Tied To The Album’s 50th Anniversary

The Series’ Debut Episode “Workingman’s Dead 50: Uncle John’s Band” Available Now

Weekly Episodes Premiere Every Thursday
Hosted by Rich Mahan And Jesse Jarnow,
Along With Special Guests From The Grateful Dead Universe

LOS ANGELES – “The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast,” the official Grateful Dead podcast, has launched today. The weekly series is devoted to exploring the music and mythology behind one of the most enduring, progressive, and influential bands in the history of recorded music.

Produced and hosted by singer songwriter and producer Rich Mahan and author and WFMU DJ Jesse Jarnow, the Deadcast’s weekly episodes will present an aural and oral history of the Grateful Dead’s long strange trip. The podcast’s tagline is “For The Committed And The Curious,” as episodes will invite new fans to explore the band’s enormous mythology in digestible chunks and enlighten life-long Dead Heads about corners of the band’s history they never knew existed. No topic will be off limits on “The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” as Mahan and Jarnow explore the band’s outrageous history, innovations, and impact from 1965 to today. Many of the unsolved mysteries of the Dead world will also be explained including: which obscure Macedonian folk song Jerry Garcia borrowed the “Uncle John's Band” melody from; dating the exact writing of “Dire Wolf”; and locating the secret trail between Garcia and Janis Joplin's houses.

For each episode, the hosts will be joined by special guests from the Grateful Dead universe including Trixie Garcia (Garcia’s daughter), David Lemieux (Grateful Dead legacy manager and archivist), Dennis McNally (author and the band’s former publicist), and Bill “Grateful Red” Walton (NBA Champion and famous Dead Head). Future episodes will also include rare interviews with many who were closely involved in the early years of the band including Stephen Barncard, Steve Brown, Brian Godchaux, and Ron and Susan Wickersham, amongst many others.

“The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” debuts in step with the 50th anniversary of the band’s classic album, Workingman’s Dead, which was originally released on June 14, 1970. To celebrate this milestone, the first eight episodes will take deep dives into each song on the album individually. The first episode, available now, takes a look at “Uncle John’s Band” with specials guests including Grateful Dead tour manager Sam Cutler, songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Workingman’s Dead producer Bob Matthews, and collaborator David Nelson.

These special Workingman’s Dead episodes also feature some of the newly unearthed studio outtakes from the album’s recording sessions that were unveiled last week in the new digital collection Workingman’s Dead: The Angel’s Share which is available to stream now.

Compiled from dozens of 16-track reels that were recently discovered in unlabeled boxes, the collection includes outtakes for every song on the album, which have been unheard since they left the studio over 50 years ago. The conversations about the album on “The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” will provide a great companion to these newly uncovered recordings.

Fans have always been a vital part in the Grateful Dead story and “The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” will continue that tradition by collecting and sharing many of these fascinating stories. Fans can visit dead.net/deadcast to submit their own personal accounts and experiences related to the band and the Grateful Dead community to be used on future episodes.

All episodes of “The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” will be available via iTunes, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, Pocket Casts, Overcast and the Grateful Dead channels on YouTube and SoundCloud.

LOS ANGELES – It’s remarkable how the Grateful Dead’s legendary recording archive still has the capacity to completely surprise after so many years, but it certainly does. As it turns out, there has been an ace hiding up its sleeve for 50 years, just waiting for the perfect moment to play it.

Just in time for the 50th anniversary of Workingman’s Dead comes THE ANGEL’S SHARE, a revelatory audio discovery of more than two-and-a-half hours of unreleased studio outtakes from the album’s recording sessions. Compiled from dozens of 16-track reels that were recently discovered in unlabeled boxes, the collection includes outtakes for every song on the album, which have been unheard since they left the studio over 50 years ago. Under the supervision of Grateful Dead legacy manager David Lemieux, engineer Brian Kehew and archivist Mike Johnson spent countless hours compiling and piecing these reels together to create the final opus.

The intimate recordings on THE ANGEL’S SHARE mystically transport listeners to Pacific High Recordings Studio in San Francisco during the album’s three-week-long sessions in February and March 1970. A mix of partial and complete takes, the in-studio performances are peppered with conversations that make it feel like you’re in the studio with the band: Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and Bob Weir. Like a fly-on-the-studio-wall, listeners can now get a view of the band’s process in the studio like never before. You can hear discussions of pacing and arrangements, “talkback” from the studio to the control room with the album’s producers, Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor-Jackson, and even the shuffling of feet on the studio floor.

WORKINGMAN’S DEAD: THE ANGEL’S SHARE is available to stream today, just a few weeks removed from the 50th anniversary of the album’s original release date: June 14, 1970.

