TAKING WOODSTOCK

Soundtrack To Ang Lee’s New Comedy About
The Road To The 1969 Event Includes Unforgettable Songs By
The Artists Who Played Woodstock, And Much More

Three Versions Available From Rhino August 25

LOS ANGELES — Taking Woodstock is the new movie comedy directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) inspired by the memoirs of Elliot Tiber, who with his family inadvertently played a role in making the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the famed happening it was, 40 years ago this summer. The TAKING WOODSTOCK soundtrack, with songs from many of the artists who performed at the festival, reflects a joyous moment in time when everything seemed possible.

Three different versions will be available from Rhino August 25 at www.rhino.com and at all retail outlets. The CD version features the soundtrack with selections of Oscar® nominee Danny Elfman’s (Milk) score for a suggested list price of $18.98. Available digitally are the standard soundtrack ($11.99), the score-only version ($11.99), and an iTunes exclusive deluxe version, which includes the soundtrack, plus the complete score, for a suggested list price of $19.99

The TAKING WOODSTOCK soundtrack begins with Richie Havens, who opened the festival on August 15, 1969. For the movie Havens recorded a new version of “Freedom,” the song he played to close his set at Woodstock. The soundtrack contains songs from a number of 1960s musical icons who performed at the festival, including Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and Crosby, Stills & Nash–who played only their second show in front of the crowd, which was estimated at 500,000 strong.

Another memorable Woodstock moment echoed on the soundtrack is a live version of “I-Feel-Like I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag,” the anti-war song Country Joe McDonald performed after leading the crowd in the infamous “Fish” cheer. The soundtrack also features live performances by other Woodstock alumni, including Arlo Guthrie (“Coming Into Los Angeles”), Canned Heat (“Going Up The Country”), Melanie (“Beautiful People”), and The Band (“I Shall Be Released”), whose members lived not far from the concert site.

Artists who were scheduled to perform at the festival but had to drop out are included on the TAKING WOODSTOCK soundtrack as well; Love (“The Red Telephone”) and The Doors (“Maggie M’Gill”).

Focus Features will release the movie Taking Woodstock nationwide August 28. The film stars Demetri Martin, Dan Fogler, Henry Goodman, Jonathan Groff, Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Imelda Staunton, with Emile Hirsch and Liev Schreiber. For more information about the film, visit www.takingwoodstockthemovie.com.

SINATRA MASTERS THE ART OF SEDUCTION

Reprise Presents Standard and Deluxe Editions
of Seduction: Sinatra Sings Of Love, Both Sets Include An
Alternate Version of “My Funny Valentine”

Available January 20 from Reprise Records

LOS ANGELES — Legendary for his ability to buckle knees and melt hearts en masse with his unmistakable voice, Frank Sinatra was a master at the art of seduction. As author Bill Zehme observes in the liner notes, “He was, of course, nothing less than the human embodiment of a curled beckoning finger that signaled only, inarguably: ‘Come here, baby...’”

On January 20, 2009, Reprise unleashes Sinatra’s unstoppable force of vocal persuasion with SEDUCTION: SINATRA SINGS OF LOVE. Available in a standard 22-track edition and a two-CD deluxe edition with 10 bonus tracks, the collections will be available at all retail outlets, including www.sinatra.com, for a suggested list price of $18.98 (standard) and $24.98 (deluxe) for CD editions; or $12.99 (standard) and $16.99 (deluxe) for digital versions.

SEDUCTION features an alternate version of the Rodgers and Hart standard “My Funny Valentine,” as well as newly remastered tracks taken from throughout Sinatra’s prodigious career. The collection opens with “Prisoner Of Love” and closes with “That’s All”—songs from Sinatra & Strings (1962), an album of romantic ballads featuring lush arrangements by Don Costa. “Misty,” another song from the same album, is one of the deluxe edition’s bonus tracks.

