The Legendary “Rock Band With Horns” Gets Into The Spirit Of The Holiday Season With An Album That Mixes Original Christmas Songs And Yuletide Favorites

LOS ANGELES – Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Chicago, will celebrate the holidays this year with a new Christmas album that spotlights the legendary group’s trademark sound on eight original songs, two yuletide favorites and one timeless classic that embraces the spirit of hope.

On October 11, CHICAGO CHRISTMAS will be available on CD for $15.98 and through digital and streaming services. In addition, a black vinyl version of the album will be released to general retail, with limited-edition red and white vinyl versions exclusively available at Rhino.com. All vinyl versions will be available on November 22 for $21.98.

Produced by founding member Lee Loughnane, CHICAGO CHRISTMAS is the 37th album of the band’s career and its fourth holiday collection. Whereas its previous releases focused more on traditional Christmas songs, the new record spotlights holiday music the band wrote especially for the album, including “All Over The World,” “(Because) It’s Christmastime,” and “I’m Your Santa Claus.” The album also features R&B and ballad versions of “Merry Christmas, I Love You,” a song that Loughnane wrote with John Durrill of The Ventures, the best-selling instrumental band of all time.

Touring for their 52nd consecutive year, the band has been invigorated by the musicianship and collaborative energy of this current lineup. Manager Peter Schivarelli suggested the idea of recording a few new Christmas songs and the band jumped at the chance to record together. Their combined creative process led to a full album of new Chicago music, unified with a holiday theme.

Instead of recording the album in a studio, the group used an innovative mobile recording setup to make the album while on tour. They rehearsed the new songs during soundchecks and on days off, then recorded the tracks after the shows in various hotel rooms and the tour bus along the way. Chicago Christmas features original compositions by many of the band members, along with unmistakable horn arrangements by founding member James Pankow. The album was recorded and mixed by Tim Jessup.

Along with the new songs, the album also features the band’s interpretations of two holiday standards: “Here We Come A Caroling” and “Sleigh Ride.” It’s the second time Chicago has recorded “Sleigh Ride.” A different version appears on Chicago XXXIII: O Christmas Thee (2011). The album’s other non-original track is a soulful Chicago interpretation of the Hal David and Burt Bacharach classic, “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” which founding member Robert Lamm thought had a timely message for the holidays.

Chicago features Robert Lamm (keyboards, guitar, vocals), Lee Loughnane (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals), James Pankow (trombone, percussion), Keith Howland (guitar, vocals), Lou Pardini (keyboards, vocals), Ray Herrmann (saxophones, flute), Walfredo Reyes Jr. (drums), Neil Donell (vocals, acoustic guitar), Brett Simons (bass, vocals), and Ramon Yslas (percussion).

Chicago’s lifetime achievements include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, two Grammy Awards®, and two American Music Awards. They are Founding Artists of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Chicago's debut album, Chicago Transit Authority was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame, and Robert Lamm and James Pankow are inductees of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Record sales top the 100,000,000 mark, and include 21 Top 10 singles, five consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and five Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 36 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has a total of 47 gold and platinum awards.

LOS ANGELES – Rising up out of East L.A. comes the first ever holiday album from Los Lobos. The Grammy®-winning group researched nearly 150 Christmas-related songs from across North, Central and South America for the collections, eventually narrowing the list down to the songs they wanted to reinvent in their own inimitable style. They even wrote their own holiday original “Christmas And You,” especially for the album, which is available now on all digital download and streaming services.

LLEGÓ NAVIDAD is now available to pre-order and will be released on CD and digitally from Rhino on October 4 for $16.98. A vinyl version will be released on November 22 for $21.98.

David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, and Steve Berlin open the album with “La Rama” (the branch). This lively song is in the regional folk style known as son jarocho, which is popular in the Veracruz region of Mexico. La Rama is also the name of the traditional Mexican holiday custom where the community adorns branches from a tree and displays it in a nightly procession through the neighborhood.

Another album highlight “La Murga de Panamá” was originally recorded in 1971 by the legendary salsa duo of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe. And though “La Murga” is actually the name for a group that assembles to dance, sing, and play music during another South American holiday - Carnival – the spirit of the song is no less infectious at Christmastime.

Los Lobos transform the 1958 novelty song “Dónde Está Santa Claus” (Where is Santa Claus) into a “lowrider oldie” with a head-nodding groove powered by Hidalgo’s guitar and Berlin’s vibraphone. Rosas delivers an impeccable lead vocal on “Regalo de Reyes” (meaning Gift of Kings), a song made famous by Javier Solís, Mexican actor and singer of boleros and rancheras. Naturally, the collection also includes the band’s take on Jose Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad.”

The album’s new original “Christmas And You,” was written by Hidalgo and Pérez. Hidalgo’s vocals are sweet and soulful. Berlin layers in piano along with some Omnichord, Rosas provides electric guitar, and Lozano adds upright bass to create what is sure to become a modern classic.

a-ha took a seven-year break after the 1993 release of their fifth album, Memorial Beach. Each of the members, Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Pål Waaktaar-Savoy pursued their own interests and arts until they were invited to perform on the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo. a-ha performed two songs and were suddenly back and in perfect time for the millennium when they released their spectacular international hit album Minor Earth | Major Sky in 2000. They then hit the ground running with a well-received world tour before taking flight once again with 2002’s Lifelines. a-ha had finally returned on the scene!