The collection takes its name from a term used by whiskey distillers. The “angel’s share” is the percentage of whiskey that’s lost to evaporation each year as the liquid is aged in oak barrels. Much like the whiskey distillation process, there were also ingredients that were vital to the creation of Workingman’s Dead that were lost and did not end up on the final album, the band’s own version of the “angel’s share”. If not for good fortune, these outtakes would have been lost to the angels as well, just like those gallons of whiskey. In this case, everyone gets to share a taste of the “angel’s share.”

There are few overdubs on these recordings, resulting in a stripped-back sound that puts the focus on the core of each song. That’s especially true of the various instrumental takes included in the collection. For example, the lack of vocals only serves to intensify the aching beauty of “High Time” and the joyful rush of “Uncle John’s Band.”

Nearly every song the band recorded for Workingman’s Dead had been fine-tuned on stage during the summer and fall tours of 1969. One exception is “New Speedway Boogie,” which had only been performed live three times before the album was recorded. On THE ANGEL’S SHARE, you can hear the song settle into a steady groove over several takes amassing nearly 30 minutes, as Garcia at one point jokingly appeals to his bandmates, “Keep it nice and f***ing together, you f***ers.”

Most songs on THE ANGEL’S SHARE include at least one outtake with vocals. In the case of “Easy Wind” there are several versions that feature Pigpen prowling and howling his way through this stomping blues number. At the end of one particularly ripping take, you can hear him say, “I wants to listen to that one.” The complete outtake for “Casey Jones” that closes out the collection provides another highlight. After running through the song a couple of times without vocals, the band uncorks a blazing take that has Garcia exclaiming off-mic at the end, “F***ing A, man!”

THE ANGEL’S SHARE serves as a special gift to the Dead fans and pairs nicely with the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Workingman’s Dead that is set for release on July 10 as a 3-CD set and digitally. The collection is part of the band’s ongoing series of deluxe editions and features a newly remastered version of the album plus an unreleased show recorded on February 21, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre.

Parlophone Records is proud to announce that DAVID BOWIE OUVREZ LE CHIEN (LIVE DALLAS ‘95) a previously unreleased live album will be made available on all streaming services on July 3. “Teenage Wildlife (Live Dallas ’95)” is available to stream today. OUVREZ LE CHIEN was recorded live at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas on October 13, 1995 during the US leg of the Outside tour.

The phrase OUVREZ LE CHIEN ("open the dog" in French) originally appeared in the song “All The Madmen” taken from THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Bowie also used the phrase in his 1993 single “Buddha Of Suburbia,” once again spelling ‘ouvre’ without a ‘z.’ The ‘z’ was restored when the phrase and its English translation were prominently featured on the stage set of the 1995 Outside tour.

OUVREZ LE CHIEN also features two bonus tracks: “Moonage Daydream” and “Under Pressure” recorded live at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham on December 13, 1995. Previously available on the HALLO SPACEBOY CD single, both tracks are now making their streaming debut.

OUVREZ LE CHIEN was produced by David Bowie and recorded by Steve Guest. *Mixed by David Richards at Mountain Studios, Switzerland, assisted by Sam Curtis. The musicians are Bowie (vocals and saxophone), Carlos Alomar (rhythm guitar,) Reeves Gabrels (lead guitar and vocals), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass and vocals), Zachary Alford (drums) , Peter Schwartz  (keyboards and synthesisers), George Simms (vocals),  and Mike Garson (piano and keyboards).
The cover image of OUVREZ LE CHIEN was taken by Iman during the ’95 tour.

“I feel that we’re on the brink of something. It is going to be strict and wild and pretty.”
— Prince, 1986

(Minneapolis, MN – June 25, 2020) – Overflowing with musical ideas and topical lyrics that sound just as relevant today as they did when they were initially released, Prince’s iconic double album Sign O’ The Times captured the artist in a period of complete reinvention. The final 16-track album included just some of the countless songs Prince recorded in the prolific period of 1985-1987, which saw the dissolution of his band The Revolution, the construction of his innovative recording complex, Paisley Park, and the creation (and ultimate abandonment) of the albums Dream Factory, Camille, and Crystal Ball.

This September 25, The Prince Estate, in partnership with Warner Records, will reissue Sign O’ The Times via all physical, digital and streaming partners, with the classic album remastered for the very first time, and featuring 63 previously unreleased tracks, as well as a previously unreleased 2+ hour video concert performance from Prince’s legendary vault that illuminate his wide-ranging and prolific creativity in this era. Pre-order here.