While Costa’s romantic orchestrations serve as the bookends for SEDUCTION, much of the collection spotlights Sinatra’s recordings with arranger Nelson Riddle, with whom the singer recorded a number of his most beloved albums. This collection includes nine unforgettable Nelson Riddle collaborations such as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Witchcraft,” and “It Had To Be You.” The bonus tracks offer three more Riddle arrangements: “I Like To Lead When I Dance” from Robin And The Seven Hoods (1964), “The Look Of Love,” and “Secret Love.”

SEDUCTION contains several notable collaborations, including Sinatra with Count Basie and His Orchestra performing Quincy Jones’ arrangement for “More,” the theme from the 1962 Italian movie Mondo Cane. The song first appeared on the 1964 album It Might As Well Be Swing. “I Wish You Love” from the same album is included as a bonus track on the deluxe version of SEDUCTION. Influential Brazilian guitarist and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim appears on two tracks: “I Concentrate On You” and “This Happy Madness (Estrada Branca).” The first is from 1967’s Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the other from 1971’s Sinatra & Company.

Five-Disc Boxed Set Features All Previously Unreleased
Live Performances Of Ol’ Blue Eyes In “The Apple”

Collection Highlights Performances Recorded Between
1955 and 1990 At Iconic New York City Venues

Available From Reprise November 3

LOS ANGELES — Frank Sinatra may have been born in Hoboken, New Jersey, but the Chairman of the Board always held a special place in his heart for the city that never sleeps—“The Apple,”as he called it. From a surprise appearance with Tommy Dorsey in 1955 to a 1990 concert at Radio City Music Hall, SINATRA: NEW YORK follows the singer onstage at various iconic New York City venues, living out one of his most famous lines: “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.” The five-disc boxed set (4-CD/1-DVD) of previously unreleased live performances will be available November 3, at all retail outlets, including www.Sinatra.com, for a suggested list price of $79.99 (physical) and $34.99 (digital).

The 71 previously unreleased performances gathered here (55 on CD/16 on DVD) capture the singer giving his electricifying best, reminding listeners why Sinatra’s celebrated baritone has been hailed as the “The Voice.” The set, produced by Charles Pignone, features deluxe packaging with rare, never-before-seen photos, tributes from Martin Scorsese, Tony Bennett, Yogi Berra, and Twyla Tharp, liner notes by Nat Hentoff, and essays by William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist and French Connection; George Kalinsky, official photographer for Madison Square Garden for over 40 years; Tom Young, engineer for Sinatra; Joe & Sal Scognamillo, owners of Patsy’s Italian Restaurant in New York City; and Frank Sinatra Jr.

SINATRA: NEW YORK begins in February 1955, at the Manhattan Center, where Sinatra made a surprise appearance with Tommy Dorsey and his band during a concert celebrating the group’s 20-year anniversary. Sinatra, who first became a star singing with Dorsey in the early ’40s, sang a trio of his biggest hits with Dorsey: “Oh! Look At Me Now,” “This Love Of Mine;” and “I’ll Never Smile Again,” a song that spent 12 weeks at #1 in 1940. The remainder of the first disc was recorded in September 1963, at the United Nations. To celebrate U.N. Staff Day, Sinatra sang at the organization’s Manhattan offices, accompanied only by pianist Skitch Henderson, who incidentally played on Sinatra’s first solo recording session in 1942. During the show, the duo performed “I Have Dreamed” and “My Heart Stood Still” from The Concert Sinatra, an album released earlier that year.

Sinatra “retired” in 1971, at the age of 55, but returned in 1973, with Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back. A year later, he launched a tour to benefit an international children’s charity that included a show at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The second disc features classics such as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “Come Fly With Me.” Sinatra also performed Joe Raposo’s “There Used To Be A Ballpark” and “You Will Be My Music” from Ol’ Blue Eyes.

From October 1974, the third disc contains the first night of Sinatra’s two-night stand at Madison Square Garden. The second night was televised and dubbed ‘The Main Event’ concert. With the famous arena set up for a boxing match—complete with ringside seats—Howard Cosell introduced Sinatra before the singer took the stage wearing boxing gloves. Bill Miller conducted Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herd as the band accompanied Sinatra on signature hits (“The Lady Is A Tramp,” “My Way”), ballads (“Let Me Try Again,” “Angel Eyes”), and “Autumn In New York.”