Rhino celebrates one of the worlds most successful and enthusiastically loved bands by re-releasing these two millennium comeback albums in newly remastered versions with bonus tracks, unreleased demos, outtakes and some live-takes. Both sets feature brand-new liner notes by Kieron Tyler.

MINOR EARTH | MAJOR SKY (DELUXE EDITION) presents the remastered original album with bonus tracks and a second CD with 16 more demos, outtakes and live tracks. LIFELINES (DELUXE EDITION) contains the remastered original album with bonus tracks and a second 19-track CD of early versions, demos and songs that did not make it to the final album. Both sets will be released on October 18 for a suggested retail price of $24.98.

The original albums will also be reissued in remastered versions as 2-LP vinyl sets ($31.98). Two unreleased demos are available now digitally: an early version of “The Sun Never Shone That Day” (from MINOR EARTH | MAJOR SKY DELUXE EDITION) and a raw demo of “Forever Not Yours” (from LIFELINES DELUXE EDITION).

After their spectacular performance at the Oslo Nobel Peace Prize concert, Magne and Pål began recording demos in early 1999 in New York for what might become a new album. “They weren’t super planned,” says Pål of the sessions. “It came about because we wan­ted to do it. When we connect, we make a-ha music, no matter the circumstances.” In fact, a-ha were picking up where they had left off. The album was recorded in New York’s Alabaster Room, as well as in Lydlab and Rainbow studios in Oslo, and in Boogiepark in Hamburg, Germany. Minor Earth | Major Sky was produced by German producers Boogieman and Roland Spremberg, and co-produced by a-ha and Kjetil Bjerkestrand with a defining finish by British engineer/producer Niven Garland.

On its release, Minor Earth | Major Sky was an instant number one, gaining platinum success in Norway and in Germany. Gold discs came in Austria, Spain and Switzerland. The tracks “Minor Earth | Major Sky” and “Velvet” followed “Summer Moved On” as singles, the latter hitting No. 1 in Norway and top-10 in Germany.

The deluxe version of Minor Earth | Major Sky is more than just another reissue of a hit album, with demos, early versions and alternate mixes. Disc two amounts to an entirely new take on the album. Early versions of the title track “Minor Earth | Major Sky,” “Velvet,” “Summer Moved On” and the enormous powerful version of “The Sun Never Shone That Day” as well as other takes that did not make it on the final cut, reveal the sparkles of songwriting and the process of an idea becoming a hit. Four live-performances in Oslo taken from their 2001 tour prove the grandeur of an a-ha live performance.

a-ha kept their promises with Lifelines, their 2002 follow up album, proving they were back and brilliant as ever, if not even better. Time had moved on, things had grown: Magne Furuholmen was working with visual arts as well as music, Pål Waaktaar-Savoy’s Band Savoy had released their fourth album Reasons to Stay Indoors (2001), and Morten Harket had developed a successful solo career and had become a songwriter on his own.

"Morten had made a move to suggest we should write together,” reveals Magne. “That was the beginning of a new kind of partnership.” For Lifelines each band member contributed his personal compositions to the album, which finally was produced by six different producers including Stephen Hague, Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley and Martin Landquist. Anneli Drecker gave her beautiful voice to some of the songs. As their most varied, versatile and multicolored album, Lifelines gained international critical respect and went Number 1 in Germany.

As the second disc of this Deluxe Edition reissue shows, a-ha had more songs than could fit on the album: “The Breakers,” “Sole Survivor” and “To Show It Is To Blow It” did not make it to the finished album. “The Breakers” was later re-recorded by Pål’s band Savoy. They also put some effort and variety in their approach to studio work. There were recording and mixing sessions in London, New York and Oslo. Some of them are represented as demos or early mixes and enable the fan to track the growing of an idea into a hit, for example on “Lifelines,” “Dragonfly” and others. In listening to the early and still very raw “Forever Not Yours” demo version, you can see clearly how fertile the new Magne-Morten partnership was in building a hit-track.

This fall, a-ha will take their fans into their early years with their already nearly sold-out Hunting High and Low Tour 2019. Starting in Dublin on October 29th the three of them will perform their 1985 breakthrough album Hunting High And Low and some of their biggest hits in the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Poland and Russia until November. In February 2020 they will continue to Dubai, then travel to South-Africa, Australia and Japan for the second leg of the tour.

LOS ANGELES – The Grateful Dead started outgrowing theaters in the late-Seventies as the number of Dead Heads flocking to its summer tours soared. By 1987, the transition to stadiums was necessary to accommodate the arrival of a new generation of fans who’d recently discovered the band through “Touch of Grey” – the Dead’s first and only Top 10 single. 

