LOS ANGELES — Much has been written about the significance of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair as a cultural event. Ironically, what has been least examined up to now is the very thing that brought nearly half a million together in 1969: the music itself. As the historic festival marks its 40-year anniversary, Rhino presents WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR’S FARM, a 77-song, six-CD collection that features the most comprehensive collection ever available of artists that performed at the original festival, sequenced in chronological order of performance, featuring 38 previously unreleased recordings, including the Grateful Dead, The Who, Tim Hardin, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, and others. WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR’S FARM will be available August 11 at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $79.98.

To assemble the most comprehensive document of the myth-steeped weekend, the boxed set’s co-producer Andy Zax pored over every inch of multitrack tape in search of the strongest parts of each of the 33 sets. “The way we approached all of the material was as if it was a cinéma verité documentary—the raw record of the event,” Zax says. In addition to the music, the set offers considerable amount of ancillary material sprinkled throughout the discs—stage announcements, lysergic babble, the sounds of rain, a cameo appearance by Abbie Hoffman, and the graciousness of Max Yasgur’s address to the crowd, heard for the first time in its entirety.

Another significant byproduct of WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM is that, by virtue of its size and rigorously chronological sequence, it gets closer to a sense of the performances as they occurred in real time than any previous compilation. For the first time, the complete and accurate set lists will be available in the boxed set’s booklet. Some Woodstock aficionados will be taken aback by the actual order of the performances; it differs from both various written accounts and from Michael Wadleigh’s film Woodstock, which takes certain liberties with chronology in order to maintain its narrative flow.

In addition to the boxed set, Rhino will also reissue the long out-of-print MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK and WOODSTOCK TWO on June 2, simultaneously with Warner Home Video’s reissue of the documentary film Woodstock. Originally released in 1970 as a triple-LP, MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK topped Billboard’s Pop album chart for four weeks, and was a Top 20 R&B album as well.

Following the chart-topping, multiplatinum success of the original soundtrack, 1971’s WOODSTOCK TWO served up even more peace and music. Originally released as a double-LP, it expands the listening experience with 16 additional performances. Each set was remastered from the original analog soundboard tapes from the historic 1969 concert, and the release features rare photos and new liner notes. Both double-CD sets will be available June 2 for a suggested list price of $24.98 each.

WIZARD STILL WONDERFUL AT 70

As Classic Film Marks Milestone, Rhino Debuts Digital Version of
Deluxe Edition Soundtrack With More Than An Hour of Rare Recordings

Available From Rhino September 29

LOS ANGELES – The Wizard of Oz turned 70 this summer, yet the film has never sounded better. Rhino takes listeners over the rainbow and beyond with its definitive version of the timeless soundtrack, which includes more than an hour of rare outtakes and alternate versions. THE WIZARD OF OZ: ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK – DELUXE EDITION will be available digitally for the first time September 29 from Rhino Records at all digital outlets for a suggested list price of $24.99.

The 82-track collection will be released online the same day Warner Home Video unveils the 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition on Blu-Ray, a set that includes a newly restored version of the iconic film starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr. As part of the film’s anniversary, Rhino is also offering a number of Wizard of Oz ringtones, including “Over The Rainbow,” “We’re Off To See The Wizard” and “The Merry Old Land Of Oz.” Each ringtone is available for a suggested list price of $2.99.

THE WIZARD OF OZ: ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK – DELUXE EDITION contains the 1939 film’s entire soundtrack, from Herbert Stothart’s Academy Award®-winning score to unforgettable songs like “Over The Rainbow,” which earned its writers, Harold Arlen and E.Y. “Yip” Harburg, the Academy Award® for Best Song. Other instantly recognizable songs included here are “Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead,” “We’re Off To See The Wizard” and “Lollipop Guild,” from the memorable Munchkinland medley.

Going beyond the original soundtrack, the Deluxe Edition offers more than an hour of music not featured in the film. Among the rare outtakes are extended versions of “If I Only Had A Brain” and “If I Only Had A Heart”; alternate takes of “Over The Rainbow” and “Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead”; demos performed by Arlen and Harburg; and an unused version of “If I Only Had A Heart” featuring Buddy Ebsen, who was originally cast as the Tin Man.

The Deluxe Edition also features all the songs cut from the film after it was previewed in 1939. To reduce the film’s two-hour running time, director Victor Fleming and producer Mervyn LeRoy removed several songs, including “Jitterbug” and reprises of “Over the Rainbow” and “Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead.”