The final CD returns to Carnegie Hall for a sold-out June 1984 show, and Sinatra taps his extensive songbook for an eclectic evening of music that spans four decades: “Fly Me To The Moon”; “Pennies From Heaven”; “My Way”; and “Come Rain Or Come Shine.” The second half of disc four, from Radio City Music Hall in June 1990, finds Sinatra performing with an orchestra conducted by his son Frank Sinatra Jr., and includes such hits as “Strangers In The Night,” “Mack The Knife,” and “Theme From New York, New York.”

SINATRA: NEW YORK closes with a DVD containing the singer’s June 25, 1980, concert at Carnegie Hall. At the time, the two-week engagement set a record for the venue by selling out in just a day. The shows followed the release of 1980’s Trilogy, Sinatra’s ambitious triple-album that featured “The Theme From New York, New York.” Sinatra mixes “Summer Me, Winter Me” from that album with his hits “I’ve Got The World On A String” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” Foreshadowing the follow-up to Trilogy is “The Gal That Got Away”/“It Never Entered My Mind,” a medley that would appear on She Shot Me Down in 1981.

ROD STEWART, UNPLUGGED…AND UNFORGETTABLE

Warner Bros. Spotlights Stewart’s Intimate 1993 Acoustic Performance With Remastered Collector’s Edition, Including Two Bonus Songs, Plus the Original Broadcast on DVD for the First Time Ever

Available March 10 From Rhino Records

LOS ANGELES — More than 20 years after Rod Stewart achieved superstardom, the shag-topped rocker took to the stage at Universal Studios in Los Angeles for a performance filmed for MTV’s Unplugged series. The stellar concert featured a reunion with guitarist Ron Wood—with whom Stewart played in the Jeff Beck Group and the Faces—and resulted in a hit album that peaked at #2 on the Billboard album charts and contained a Top 10 cover of Van Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately.”

Warner Bros. captures the excitement and emotion of Stewart’s ebullient performance with a Collector’s Edition that contains a remastered and expanded version of the original album. Also included is the DVD debut of the performance, which aired on MTV but has never been released in any format. The CD features two songs that did not appear on the original album. UNPLUGGED. . .AND SEATED will be available March 10 from all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for suggested list prices of $24.98 (CD/DVD) and $11.99 (digital/audio only).

Recorded February 1993, UNPLUGGED. . .AND SEATED encompasses many of Stewart’s most beloved songs, such as “Maggie May,” “Every Picture Tells A Story,” “Tonight’s The Night,” and “Hot Legs.” The Collector’s Edition includes two tracks on the CD not included on the original: “Gasoline Alley,” the B-side of the single “Have I Told You Lately”; and the previously unissued “Forever Young.”

For the performance, Stewart took his position on a stool in the middle of a small army of musicians—nine core players, three male backing vocalists, and a full string section. The intimate setting put the focus on Stewart and his ability to fully inhabit a song, while also illuminating the songs that had come to define him; those he’d written himself (“Mandolin Wind”), and those he’d made his own (“Have I Told You Lately” written by Van Morrison).

This was a special occasion in another way, marking the reunion of Stewart and his longtime friend Ron Wood. Since the breakup of the Faces in 1975, the former partners had seldom performed together, with Wood joining the Rolling Stones fulltime. Near the end of the show, the duo lead a spirited version of the Faces’ classic rave-up, “Stay With Me,” that
peaks with Stewart jumping off his seat. The show closes with a triumphant cover of “Having A Party,” originally recorded by Sam Cooke, one of Stewart’s idols.

