JOY DIVISION: UNKNOWN PLEASURES: REIMAGINED

Watch "I Remember Nothing" Now

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the acclaimed Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures. The album was the "sound of the future" when it was released in 1979, and sounds as relevant, urgent and "from the future" here and now, as it did then.

One of the most pivotal albums ever recorded, Unknown Pleasures has influenced countless creative minds over the years and continues to be an instructive legacy that sees no end - a seemingly endless vision of Joy Division as truth and myth, as well as the continuing legacy being created by the band they morphed into: New Order.

Working together with the band, their visual coordinator Warren Jackson has commissioned 10 new films, one for each track on the album, which will present a filmic re-imagining of the music in 2019.

Collaborating with established artists and directors as well as up-and-coming filmmakers, the clips are created by those for whom Joy Division and the album Unknown Pleasures has provided sense, form and framing, a fractured influence on their own insights, art and process.

The series of videos, sound-tracked by the original Joy Division recordings, will be released over the course of 2019 beginning in June. The first video for "I Remember Nothing," directed by Helgi and Hörður is now available for viewing by going HERE.

DIRECTORS:

Sean Evans (USA)
Filmmaker, creative director and concert designer, Sean Evans (aka deadskinboy) previously directed the Grammy-nominated film "Roger Waters: The Wall" (2014) - a cinematic document of one of the most ambitious touring stage designs whose visuals and graphics were threaded with intimate and personal narratives, re-tuning and re-inventing the concert documentary genre. Evans has worked collaboratively with Roger Waters for over 10 years and has also worked with Thom Yorke and Tom Morello.

Feargal Ward and Adrian Duncan (Berlin)
Dividing his time between Ireland and Germany, Ward's award-winning work has been screened, exhibited and broadcast worldwide. He collaborates with other filmmakers and artists on projects of shared interests. Selected works: "The Soil Became Scandinavian" (2018 - EVA Art Biennial); "The Lonely Battle of Thomas Reid" (2017 - Munich DokFest, Moscow Film Festival, Documenta Madrid); "The Great Wall" (2015, DoP - CPH:DOX Copenhagen, MOMA New York); "Yximalloo" (2014 - FID Marseille Prix Premier prize, Montreal Festival de Nouveau Cinema, Olhar de Cinema Brazil). Adrian Duncan is an Irish writer and artist in Berlin. His acclaimed debut novel "Love Notes from a German Building Site" will be released in the UK in October 2019.

Amos Poe (NYC)
Writer, producer and described by the New York Times as a "pioneering filmmaker", Poe is regularly referred to as the father of modern American independent cinema. A prominent exponent of the No Wave cinema movement (1975-1985, which also included Jim Jarmusch, Abel Ferrara and Richard Kern) that grew out of the music and art scene of New York's East Village. No Wave was driven by a DIY ethic, combining B-movie and Avant Garde genres to create new and vibrant American art films. Selected works: "The Blank Generation" (1975 with Ivan Krall - the first punk film, featuring Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Iggy Pop and Talking Heads); "The Foreigner" (1978 - featuring Debbie Harry); "Empire II" (2012). His film "A Walk In The Park" opened the Rome Film Festival in 2012. Amos Poe is currently painting robots.

Makato Nagahisa (Tokyo)
Film director and screenwriter, Nagahisa has made films and music videos (including Chai's "N.E.O." and Clitoric Ris's "Room Not Exposed To The Sun") while working as a creative director at Dentsu in Japan. He wrote and directed the film "And So We Put Goldfish In The Bowl" (2016), and was the first Japanese director to win the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. His first feature film - "We Are Little Zombies" (2019) received Special Mention at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as winning Sundance Film Festival's World Dramatic Special Jury Award in January, 2019. His influences include Japanese actor and director Juzo Itami, Canadian jazz orchestrator Gil Evans and French polymath Boris Vian.

