LOS ANGELES – February 25 marked the 20-year anniversary for Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power, a landmark album widely acknowledged as one of metal’s most enduring and influential masterworks. Recorded by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul, the album has been certified double platinum by the RIAA and features several of the group’s most iconic songs including “Walk,” “Mouth For War,” “This Love,” and “Fucking Hostile.”

To celebrate, Rhino channels the album’s relentless blitzkrieg of musical aggression onto a two-disc Deluxe Edition. The CD includes the original album remastered and “Piss,” a recently discovered unreleased track from the recording sessions. The DVD contains an unreleased live performance filmed in Italy in September of 1992 plus the three official music videos from the album.

Due out May 15 from Rhino, the CD/DVD set will be available at retail outlets, including www.pantera.com and www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $19.98. A version of the release will also be available digitally.

The collection features the debut of “Piss,” an incendiary blast of vintage Pantera from the original recording sessions. It remained lost until Vinnie Paul rediscovered the track while going through the band’s vault.

Along with the unreleased song, VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER (DELUXE EDITION) also features unreleased video of the quartet performing six songs at the Monsters Of Rock show in Reggio Emilia, Italy on September 12, 1992. The set list draws almost exclusively from Vulgar (“This Love,” “Rise” “Mouth For War”), but also includes the title track from their previous album, Cowboys From Hell, and a melding of Vulgar’s “Hollow” and Cowboys’ “Domination,” which was a live staple of the band. Video of Pantera performing live during this era is extremely rare, making the DVD one of the few ways to see them in their prime.

LOS ANGELES – Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the wildly popular symphonic rock juggernaut, is expanding its third album, Beethoven’s Last Night, as a two-disc deluxe edition. Originally released in 2000, the album was the group’s third rock opera, and its first non-holiday themed album. BEETHOVEN’S LAST NIGHT: THE COMPLETE NARRATED VERSION includes all of the music from the original release and, for the first time, the narration featured during live performances of the album. It comes packaged with a booklet filled with illustrations of the story, plus the full lyrics and narration.

BEETHOVEN’S LAST NIGHT: THE COMPLETE NARRATED VERSION will debut March 13 as a two-CD set and will be available for $19.98 exclusively at Wal-Mart stores and TSO concerts. The album will be released digitally on April 17 at all digital retail outlets for $12.99.

The group will perform Beethoven’s Last Night during Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s upcoming Spring Tour, which runs March 3 to May 13 and includes stops in 60 markets. Among the most popular live acts of the past decade, the group is known for its signature brand of “Rock Theater,” an unforgettable concert experience that combines virtuoso musicianship and evocative storytelling with over-the-top production.

Certified gold by the RIAA, Beethoven’s Last Night is a rock opera that recounts the fictional tale of how, on the last night of his life, Ludwig van Beethoven (aided by Fate and her son Twist) unwittingly tricked Mephistopheles and was allowed to keep his soul. During live performances of the album, Trans-Siberian Orchestra added sections of narration between each song to better tell the story. BEETHOVEN’S LAST NIGHT: THE COMPLETE NARRATED VERSION includes this previously unavailable narration, performed by Bryan Hicks, whose brilliant story-telling has been captured for the first time on disc.

Creator Paul O’Neill explains, “This is how I have always envisioned the story being experienced. Where the listener can relax, close their eyes and within minutes be wandering the streets of 1800’s Vienna with Beethoven on the last great adventure of his life.”

The Vow - Music From The Motion Picture

Release Date

LOS ANGELES – Rhino will release THE VOW: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE in the days leading up to the film’s national opening on February 10. The soundtrack will be available February 7 for download at all digital retailers for $9.99, and on CD at Amazon.com and select indie retail stores for a suggested list price of $13.98.

Presented by Screen Gems and Spyglass Entertainment, The Vow is directed by Michael Sucsy, who won the 2009 Emmy for Outstanding Made for Television Movie for Grey Gardens, which also earned him Emmy nominations for writing and directing. The story is by Stuart Sender and the screenplay is by Abby Kohn & Marc Silverstein and Jason Katims.

The Vow follows the emotional story of Paige and Leo (Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum), a happy newlywed couple whose lives are changed by a car accident that puts Paige in a coma. Waking up with severe memory loss, Paige has no memory of Leo, a confusing relationship with her parents (Sam Neill and Jessica Lange), and an ex-fiancé (Scott Speedman) she may still have feelings for. Despite these complications, Leo endeavors to win her heart again and rebuild their marriage.

THE VOW: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE captures the couple’s poignant journey with songs from such artists as OK Go (“This Too Shall Pass”), Lykke Li (“Get Some”), Matt Pond PA (“Specks”) and The Cure, whose “Pictures of You” is heard playing during the film’s final scene. The digital version of the soundtrack contains The National’s “England” as an exclusive bonus track.

