of the early '70s. Following massive success with over 10 million comedy albums sold, four Grammy nominations and a win for Best Comedy Recording for "Los Cochinos," Cheech and Chong took Hollywood by storm when UP IN SMOKE became a smash hit, establishing the pair as the reigning comedy duo of a new generation. Today, the film still has viewers rolling in the aisles and maintains surprising cultural relevance four decades after its original release.

"The greatest thrill is making your first movie and this one has been seen and been influential all over the world for over forty years," said Richard "Cheech" Marin. "Up in Smoke started stoner movies and is still going strong so smoke it up one more time."

"Where did the time go? 40 years ago we made low budget movies that grossed over 100 million and are still being watched all over the world! And it also helped legalize an important medicine," said Thomas Chong. "I am so proud that a movie bearing a title of a simple song I wrote would be so influential for so many years."

THE FLAMING LIPS REVISIT RESTLESS ERA

Rhino Celebrates Oklahoma's Fearless Freaks With Two Newly Remastered
Collections Of Their Early Work

A Single-Disc Compilation Will Be Available April 20
Followed By A Six-CD Boxed Set On June 29

LOS ANGELES - The Flaming Lips have pushed the envelope and bent boundaries for more than two decades with the band's Grammy®-winning music and ground-breaking concerts. This year, Rhino and Warner Bros. Records will celebrate Oklahoma's most famous freaks with an ambitious reissue program, kicking off with two releases that spotlight the joyous weirdness the band recorded for Restless Records before signing with Warner Bros. in 1991.

It begins with SCRATCHING THE DOOR: THE FIRST RECORDINGS OF THE FLAMING LIPS, a single-disc compilation that features music recorded by the band's original lineup. The 19-track collection will be available on April 20 for $14.98. It will be followed by SEEING THE UNSEEABLE: THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS OF THE FLAMING LIPS 1986-1990, a six-CD boxed set that includes their four Restless Records studio albums and two discs of rarities, available on June 29 for $34.98. Both releases will also be available on digital download and streaming services, with over 40 tracks making their digital debut. 2018 also sees a slew of vinyl reissues from The Flaming Lips, including remasters of the Restless albums. These will feature some tracks appearing on vinyl for the very first time.

All of the music on SCRATCHING THE DOOR and SEEING THE UNSEEABLE has been remastered from original sources by the band's longtime musical foil and producer, David Fridmann with help from the Lips' Wayne Coyne and Michael Ivins.

SCRATCHING THE DOOR highlights tracks recorded by The Flaming Lips' original line-up, which featured Wayne Coyne's brother Mark on vocals. The album includes the band's first and second cassette demos, in addition to The Flaming Lips first self-released EP, which has been remastered from the original 1/4" analog tape master. This marks the first time all of these recordings have been collected together on a single release. Among the other featured tracks are covers of The Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown" and the theme song from the 1960's Batman television series, which previously appeared on Rykodisc's 2002 compilation, Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid.

SEEING THE UNSEEABLE brings back into print (physically - they are available digitally) all four studio albums that the band released on Restless Records between 1984 and 1990: Hear It Is (1986), Oh My Gawd!!!...The Flaming Lips (1987), Telepathic Surgery (1989) and In A Priest Driven Ambulance (With Silver Sunshine Stares) (1990). All of these have been remastered from the original 1/4" analog tape masters and include sonic treasures such as "Godzilla Flick," "Unconsciously Screaming," "One Million Billionth Of A Millisecond On A Sunday Morning" and their cover of the classic "(What A) Wonderful World."

The set is also packed with rare recordings originally released as b-sides, flexi discs, and on various compilations like, the Sub Pop single "Strychnine/Peace, Love And Understanding" and a cover of "After The Gold Rush" from a 1989 Neil Young tribute album Also included is The Mushroom Tapes, the series of demos for the band's final Restless album, In A Priest Driven Ambulance, only previously issued on the Rykodisc compilation CD, The Day They Shot A Hole In the Jesus Egg.

In advance of Led Zeppelin’s 50th Anniversary celebration, slated to commence this September, the band will whet fan’s appetites with their first ever release for Record Store Day on April 21. The limited edition 7-inch single is produced by Jimmy Page and pressed on yellow vinyl.  The single will feature two previously unheard studio mixes, handpicked by Page to appear on the release: the “Sunset Sound Mix” of “Rock And Roll” b/w the “Olympic Studios Mix” of “Friends.”

The previously unreleased version of “Rock And Roll” provides an additional peak into the fabled “Sunset Sound Mixes” of Led Zeppelin IV. Only two previous “Sunset Sound Mixes” have been released, the first being the well-known version of “When The Levee Breaks” on the original album and the second the “Stairway To Heaven” mix that debuted on 2014 companion disc in the deluxe edition. The previously unheard “Olympic Studios Mix” of “Friends” is a stripped-down version, without the orchestration of the final mix.

ORNETTE COLEMAN'S ATLANTIC YEARS ON VINYL

Ten-LP Collection Includes All Six Studio Albums Coleman Recorded With Atlantic Records Between 1959 And 1961, Plus More Than Two Hours Of Session Outtakes

Set For Release On May 25 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES - Ornette Coleman recorded one of the greatest bodies of work in jazz during a 22-month-long burst of creativity. Between 1959 and 1961, the saxophonist and composer released six studio albums on Atlantic Records that helped usher in the avant-garde, free jazz movement.

Those albums, along more than two hours of session outtakes, are featured together in the 10-LP boxed set ORNETTE COLEMAN: THE ATLANTIC YEARS, featuring newly remastered audio by John Webber at AIR Studios. Several of these titles are long out-of-print on vinyl. The Ornette Coleman Legacy, featuring six songs originally released for the first time in 1993 as part of Rhino's CD boxed set Beauty Is A Rare Thing, making its vinyl debut. The new vinyl set from Rhino will be available on May 25 for $174.98.

The LPs are presented in replica European-style 1960s jackets in a side-loading slipcase along with a 12 x 12 booklet with new liner notes written by renowned author-music critic Ben Ratliff, plus rare pictures taken by legendary jazz photographer Lee Friedlander.

The albums featured in the set are: The Shape Of Jazz To Come (1959), Change Of The Century (1959), This Is Our Music (1960), Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation (1960), Ornette! (1961), Ornette On Tenor (1961), The Art Of Improvisers (1970), Twins (1971), To Whom Who Keeps A Record (1975), and The Ornette Coleman Legacy (1993.)

On most of his Atlantic albums, Coleman recorded with a quartet that included trumpeter Don Cherry, plus either Charlie Haden or Scott LaFaro on bass, and either Billy Higgins or Ed Blackwell on drums. One notable exception is Free Jazz, a ground-breaking single-track album where Coleman led a double quartet through a nearly 40-minute collective improvisation. The stereo mix used for the album separates the quartets into different channels; one on the right and the other on the left.

Coleman worked extensively with producer Nesuhi Ertegun on the music featured in this collection. Their partnership began in 1959 with Coleman's Atlantic debut, The Shape of Jazz To Come, an album the Library of Congress added to its National Recording Registry in 2012.

Among the albums included in THE ATLANTIC YEARS are three compilations that Atlantic released in the 1970's: The Art Of Improvisers (1970), Twins (1971), and To Whom Who Keeps A Record (1975.) These albums include outtakes from recording sessions for all six of Coleman's studio albums.