Today, on what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 77th birthday, Rhino announces the details for an upcoming boxed set that explores the evolution of the Grateful Dead’s stadium concert experience. GIANTS STADIUM: 1987, 1989, 1991 includes five previously unreleased shows that were recorded at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on: July 12, 1987; July 9 and 10, 1989; and June 16 and 17, 1991. Each show has been mixed from the multitrack master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir's TRI Studios in San Rafael, CA, and mastered in HDCD by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. The first three show are mixed from 24-track masters and the final two from 1991 are the only Grateful Dead shows ever recorded to 48-track tape.

The set is available to pre-order now and will ship to arrive on September 27. Production of the set is limited to 10,000 individually numbered copies and will be available in two incarnations: 4,000 copies of the 14CD/2DVD set for $149.98; and 6,000 copies of the 14CD/Blu-ray set for $159.98. Audio from the set will also be available in its entirety exclusively from Dead.net as a digital download in Apple Lossless and FLAC 192/24.

“The five shows in this boxed set include music from three very distinct peaks in the Grateful Dead's performing career,” says David Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist and the set’s producer. “The first show finds the Dead on top of the world, carrying the renewed energy following Jerry's return to performing in late 1986. Two years later, the Dead returned for their first two night run at Giants Stadium, beginning a sustained nine month run of excellence for the band. In 1991, a very different Grateful Dead returned to the Meadowlands, widely considered one of the most inventive, inspired, and creative lineups of the band. What they brought to the stadium in 1991 is still the stuff of legend. Altogether, this very brief   span of slightly less than four years in the Grateful Dead's career is presented with five exceptional shows, demonstrating how different the Dead could be, all the while remaining unmistakably true to their unique sound.” 

GIANTS STADIUM: 1987, 1989, 1991 touches on the Grateful Dead timeline at three interesting points in the group’s history. The first show in the collection was recorded on July 12, 1987, just a few days after the band released In The Dark, the first (and only) Top 10 album the band made during its long, strange trip. In addition to live staples like “Ramble On Rose” and “Morning Dew,” the show featured performances of six songs from their surprise-hit album, including “Hell In A Bucket” and “West L.A. Fadeaway.” 

Two years later, in July 1989, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Brent Mydland, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart returned to Giants Stadium, playing the next two concerts featured in the boxed set. At both shows, the group previewed several songs from its then-forthcoming studio album Built To Last, including “Foolish Heart,” “Victim Or The Crime” and “Just A Little Light.” As a special treat, members of the Neville Brothers sat in for several songs during the July 10, 1989 show, playing on “Iko Iko,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and more.

The final two shows in GIANTS STADIUM were recorded on June 16 and 17, 1991, about a year after the untimely death of keyboardist Brent Mydland in July 1990. For these shows, the band featured two new keyboardists, Vince Welnick and Grammy®-winner Bruce Hornsby. The new members brought with them a renewed energy and a sense of exploration of repertoire that reinvigorated the setlists. Along with playing rarities like “Saint Of Circumstance” and “Might As Well,” the band also wove “Dark Star” in and out of the setlist, making no less than six distinct appearances during the show.

Both June 1991 shows were recorded to 48 tracks of analog audio tape, the only recordings in the Grateful Dead’s vault that went beyond 32 tracks. The second show (6/17/91) is widely considered to be one of the greatest shows the Dead played in its final decade of performing. The entire concert was filmed and the performance is included with the GIANTS STADIUM collection on either two DVDs or a single Blu-ray, both with a surround mix by Norman.

LOS ANGELES – The Ramones’ first live album celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with a new version that’s been updated with remastered sound and expanded with with three unreleased concerts from the same tour. Originally recorded in London on New Year’s Eve 1977 and eventually released as a double album in 1979, It’s Alive delivered a blistering barrage of live takes on classic tracks from the band’s first three albums.

IT’S ALIVE: 40th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available from Rhino on September 27 for $74.98. Produced in a limited and numbered edition of 8,000 copies, the 4CD/2LP 180-gram vinyl set comes packaged in a 12 x 12 hardcover book. It’s accompanied by new liner notes written by legendary record producer and musician Steve Albini and Ed Stasium, who produced and engineered It’s Alive and remastered all of the music included in this collection. This will be the first time that It’s Alive has been released on vinyl in the U.S. In addition, the set will be available through digital and streaming services.

IT’S ALIVE: 40th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION features all four concerts that were professionally recorded during the Ramones’ U.K. tour in December 1977, three making their debut release:  Top Rank, Birmingham (December 28, 1977); Victoria Hall, Stoke-On-Trent (December 29, 1977); Friars, Aylesbury (December 30, 1977); and The Rainbow Theatre, London (December 31, 1977). A previously unreleased version of “Blitzkrieg Bop” from the Top Rank show is available now digitally.

Taking its name from a 1974 horror film, It’s Alive was the last album to feature all four original band members: Dee Dee Ramone, Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone and Tommy Ramone. All four concerts included in the new Deluxe Edition capture the band in peak form as they storm through dozens of songs from the group’s influential catalog.

Among the numerous highlights are electrifying live versions of “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue” and “I Don’t Wanna Walk Around With You” from Ramones (1976), “Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment,” “California Sun” and “Pinhead” from Leave Home (1977) and “Cretin Hop,” “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” and “Rockaway Beach” from Rocket to Russia (1977).