RHINO LACES UP THE SKATES FOR WHIP IT

Soundtrack To Drew Barrymore’s Directorial Debut About All-Girl Roller Derby
Mixes Indie Stars The Go! Team, Peaches, and Jens Lekman With Memorable
Music From the Ramones, .38 Special, The Breeders, and Dolly Parton

Available from Rhino September 29

LOS ANGELES – Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Fox Searchlight Pictures’ Whip It, a coming-of-age-on-wheels comedy set in the wild world of all-girl roller derby. Premiering October 2 in theaters nationwide, the film stars Academy Award® nominee Ellen Page, Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis and Barrymore. WHIP IT – MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE will be available from Rhino Records September 29 at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $13.98 (physical) and $11.99 (digital). Later this fall, the soundtrack will also be available on a special collectible vinyl.

The girl-power-meets-punk-rock spirit of the music featured in Whip It plays an integral role in telling the story, from setting the film’s rebellious tone to celebrating its characters’ wild individuality. Barrymore says music was frequently played on the movie set, where a hot-pink boom box was her constant companion. “We spent countless hours listening to as many different songs as possible, always searching for just the right song for just the right moment,” she says. “Some of these songs were inspirational to us from very early on in the process, and really set the tone in our minds of the movie we were trying to make.”

Conceived as a mix tape, the soundtrack’s 19 songs are peppered with talented young artists like Belgian electro-rockers Goose (“Black Gloves”), Mercury Prize nominees The Go! Team (“Doing It Right”), L.A. beat-punks The Ettes (“Crown Of Age”), Rolling Stone Artist to Watch Apollo Sunshine (“Breeze”), Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman, Nebraska indie-pop quintet Tilly And The Wall (“Pot Kettle Black”), and Peaches’ raunchy fun (“Boys Wanna Be Her”).

The up-and-comers appear along with a diverse selection that includes the Ramones (“Sheena Is A Punk Rocker”), The Breeders (“Bang On”), Dolly Parton (“Jolene”), The Raveonettes (“Dead Sound”) and .38 Special (“Caught Up In You”). Singer-songwriter Landon Pigg appears in the film and is also featured on the soundtrack, performing “HighTimes” with the Turbo Fruits. The soundtrack also features contributions from The Section Quartet, a group of composers with a knack for turning popular rock songs into string quartet compositions.

The film stars Page, who was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in the 2007 comedy Juno. For Whip It, Page plays Bliss Cavender, an indie-music-loving Texas teen who dreams of escaping her tiny, truck-stop town. While her beauty-pageant-obsessed mother (Harden) dreams of her daughter winning the coveted Miss Bluebonnet crown, Bliss discovers the liberating power of roller derby in nearby Austin.

Inspired by local roller derby stars (played by Barrymore, Wiig and Lewis), Bliss secretly tries out for a spot on the Hurl Scouts, a rag-tag team of scrappy underdogs. Soon, she’s skating as a “jammer,” taking on the nickname Babe Ruthless, facing off with her bad-ass rival, Iron Maven (Lewis) and falling for her biggest fan (Pigg). But when her secret gets out, Bliss faces her toughest fight yet, taking control of her own future. Rounding out a dynamic ensemble cast, Whip It also features Eve, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern, Alia Shawkat, Ari Graynor, and Zoe Bell.

UP IN THE AIR TAKES OFF

Rhino Presents Soundtrack To Latest Jason Reitman Film, Including
CSNY, Elliott Smith, Dan Auerbach, Sad Brad Smith, And Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Available From Rhino December 1

LOS ANGELES – Paramount Pictures presents in association with Cold Springs Pictures and DW Studios Up In The Air, a film by Jason Reitman – the Oscar®-nominated director of Juno. Due in theaters nationwide this December, the film stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizer and consummate modern business traveler who, after years of staying happily airborne, suddenly finds himself ready to make a real connection. Rhino fastens its seat belt for the film’s musical journey with a collection of songs compiled by Reitman, who previously won a Grammy® for the Juno soundtrack. UP IN THE AIR: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE will be available December 1 from Rhino Records at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $13.98 (physical) and $9.99 (digital).

The soundtrack, Reitman says, is like a character in the film. “I start thinking about the music very early on. While I’m writing the script, I’m putting together a matching iTunes library. The result is a collection of songs that speaks to the nature of travel and warmth of human connection.”

The film and soundtrack both open with a funky, contemporary cover of Woody Guthrie’s working-class American classic “This Land Is Your Land” by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. “It’s a really lovely, soulful entrance to the journey of this film about the American landscape,” Reitman says.