Todd Hido (USA)
Originally from Kent, Ohio, and now based in San Francisco Bay Area, Todd Hido is a contemporary artist and photographer renowned for his work framing suburban America. Drawing from childhood memories as a creative well, Hido wanders endlessly, taking lengthy road trips in search of imagery that connects with his own recollections. His influences include Alfred Hitchcock, Stephen Shore, Nan Goldin and Andreas Gursky. Hido has also created campaign photography for Bottega Veneta, working with Lauren Hutton and Joan Smalls. Hido's photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has been the recipient of the Eureka Fellowship, Fleishhacker Foundation, Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation Visual Arts Award and the Barclay Simpson Award. His work has been detailed in over 20 monographs and books, including 'Nymph Daughters' (Super Labo, 2010) and Bright Black World (Nazraeli Press, 2018).

Vincent Moon (Paris)
Vincent Moon (Mathieu Saura) is an independent French filmmaker and sound explorer. He has been making films for the previous ten years travelling around the world around with a camera and backpack on a quest for documenting sound - from stadium to rock to rare shamanic rituals, folklore and religion. He works alone or with people he finds along the unmapped way. His project "Hibridos"(with Priscilla Telmon) was a 3 year exploration of Brazil - a "trans-cinema" searching for sacred and new cults around the country. This has resulted in more than 100 short films, a feature length film, 75 digital albums, immersive video installations and live cinema performances. In 2019 he will begin the project "Hibiki," an exploration of rituals and spirituality in Japan with Atiqa Kawakami. Vincent Moon has previously worked with Arcade Fire, R.E.M. and The National.

Lynne Ramsay (UK)
Scottish film director, writer, producer and cinematographer, Ramsay is known for the feature films "Morvern Callar" (2002) - starring Samantha Morton who would go on to be similarly acclaimed for her performance as Debbie Curtis in the 2007 Ian Curtis bio-pic "Control" - "We Need to Talk About Kevin" (2011) starring Tilda Swinton, and "You Were Never Really Here" (2017) starring Joaquin Phoenix - a film which received a 7-minute stand ovation in Cannes following its premiere. Ramsay's films are considered low on dialogue and explicit story exposition, instead using images, music, and sound to create their worlds. In 1996, she won the Cannes Prix de Jury for her graduation film, and in 2013 she was selected as a member of main jury at the Cannes Film Festival. The Harvard Film Archive describes her work as "uncompromising, fascinated by the tremendous power of cinema to appeal directly to the senses and awaken new depths in our audio-visual imagination. Immersive and at times almost overwhelming." She has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Edinburgh for her contribution to British film.

THE 9TH ANNUAL
GRATEFUL DEAD MEET-UP AT THE MOVIES
BRINGS THE BAND'S LEGENDARY GIANTS STADIUM
CONCERT FROM JUNE 17, 1991 TO MOVIE THEATERS WORLDWIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON AUGUST

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR THE FIRST EVER WORLDWIDE MEET-UP CINEMA EVENT AT MEETUPATTHEMOVIES.COM

Denver, CO, June 13: Global entertainment distributor Trafalgar Releasing is bringing the 9th Annual Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies to select movie theaters on Thursday, August 1. This meet-up marks the first time that the acclaimed series will receive a global outing, reaching audiences worldwide. Fans of the iconic classic rock band can now find their local screening and purchase tickets at MeetUpAtTheMovies.com.

The highly anticipated annual fan event this year will showcase the previously unreleased complete June 17, 1991 concert from Giants Stadium in New Jersey, widely considered to be one of the greatest shows of the band's final decade of performing. The event's August 1 date coincides with the birthday of late Grateful Dead founding member Jerry Garcia, which is now a yearly time of celebration in the Dead Head community.

"The Summer Tour of 1991 was widely considered one of the best of the 1990s, and the June 17, 1991 show at Giants Stadium was nearly universally acclaimed as the best of the tour. I was fortunate to see quite a few shows in 1991, a terrific year for the Grateful Dead, and the one show from 1991 whose reputation grew as time went on was this concert," says the band's archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux. "Now, 28 years later, its mystique is here for everyone to see and hear in the best possible quality. Over the years, the greatest Dead shows of all time have frequently been mentioned as suggestions and requests for release, shows such as Harpur College, Veneta, Cornell, Hampton's Warlocks shows, and amongst those, near the top of the request list, is Giants Stadium 6/17/91. We're thrilled to be partnering with Trafalgar to bring it to you on August 1. It's going to be an outstanding night of music."

