GRATEFUL DEAD ANNOUNCE “SHAKEDOWN STREAM”
WEEKLY YOUTUBE CONCERT SERIES

Debuts This Friday, April 10, On The Grateful Dead YouTube Channel With Screening Of Classic “Truckin’ Up To Buffalo” Concert From July 4, 1989

Film To Be Preceded By Live Pre-Show With
Grateful Dead Archivist David Lemieux And Historian Gary Lambert

LOS ANGELES – The Grateful Dead have announced a new streaming concert series “Shakedown Stream” that will feature a weekly live stream of one of the band’s classic live performances on the official Grateful Dead YouTube channel. The series kicks off this Friday, April 10, at 8PM EST with a screening of Truckin’ Up To Buffalo, their classic July 4, 1989 concert from Rich Stadium in upstate New York. The screening will be preceded by a live, on-camera pre-show with Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux and historian Gary Lambert. The “Shakedown Stream” live broadcast will also feature a “Donate Now” button for viewers to directly support the MusiCares® COVID-19 Relief Fund to help support the music community during these challenging times.

“Shakedown Stream” was conceived as a platform for Dead Heads of all ages to virtually congregate during the challenging days the world currently faces and connect in a familiar way, via a Grateful Dead show. Fans are encouraged to submit questions for Lemieux and Lambert in advance at the “Shakedown Stream” submission page with a limited number being answered during the live pre-show.

“We've decided to start the streaming video series with the Buffalo '89 show for a couple of primary reasons: it's excellence is indisputable and is something that we think pretty much everyone will enjoy in the absence of actually being able to see live concerts; and, as a tribute to the many rabid, loyal Dead Heads from the hard-hit tri-state area, which has been affected more than anywhere else in the country,” says Lemieux. “To all of the Dead Heads in New York State and beyond, this one's for you.”

The “Shakedown Stream” series will continue next Friday, April 17, with The Grateful Dead Movie, and subsequent weeks will feature not only previously released concerts but also never-before-seen shows from the Dead's video archive. Each “Shakedown Stream” will also kick off with a live, on-camera pre-show with members of the Dead community. Additional shows will be announced soon.

Truckin’ Up To Buffalo features the band’s 21-song concert from July 4, 1989 and captures the Dead in peak form throughout the show. The passionate and energetic performance features Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann on drums, Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals and Brent Mydland on keyboards and vocals. The two sets include some of the band’s best-loved songs including “Bertha,” “Deal,” “Terrapin Station,” and “Touch Of Grey,” along with covers of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “All Along The Watchtower.” The concert spans the band’s legendary career with performances of “Cold Rain And Snow” and “Morning Dew”—from the band’s self-titled 1967 debut—to “I Will Take You Home,” which was released a few months after the show on Built To Last, the band’s last studio album.

GRATEFUL DEAD ORIGINS RELEASED JUNE 12 AHEAD OF RECORD STORE DAY 2020

Grateful Dead and Z2 Comics Reveal Cover Art by Noah Van Sciver For Deluxe Edition Vinyl LP

NEW YORK, NY–With the recent success of partnerships with Yungblud, Poppy and Skillet, Z2 Comics has solidified their place as the premier creator of music-affiliated graphic novels. In 2019, the publisher entered into their largest partnership to date chronicling the history of the iconic Grateful Dead. Grateful Dead Origins takes an in depth and personal look at the formation of one of the most important American rock bands of all time, exploring the early days of Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Pigpen, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The story of the band’s transformation from a bar band performing as the Warlocks to becoming the creators of their own sound and forefathers for the jamband culture is depicted in the original story written by Chris Miskiewicz and illustrated by Noah Van Sciver.

Grateful Dead Origins will be available in a strictly limited collectors deluxe edition to be released on June 12, with a standard edition coming the following week on June 16. The standard softcover edition that will feature an exclusive download of rare selections from the early years of the band. The limited run collector’s deluxe edition will come in a hardcover, oversized, individually-numbered coffee table edition featuring exclusive prints and autographed by the comic creators, along with an exclusive vinyl LP of an unreleased recording from an August 1968 performance at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. The deluxe edition is available for pre-order at www.z2comics.com/shop/grateful-dead. Pre-orders are now available for all configurations of Grateful Dead Origins to arrive in mid-June.

Full vinyl tracklist is below:

Side 1

1. Dark Star (14:33)

2. St. Stephen (04:45)

Side 2

1. The Eleven (11:07)

2. Death Don’t Have No Mercy (08:09)

This previously unreleased show includes the first known West Coast live rendition of “St. Stephen,” and the first known performance of its “William Tell Bridge,” which would join “St. Stephen” to “The Eleven.” The show was recorded to 8-track analog tape, and was mastered by Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser at Airshow Mastering in Boulder, CO.