ROD REWRITES HISTORY WITH SESSIONS

Warner Bros. Reveals Legendary Performer’s Studio Past
With Four-Disc Boxed Set Of Unreleased Sessions Spanning 1971-1998

Available September 29

LOS ANGELES — Warner Bros. began reissuing Rod Stewart’s Warner Bros. catalog a year ago with remastered and expanded versions of some of the artist’s best studio work. With its latest effort, Warner Bros. goes deep into the vaults to reveal the secret studio history of this very public performer with a boxed set of unreleased recordings chosen from sessions spanning 1971-1998. THE ROD STEWART SESSIONS 1971-1998 will be available September 29 at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $64.98 (physical) and $29.99 (digital).

Producers Andy Zax and Cheryl Pawelski prowled through a warehouse of Stewart’s tapes to unearth all the dusty gems four discs could hold. Spanning more than 25 years, the collection’s 63 songs, outtakes, and ephemera provide extraordinary insight into the studio work of one of rock’s legendary figures and paint a picture of what might have been. Many of these performances are more stripped-down and intimate than their released counterparts, so the set becomes an illustration and a showcase of Rod’s creative process. Few major artists have allowed such a revealing look behind the scenes.

More than a third of THE ROD STEWART SESSIONS 1971-1998 chronicles the torrent of indelible recordings Stewart unleashed during the ’70s. Fittingly, the set opens with a decidedly rough take of “Maggie May,” the #1 hit from Stewart’s third solo album–Every Picture Tells A Story–that broke him as a solo artist in 1971. SESSIONS offers alternate versions of well-known hits from that era such as “Sailing,” “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright),” “You Wear It Well,” and an acoustic version of “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim).” Alongside those are rarities like the unfinished “Think I’ll Pack My Bags” (which later appeared on Ron Wood’s solo debut rewritten as “Mystifies Me”), an early version of “So Tired” that finds the band working out the arrangement in the studio, and an acoustic version of the B-side “Rosie.” Of special note is the rumored-to-exist but never heard—until now—sequel to “The Killing of Georgie”; “Innocent (The Killing of Georgie Part III)” completes the epic narrative begun on 1976's A Night On The Town album with a ferociously rocking performance taken from the sessions for the following year's Foot Loose & Fancy Free. Stewart ended the decade with a hits package that was to include his cover of British pub-rocker Frankie Miller’s “When I’m Away From You” that has remained unreleased until now.

SESSIONS touches on six albums Stewart released during the ’80s, including Foolish Behaviour (1980), which was originally intended to be a double album, but was eventually scaled back to a single disc. Along with an early version of the album track “Oh God, I Wish I Was Home Tonight” the collection also features four unreleased tracks presumably destined for the second disc: “Time Of My Life,” “TV Mama,” “Stupid,” and Buddy Holly’s “Maybe Baby.” While the multitracks for Tonight I’m Yours (1981) have gone missing, the producers managed to recover an unreleased song called “Thunderbird” from the session’s only surviving mixdown tape. The collection closes out the decade with several tracks from Out Of Order (1988), including a tender reading of “Forever Young” that features Stewart accompanied only by a piano and the improvised in the studio and then abandoned “I Go To Jail For You.”

The final SESSIONS disc is dedicated to Stewart’s resurgence as an artistic and commercial force in the ’90s. It begins with six songs recorded in the summer of 1992 that were shelved in favor of
Unplugged…And Seated, including a cover of Bob Dylan and The Band’s “This Wheel’s On Fire,” and an all-star remake of the 1969 Python Lee Jackson song (originally also sung by Rod) “In A Broken Dream,” which features Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. Also included is Stewart’s cover of Bobby Womack’s “Looking For A Love,” which was surprisingly left off A Spanner In The Works (1995) and a version of Oasis’ “Rockin’ Chair” that he recorded for When We Were The New Boys (1998).

Although never intended to be shared with the world, the directness and immediacy of the music on THE ROD STEWART SESSIONS 1971-1998 documents an exceptional artist at work over a long period of time, says Zax, the set’s coproducer. “Admirers of particular eras of Rod’s career may be surprised to discover, upon listening to this box, that there is far less difference between the Rod of 1971 and the Rod of 1998–and all the years between them–than they had previously believed.”
