TONY JOE WHITE HAS THAT ON THE ROAD LOOK

Rhino Handmade Preserves Unreleased 1971 Album By The “Swamp Fox”
Packed With More Than An Hour Of “Whomper Stomper” Action

Pre-Order Exclusively From Rhino.com Now, Available August 24

LOS ANGELES – Before his song “Polk Salad Annie” went Top 10 in 1969, Tony Joe White learned how to put on a good show as a survival skill while paying his dues in some of Texas and Louisiana’s roughest honky-tonks. His hit led to a U.S. tour where unsuspecting audiences were mesmerized by the guitarist’s fiery performances and his frenzied command of the whomper stomper (aka wah-wah pedal).

Rhino Handmade preserves an unreleased 1971 live album from the self-styled Swamp Fox with THAT ON THE ROAD LOOK. The album’s 12 unreleased performances find White locked in watertight with his longtime drummer Sammy Creason and keyboardist Michael Utley along with legendary bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn. The live set is available for pre-order now exclusively at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $19.98 and is set for release on August 24.

Thought to be a rumor for the longest time, not much is known about this unreleased treasure, including the exact location where it was recorded. One thing is certain, the boys rip the roof off of wherever they are for more than an hour, mixing cuts from White’s 1971 Warner Bros. debut—“A Night In The Life Of A Swamp Fox” and “Traveling Bone”—with his earlier recordings for Monument Records—“Roosevelt And Ira Lee” and a 10-minute rave-up of “Polk Salad Annie.” THAT ON THE ROAD LOOK also spotlights White’s uncanny ability to make every song his own with a cover of T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday.”

Writing in the album’s liner notes, Ben Vaughn says: “What we have here is Exhibit A, proof that the self-named Swamp Fox was a bona fide barnstormer. Or barn burner. Or both. When you cue up this disc, Tony Joe and his three-piece band are already in fourth gear. Later for that lazy, laid-back vibe. What we have here is a sense of purpose.”

As for the origin of the album, White believes it could have been recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in London during a tour opening for Creedence Clearwater Revival. White recalls the tour vividly in the liner notes: “Creedence tried to burn us down and we tried to burn them down, ’cause they were goin’ around, ‘Swamp this and swamp that,’ and ol’ Duck and me was real tight—we were fishin’ buddies and we got talkin’ one night, and he told ’em, ‘You know, Fogerty, there ain’t no alligators in Berkeley.’ From then on, it was war every night onstage.”

THE QUEEN OF SOUL GOES QUADRAPHONIC

Rhino Handmade Reissues 1973’s The Best Of Aretha Franklin As DTS DVD
With Unique Quad Mixes Of Soul Classics Not Available Since The Original Release

Pre-Order Today Exclusively At Rhino.com, Out August 17

LOS ANGELES – For its second Quadio release, Rhino Handmade gives “Respect” to one of the greatest singers of all time with a reissue of The Best Of Aretha Franklin, a collection of stone-classic soul music that was released in 1973 exclusively in Quadraphonic. Out-of-print for decades, this music-only DVD features unique quad mixes by legendary producer Tom Dowd that have not been available since the original release.

THE BEST OF ARETHA FRANKLIN (QUADRAPHONIC MIX) is available for pre-order now exclusively at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $29.98 and will be released August 17. Featuring four channels of 24-bit, 96 kHz audio (down-scalable to 24-bit, 48 kHz), this DTS DVD is to be played in a DVD player with Surround Sound in order to enjoy the Quadraphonic mix as intended. The release does not include a two-channel stereo mix.

THE BEST OF ARETHA FRANKLIN (QUADRAPHONIC MIX) contains 12 tracks, including an extended version of “Rock Steady” with music by the Memphis Horns that was cut from the stereo version and can only be heard in this Quadraphonic mix. The disc also includes a rare version of “Chain Of Fools” with an extended introduction. This version was released in stereo in 1995 as part of Rhino’s expanded edition of Lady Soul.

These songs spotlight Franklin during her white-hot run with Atlantic Records and capture the singer at the pinnacle of her hitmaking prowess. The collection opens with “Respect,” a song that topped both the Pop and R&B charts in 1967 and went on to become the singer’s signature hit. The disc gathers many of the Queen of Soul’s crown jewels and accounts for no less than eight #1 R&B hits, including “Baby, I Love You,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Don’t Play That Song, “Call Me,” and a cover of the Simon and Garfunkel ballad “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

One of the earliest offerings of what would later be known as Surround Sound, Quadraphonic sound uses four channels and speakers placed in four corners of a room to create signals that are independent of one another. JUNO DELIVERS A GRAMMY ® FOR RHINO

Soundtrack to the Oscar®-Winning Comedy Wins
First Grammy at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards

Soundtrack, Vinyl, Ringtones, B-Sides, & Deluxe Edition
Are All Available Now From Rhino Records

LOS ANGELES –On Sunday, February 8, The Recording Academy awarded director Jason Reitman and producer Margaret Yen with the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for JUNO: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE. The 19-track release includes eight songs by Kimya Dawson plus an eclectic mix of music by Buddy Holly, Cat Power, Mott The Hoople, The Kinks, Sonic Youth, and Belle & Sebastian. The phenomenal success of the Academy Awardâ-winning film was matched by the soundtrack’s popularity; it has become one of the best-selling digital albums of all time.