The physical and digital versions share 11 tracks, with the single version of Meat Loaf’s “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” leading off the album. Many of the songs come from indie artists such as the Canadian quintet Still Life Still (“Neon Blue”), Chicago’s Light FM (“Problems Of Our Own”) and L.A. rockers Voxhaul Broadcast (“Leaving On the 5th”). The album also includes “Nothing Was Stolen (Love Me Foolishly)” by Phosphorescent; “Play My Way” by Maya Von Doll; and a remix of Scott Hardkiss’ “Come On, Come On” that features singer Britta Phillips of Dean and Britta.

A note from director Michael Sucsy:

With each new project, the first thing I do is start a music dialogue. That playlist then becomes a point of inspiration that anchors my process, helping to create an overall tone for the film I am making. For this film, I didn’t want to select songs that were too nostalgic or obscure, nor did I want them to be overly “poppy” because that can make a film feel too specifically associated with one time and place. Certain songs from the initial playlist always jump out at me. In this case, “Come On, Come On” (by Scott Hardkiss/Dean & Britta Remix) struck a chord. Its pulsing bass woke my heart and its melody, coupled with Britta Phillips’ vocals, set the bittersweet tone, which encompassed the film I knew I was making. Once that track was set, it gave me the language, the parameters, an umbrella to work under. As the other tracks started to fall into place, I needed a strong song for the ending, and I didn’t want to utilize score. When I first watched The Cure’s “Pictures of You” up against the final scene in the film, I got deeply emotional. The song has always been one of my favorites, and while it’s typically about loss and regret, in the context of this moment between Leo (Tatum) and Paige (McAdams), it takes on a whole new meaning – one of letting go. The song almost feels custom written for The Vow when you consider the lyrics and so many of the scenes from the movie. And if there was ever any doubt as to whether this song fits in the musical lexicon of the film, it turns out that Scott Hardkiss used it as his inspiration for “Come On, Come On.” I love when things come full circle.

SUNNY GOODGE STREET: THE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS

Artist Name
Tom Northcott
Release Date

LOS ANGELES – Just who is Tom Northcott? Rhino Handmade unravels the mystery with an exquisitely packaged collection that sheds light on this unheralded singer-songwriter, whose distinctive voice and wonderful artistry remain among the best-kept secrets of the 1960s.

Between 1966-69, Northcott recorded a catalog of ornate psychedelic-folk for Warner Bros. Records with producers Lenny Waronker and Leon Russell. Among those were two almost-hit singles, including his versions of Donovan’s “Sunny Goodge Street” and Harry Nilsson’s “1941.” In 1970, Warner Bros. collected 10 of those recordings on The Best of Tom Northcott, an album released exclusively in the singer’s native Canada that has remained a stateside rarity until now.

Rhino Handmade fills in the details of Northcott’s musical journey with a 20-song collection that includes all of Northcott’s Warner releases, plus several previously unreleased tracks. SUNNY GOODGE STREET: THE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS is available now for pre-order, exclusively at www.rhino.com for $24.98, and will be released on February 21. There are four versions of the cover art, each with a different color variation, which will be shipped at random.

The music comes in a beautifully detailed, oversized (10” x 10”) letterpress-printed folio created by Bruce Licher of Licher Art and Design, whose previous album cover designs have garnered two Grammy® nominations. Along with a reproduction press photo, the folio also contains an “underground newspaper” that serves as the album’s liner notes. Written by producer Andrew Sandoval, they recount Northcott’s years with Warner Bros. and provide a helpful track-by-track introduction to the artist’s music.

Northcott came up through the Vancouver music scene in the early ’60s along with legendary psychedelic concert poster artist Bob Masse. His artwork is featured on the cover of SUNNY GOODGE STREET, which also contains a reproduction poster that Masse made in 1966 to promote the Tom Northcott Trio’s show at the Vancouver club Afterthought.

SUNNY GOODGE STREET: THE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS includes the 10 tracks originally issued in 1970 on The Best of Tom Northcott, including the four singles: “Sunny Goodge Street,” “1941,” “Girl Of The North Country” and “The Rainmaker.” The latter, a song written by Harry Nilsson and Bill Martin, paired Northcott with Jack Nitzsche’s outstanding arrangement.

The compilation boasts six previously unreleased tracks that Northcott recorded between 1968-69. Several are from sessions in Los Angeles, (“Ain’t Nobody Home,” “A Soulful Shade Of Blue,” “A Long Way Down” and Randy Newman’s “Somebody Always Gets Hurt”) while others were recorded in London at Pye Studios (“See The Tinker Ride” and “There’s No Time”).

The album also features the single versions of “Sunny Goodge Street” and its b-side “Who Planted Thorns In Miss Alice’s Garden,” plus Northcott’s final single with Warner Bros. Records, “Make Me An Island.”