UP IN THE AIR includes two previously unreleased tracks with unique personal connections to Reitman. The first is “Help Yourself” by Chicago-based singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith. Reitman discovered Smith through his brother-in-law, who became a fan after seeing a performance by Smith at a Chicago coffee shop. The second track, “Up In The Air” by Kevin Renick, was personally handed to Reitman on a cassette during a speaking engagement in St. Louis. A recently laid off Renick had heard Reitman was working on a film adaptation to the popular book and had written this song with the story in mind. The track, complete with Renick’s spoken word introduction included on the original cassette, now plays over the end credits.

The soundtrack also includes “Thank You Lord,” from legendary guitarist Roy Buchanan’s 1973 Second Album; Elliott Smith’s “Angel In The Snow” from his posthumous collection of unreleased music; “Goin’ Home,” a solo track by Dan Auerbach, half of the Black Keys; “The Snow Before Us” by San Francisco trio Charles Atlas; plus two appearances by Graham Nash, with CSNY on “Taken At All” and solo on “Be Yourself” from 1971’s Songs For Beginners. Along with the featured songs, UP IN THE AIR also includes two tracks from Rolfe Kent’s musical score.

TWISTED SISTER HUNGRY AGAIN

Rhino Remasters 1984 Top 20 Smash Album With A Bonus Disc Of
Unreleased Studio Recordings, Plus A New Track By The Original Lineup
For 25TH Anniversary Edition

Limited Edition Pink Vinyl Package Accompanies CD and Digital Release

Available From Rhino June 30

LOS ANGELES – After rocking clubs from Los Angeles to New York City for more than a decade, Twisted Sister made its bones in 1984 with the quintet’s second Atlantic Records release, a Top 20 album that stormed the charts with a string of hit singles and genre-bending videos. Rhino proudly wears a Twisted Sister pin on its uniform, celebrating the album’s multi-platinum success with a 25th Anniversary Edition that includes a bonus disc of unreleased outtakes and early demos from the original sessions, as well as a new track recorded especially for this collection by the 1984 lineup: Dee Snider, Jay Jay French, Eddie Ojeda, Mark Mendoza, and A.J. Pero. STAY HUNGRY 25th Anniversary Edition will be available June 30 from Rhino Records at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $19.98 (CD), $12.99 (digital).

A limited edition pink vinyl package with the original “Stay Hungry” album art and bonus poster will also be released this summer at the suggested retail price of $24.98.

The first disc contains remastered versions of the nine tracks from the May 1984 original. The album was a smash thanks to a pair of fist-pumping anthems of youthful rebellion—“I Wanna Rock” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It”—that went Top 40. The band balanced those catchy songs with the harder edge of metal classics like “Burn In Hell” and “Horror-Teria,” a macabre song that would later serve as the inspiration for Strangeland, a 1998 horror film written by Snider, who also starred as the sadistic Captain Howdy.

The bonus disc uncovers 15 unreleased recordings that range from alternate versions of album tracks—including “We’re Not Gonna Take It”—to several non-album tracks such as “Death From Above,” “Prime Motivator,” and “Pay The Price,” a song from the band’s earlier club days. Along with the vintage tracks, the collection includes “30,” Twisted’s first new song in 11 years recorded by the band for the 25th Anniversary Edition.

“30” was originally written by Dee Snider with Marc Beeman and Sharon Lawson for the reality series Gone Country. Dee says, “While ‘30’ was my attempt at a country song for the show, the realization was that rock ’n’ roll is a direct outgrowth of country music. Since ‘30’ was written about my Twisted Sister experience, it seemed only natural for us to record it and rock it out.”

More than a decade after Twisted Sister’s last show, the band reformed in 2001 for a benefit and continued playing together, including an astonishing run of over 50 headline festival dates performing in front of two million people in over 23 countries. In 2006, the band returned to the charts with Twisted Christmas, a holiday album that buzzsaws through yuletide classics such as, “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silver Bells.” That same year, the Long Island Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Twisted Sister. The band is currently at work on a new album and a Broadway musical based on Twisted Christmas. Twisted Sister will headline the annual Rocklahoma music festival July 9-12 in Pryor, Oklahoma. Rock of Ages, Broadway’s latest musical hit with five Tony® nominations, features Twisted Sister prominently in its story line and with the band’s aforementioned iconic anthems, “I Wanna Rock” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”

Were you there? Be sure to check out Twisted Sister’s 1978 debut tour and more at www.twistedsister.com and myspace.com/twistedsister.