The June 17, 1991 concert chosen for this year's event is sure to be a crowd pleaser, as the show is one of only two recorded on 48-track analog tape, providing spectacular and unprecedented audio quality. The 1991 Giants Stadium show features fan favorites such as "Eyes Of The World,""Truckin',""Uncle John's Band," along with Grateful Dead rarities including: "Saint Of Circumstance," "Might As Well," "New Speedway Boogie," and so much more. Mixed by Jeffrey Norman in glorious surround sound with video from the multi-camera live edit, this will be the first time the Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick line-up has ever appeared on the big screen.

As a special treat, this extraordinary screening will also feature a reveal of the Grateful Dead's 2019 boxed set, personally hosted by Lemieux.

Mark Pinkus, President of Rhino Entertainment who oversees Grateful Dead Properties said: "It's been incredibly exciting to watch the Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies evolve over the last eight years, with the audiences growing larger and more eclectic with each installment. Partnering with Trafalgar Releasing will now take us to the next step in this evolution, with even more diverse cinema offerings and worldwide distribution. I fully expect the ninth annual Meet-Up being the biggest yet and look forward to attending on August 1."

Kymberli Frueh, SVP for Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing added: "Trafalgar Releasing couldn't be more excited to unite Grateful Dead fans across the globe for this exciting expansion of the annual Meet-Up leading into its ninth year. Our focus is on creating global cinema events that connect communities of fans across the world and we are excited to bring the annual Meet-Up to Dead Heads outside the US as well."

The event will be screened in theaters around the world on Thursday, August 1. Tickets are on-sale now at MeetUpAtTheMovies.com.

LOS ANGELES - Miles Davis shocked the music world in 1985 when he left Columbia Records after 30 years to join Warner Bros. Records. In October of that year, he began recording the album Rubberband in Los Angeles at Ameraycan Studios with producers Randy Hall and Zane Giles. The musical direction Davis was taking during the sessions marked a radical departure, with the inclusion of funk and soul grooves; with plans to feature guest vocalists Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan. Eventually, the album was shelved and Davis went on to record Tutu, leaving the Rubberband songs unheard and untouched for over 30 years.

Davis' fans finally got a taste of the iconic trumpeter's long-lost album last year with the release of a four-song Rubberband EP for Record Store Day, which is also available digitally. Now Rhino is excited to announce that the entire 11-song Rubberband album will make its debut on September 6 on CD, digitally, and as a 180-gram 2-LP set. It was finished by the original producers Hall and Giles; with Davis' nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., who played drums on the original sessions for the album in 1985-86. The cover art for the album is a Davis original painting from the time. The track titled "Rubberband Of Life," featuring Ledisi, is available now digitally. Click here to listen. A limited edition Rhino.com bundle of the vinyl version featuring an exclusive 7-inch single of the track "Paradise" is available for pre-order now.

"Uncle Miles would be proud. Randy, Zane and I, and everyone involved, put our heart and soul into 'The Rubberband Of Life,'" says Wilburn, Jr.

In 2017 - 32 years after Davis started recording Rubberband - Hall, Giles, and Davis' nephew, Wilburn, Jr. - began work to finish the album. The final version includes several guest artists including singers Ledisi (a 12-time Grammy nominee) and Lalah Hathaway (daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway).

Davis - who plays both trumpet and keyboards on the album - was joined in the studio by keyboardists Adam Holzman, Neil Larsen and Wayne Linsey; percussionist Steve Reid; saxophonist Glen Burris; and Wilburn, Jr. on drums. The sessions were engineered by Grammy®-winner Reggie Dozier, whose brother Lamont Dozier was part of the legendary Motown songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Available From Rhino On August 2

LOS ANGELES - Bad Company's real-life "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" began 45 years ago when the British quartet topped the album charts in America with their self-titled debut, setting the group on a trajectory to become one of the most-popular bands of the classic-rock era.