Rhino opened its 30th-anniversary year last year with a bang, landing the company’s first #1 on the Billboard 200 and digital album charts with the JUNO soundtrack. The soundtrack also spawned a sequel earlier last year with the digital-only release JUNO B-SIDES: ALMOST ADOPTED SONGS. The Junoverse continued to expand as a limited-edition orange vinyl version of the JUNO soundtrack was released on February 18, 2008. February 2008 also brought a JUNO ringtone, Ellen Page and costar Michael Cera’s cover of The Moldy Peaches’ “Anyone Else But You,” available from all major carriers. And on November 25, 2008 Rhino released JUNO: DELUXE EDITION, a double-disc collection that includes both the original soundtrack along with JUNO B-SIDES: ALMOST ADOPTED SONGS. This collectible set also includes a 16-page booklet with never-before-seen storyboards and photos.

"The success of this soundtrack and its recent Grammy win is a tribute to Diablo, Kimya, and Ellen, three incredibly talented women whose shoulders this soundtrack stands on. I look forward to chipping the Grammy into pieces and sending them each a piece,” says director Jason Reitman.

Directed by Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) and written by Diablo Cody, JUNO, a Fox Searchlight Pictures feature, was nominated for four Academy Awards and won for Best Original Screenplay. The quirky charm of the film’s music was an integral part of the movie, which resonated deeply with fans.

STEPHEN STILLS YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Rhino Gathers Unreleased Studio Recordings By Manassas
For A Single Disc Collection Available September 22

Stills’ Career-Spanning Performance At Shepherd’s Bush Last Year
Captured In CD/DVD Set Available October 27

LOS ANGELES – Stephen Stills has influenced generations with his powerful voice, songwriting artistry, and passionate guitar playing, both as a solo artist and as a member of Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Manassas. While Stills spends his summer on the road with David Crosby and Graham Nash, Rhino presents a pair of new releases that reveal snapshots of Stills, both yesterday and today.

The first, MANASSAS - PIECES, collects unreleased recordings from sessions for both of the band’s albums. The 15-song disc will be available September 22 from Rhino Records at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $13.98 (physical) and $10.99 (digital). The second, LIVE AT SHEPHERD’S BUSH, captures Stills’ career-spanning performance at the famed London venue last year. The CD/DVD set will be available October 27 for a suggested list price of $24.98 (physical) and $13.99 (digital – CD only).

After recording his second solo album, Stills formed Manassas in 1971 with a talented group of musicians that included Chris Hillman, a former member of the Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Manassas released two albums, 1972’s eponymous double-album debut and the 1973 follow-up, Down The Road. MANASSAS - PIECES features alternate versions of two songs from Down The Road: “Do You Remember The Americans” and “Lies” (featuring guitarist Joe Walsh). The collection also includes the legendary group’s unreleased performances of “Sugar Babe” and “Word Game,” a pair of songs Stills recorded in 1971 for his second solo album. The remaining tracks include “Like A Fox,” a song recorded with blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt on background vocals and the Latin-tinged “Tan Sola Y Triste” (Spanish for ‘So Alone and Sad’).

Last fall, Stills played a career-spanning concert at Shepherds Bush that was captured for LIVE AT SHEPHERD’S BUSH, a CD/DVD set. Playing both solo-acoustic and full band sets, Stills touched on nearly every facet of his prolific career: Buffalo Springfield (“Bluebird,” “For What It’s Worth,” “Rock & Roll Woman”); CSN (“Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,”), early solo (“Love The One You’re With,” Manassas (“Isn’t It About Time”); and later solo work (“Treetop Flyer,” “Wounded World”). Other highlights include covers of Bob Dylan’s “Girl From The North Country” and Tom Petty’s “Wrong Thing To Do.”

LEGENDARY NEW YORK DOLLS TO RELEASE
’CAUSE I SEZ SO MAY 5 ON ATCO RECORDS

Iconic Band Reunites With Famed Producer Todd Rundgren For
Fourth Studio Album; Set Includes New Version of “Trash”

U.S. Tour Begins In May

LOS ANGELES — After working together on the New York Dolls’ influential debut in 1973, the group reunited with producer Todd Rundgren this winter to record their fourth studio album, ’Cause I Sez So, set for a May 5 release on Atco Records.

Recorded at Utopia Sound Studio in Kauai, Hawaii, with David Johansen (vocals); Sylvain Sylvain (guitar); Steve Conte (guitar); Brian Delaney (drums); and Sami Yaffa (bass), the album features 11 original compositions and a new version of “Trash,” which was on their 1973 debut album. “It was amazing working with Todd again, and I think we were able to evoke the special sound of our first album and drag it by the hair into the present,” says frontman Johansen.

The New York Dolls swaggered onto the New York music scene in the early ’70s, influencing a generation with its subversive mix of high-decibel rock and high-heeled androgyny. The original band recorded a pair of milestone records—New York Dolls (1973) and Too Much Too Soon (1974)—before breaking up in 1977. The surviving members reformed the group in 2004 to much acclaim, but soon lost bassist Arthur Kane to leukemia. Two years later, Johansen and Sylvain reunited again to record the New York Dolls’ third studio album, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This.