“We can’t wait for everyone to see and hear the amazing Origins package and we hope it will provide some comfort to music and graphic novel fans alike during these challenging times,” says Z2 publisher Josh Frankel. “Our plan was always to time the release to the week of Record Store Day, giving comic shops and booksellers the ultimate music book for their customers. We will still do that, it will just happen in June now. I assure you, as this project has come together, it has turned into something even more special than we could have ever expected and we know comics readers, music archivists, and Dead Heads everywhere will agree that it was worth the wait.”

“We've seen so many photos and videos of the Grateful Dead in the 1980s and beyond, and even quite a bit from the 1970s. The 1960s, though, largely remain a visual mystery in terms of the band, especially the earliest days, 1965 and 1966, but also through to 1969” Grateful Dead audiovisual archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux. “Grateful Dead Origins brings the band's beginnings to life, artistically, verbally, and musically. We've all seen some photos of the band onstage in those early days, and heard plenty of music from 1966 through 1969, but everything else, how they became the Grateful Dead, has been obscured from the history books only through lack of documentation. While Origins isn't a discovery of primary archival documents from this era, it visually, creatively, and tastefully fills in the gaps that the historical record's archive might have missed. We're thrilled to have worked with such a talented team to write and illustrate this early part of the Dead's story.”

“Jerry Garcia was an avid comic book enthusiast so it is incredibly fitting to have the Grateful Dead’s origin story told in graphic novel form,” says Mark Pinkus, President of Rhino Entertainment. “Z2’s passion for the band’s music and mythology make them the perfect partner to bring the story to life. It has been inspiring to watch the novel’s artwork evolve over the last year and I’m excited that Dead Heads now get to have a preview. Just wait until you see the finished product!”

About Grateful Dead:

Grateful Dead is a social and musical phenomenon that grew into a genuine American treasure. In 1965, an entire generation was linked together by common ideals, gathering by the hundreds and thousands. This movement created a seamless connection between the band and its fans. As the band toured, Dead Heads would follow. Not because it was a part of popular culture, but because it is a true counterculture that exists to this very day-one that earnestly believes in the value of its beliefs. By 1995, Grateful Dead had attracted the most concert goers in the history of the music business, and today remain one of the all-time leaders in concert ticket sales. Eventually, the caravan evolved into a community with various artists, craftsmen and entrepreneurs supplying a growing demand for merchandise that connected them to the music. Today, the connection is as strong as ever. The band was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994 and received a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Their final tally of 2,318 total concerts remains a world record.

1990 Debut Born To Sing Will Be Available Digitally From Rhino On April 3

En Vogue Will Be Featured In An Episode Of Empire That Airs Tonight, March 17

Rare B-side “Mover” Available Today

LOS ANGELES – Thirty years ago, on April 3rd, En Vogue started its reign as one of the most successful female vocal groups of all time. The EV30 celebration gets off to an early start tonight with an appearance on the groundbreaking hit music drama Empire, currently in its sixth and final season. Even sweeter, their performance of “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” is featured in an episode where series star Taraji P. Henson makes her directorial debut. Today, En Vogue is releasing the first song “Mover,” a rare Japanese-only B-side which can be found on all digital platforms.

Soon after, Rhino will revisit En Vogue’s 1990 debut album on BORN TO SING: 30th ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION. This 21-track collection includes a newly remastered version of the original album, plus a selection of rare mixes, most of which are available digitally for the first time. The music will be available on April 3 for $14.99, the same day the original album was released in 1990.

With Born to Sing, En Vogue struck a chord immediately, landing three songs at #1 on the Hot R&B songs chart: “Hold On,” “Lies” and “You Don’t Have To Worry.” Certified platinum, the album was a crossover sensation, reaching #21 on the Billboard 200 chart and #3 on the R&B Albums chart. In addition, the album scored the group numerous honors, including a Billboard Music Award and a Soul Train Award, as well as a Grammy® nomination.

As an added treat, this newly remastered, 30th ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION version of Born to Sing also features remastered versions of nine non-album tracks, including an extended version of “Hold On,” the radio edit for “Don’t Go,” and the Lo Cal Mix of “You Don’t Have to Worry.”

Since the group’s Born To Sing debut in 1990, En Vogue, founded in Oakland, CA by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy with original members Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones, has gone on to sell 20 million albums and still counting. Their many accolades include Billboard awards, American Music Awards, VMAs, and seven Grammy nominations.

Firmly establishing their legacy, En Vogue, now a trio, with original members Ellis and Herron, joined by Rhona Bennett, who has been with the group since 2003, is still in demand, actively touring and recording. In 2018, they released their album, Electric Café, featuring the single “Rocket,” which gave them their first Top 5 hit in 20 years (Adult R&B songs chart). The trio also made an appearance on Chance the Rapper’s 2019 album, The Big Day, on the track “I Got You (Always and Forever).” In October 2019, all five members reunited and performed at the City of Hope Gala honoring Sylvia Rhone.