Rhino celebrates Bad Company's multi-platinum musical legacy with a new clamshell boxed set that includes every studio album the group released on the Swan Song record label between 1974 and 1982. THE SWAN SONG YEARS 1974-1982 will be available on August 2 for $39.98.

Each album has been remastered from the original analogue multi-track tapes, including newly remastered versions of Desolation Angels and Rough Diamonds that are making their debut as part of this set. The other albums included in the collection are: Bad Company (1974), Straight Shooter (1975), Run with the Pack (1976), and Burnin' Sky (1977).

In 1973, members of three popular bands came together to form Bad Company: singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke of Free; Mick Ralphs of Mott the Hoople and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell. That same year, Bad Company was the first band signed to Led Zeppelin's new record label, Swan Song.

The band's 1974 debut Bad Company went to #1 in America and was certified 5x platinum on the strength of future-radio staples like "Can't Get Enough," "Rock Steady," and "Movin' On." The multi-platinum streak continued a year later with Straight Shooter. Certified 3x platinum the album delivered standouts like "Good Lovin' Gone Bad," "Shooting Star" and the Grammy-nominated smash, "Feel Like Makin' Love."

The band notched another platinum record in 1976 with Run with the Pack, which includes "Silver, Blue & Gold," a song that has become a fan-favorite even though its never been released as a single. Burnin' Sky went gold in 1977 and was followed two years later by the double-platinum Desolation Angels. The end of an era came in 1982 with the release of Rough Diamonds. Certified gold, it was the last album the band recorded for Swan Song and the final studio album the original quartet ever released.

Bad Company will hit the road this summer on tour throughout North America. For tour information and dates, please go here: www.badcompany.com/tour

JACKSON BROWNE OVERSEES NEW REMASTERING
OF HIS CLASSIC ALBUM RUNNING ON EMPTY

Available On CD, 180-Gram LP, And Digitally On July 12 From Asylum/Rhino

LOS ANGELES - Jackson Browne went on tour in 1977 with a remarkable group of musicians to create an album about the road, on the road. The result was Running On Empty, a musical portrait of life on tour that is as brutally honest as it is achingly beautiful. Paul Nelson wrote in his original Rolling Stone review of the album that "Browne has consciously created a documentary, as brightly prosaic as it is darkly poetic, with a keen eye for the mundane as well as the magical."

A new version of Running On Empty with newly remastered sound and a faithful reproduction of the original artwork will be available July 12 on CD ($14.98), 180-gram vinyl ($24.98), and through digital download and streaming services. The album was mastered by Gavin Lurssen of Lurssen Mastering. The vinyl was mastered by Ron McMaster, and manufactured on 180-gram vinyl by the Pallas Group.

The album features 10 live performances recorded in 1977 between August 17 and September 18 by Browne and his band: guitarist Danny Kortchmar; David Lindley on fiddle and lap steel guitar; keyboardist Craig Doerge; bassist Leland Sklar; drummer Russ Kunkel; and background vocalists Doug Haywood and Rosemary Butler. Together, they took an unconventional and, at the time, profoundly innovative approach to recording these songs,  opting for natural settings while on the road, such as a Holiday Inn hotel room, a backstage rehearsal space, on a tour bus, and on stage.

Cameron Crowe has previously noted on the album: "More than a live recording, Running On Empty was closer to a life recording," adding that Browne was backed by his "mightiest band yet."

The New York Times foresaw the album's future influence in their 1978 review, predicting that "this album and its success may prove to be a powerful leavening influence, on both Mr. Browne and other singer‐songwriters whose ambitions are even remotely like his own."

Running On Empty is Browne's biggest-selling album, peaking at #3 on the Billboard albums chart, and has been certified 7x Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over seven million copies.