The reissue suite will be comprised of the following formats:

•    Super Deluxe Edition (8CD+DVD / 13LP+DVD / audio-only download and streaming)
•    Deluxe Edition (3CD / 4LP 180g vinyl / download and streaming)
•    Remastered album (2CD / 2LP 180g peach vinyl / download and streaming)

Following the successful release of the 1999 Super Deluxe Edition in the fall of 2019, the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition represents the deepest dive to date into Prince’s vault, and includes a total of 92 audio tracks across eight CDs and 13 180g vinyl records.

The Super Deluxe Edition brings fans all the audio material that Prince officially released in 1987, as well as 45 previously unissued studio songs recorded between May 1979 and July 1987, and a complete live audio performance from the June 20, 1987 stop on the Sign O’ The Times Tour at Stadium Galgenwaard in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

In addition, both CD and vinyl sets also boast a brand-new DVD containing the complete, previously unreleased New Year’s Eve benefit concert at Paisley Park on December 31, 1987, which was Prince’s final performance of the Sign O’ The Times Tour stage show and his only on-stage collaboration with jazz legend Miles Davis.

The Super Deluxe Edition set also features a 120-page hardcover book containing Prince’s previously unseen handwritten lyrics for many of the songs from the era, including the hits “U Got The Look,” “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man,” and “Hot Thing,” iconic unseen images from the era taken by Prince’s primary photographer in the mid-1980s to early 90s, Jeff Katz, plus images of archive assets including original analog tape reels and studio tracking sheets.

The Super Deluxe Edition book is completed with brand-new liner notes by Prince’s creative peers and friends Dave Chappelle (in conversation with photographer Mathieu Bitton) and Lenny Kravitz; Prince’s longtime engineer Susan Rogers; Daphne A. Brooks, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of African American Studies, American Studies and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Yale University; Minneapolis radio host and author Andrea Swensson, host of the Official Prince Podcast; and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.

The Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition shines a forensic light on the creative output of this truly unique musician, songwriter, producer, and performer at a pivotal point in his career and demonstrates why his unsurpassed body of work continues to generate so much love and passion around the world.

As a companion collector piece, fans have the opportunity to order a numbered 7” singles boxed set, strictly limited to 1,987 units, and manufactured by Third Man Pressing in Detroit. Containing remastered audio for all four official 7” singles released in 1987, as well as the two official Warner Records promo singles, the set contains a brand new 7” single comprising two versions of the previously unreleased track “Witness 4 The Prosecution”. The set is available to order now, exclusively via the official Prince Store and Third Man Records Store, and is expected to ship on or before August 14.

“Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 1)” is now available on all digital download and streaming platforms. Featured on the Super Deluxe set, the track was recorded on March 14, 1986 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd. home studio and was originally intended for inclusion on the halted Dream Factory album. Having already created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century, Kraftwerk have announced a range of first time digital releases being made available to the world on July 3. They include the stunning Dolby Atmos/HD Surround mix of the Grammy® Award winning 2017 audio/video documentary 3-D The Catalog which will now be available to stream for the first time through Amazon HD and Tidal. Simultaneously, the stereo version of 3-D Der Katalog (the German language edition of 3-D The Catalog) will also be made available worldwide.

In addition to the two 3-D The Catalog releases, the original German language versions of five Kraftwerk studio albums will also be available to stream and download worldwide. This is the first time they have been made available globally, as they were only previously accessible in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The albums are: Trans Europa Express, Die Mensch-Maschine, Computerwelt, Techno Pop and The Mix. Autobahn, Radio-Activity/Radio-Activität and Tour De France all have just one recording each available worldwide.

Hearing the albums in Kraftwerk’s native tongue brings a further dimension to these exceptional recordings, the vocabulary providing a different flow to their English counterparts. For some Kraftwerk fans, the German version of the Computer World/Computerwelt album is the definitive recording, the same can arguably be applied to iconic tracks such as "Showroom Dummies," "Trans Europe Express," "The Model," "The Robots," and "The Man-Machine." Now everyone in the world can make their own judgement and join the debate, the joy of it all is simply that they are out there and available to stream and download.

KRAFTWERK
The multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in Düsseldorf, Germany 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.

Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. AUTOBAHN 1974, RADIO-ACTIVITY 1975, TRANS EUROPE EXPRESS 1977, THE MAN-MACHINE 1978, COMPUTER WORLD 1981, TECHNO POP 1986, THE MIX 1991, TOUR DE FRANCE 2003. Their compositions, using innovative techniques, electronic sounds and synthetic voices combined with computerized rhythms, had a major musical influence on Electro, Hip Hop, Techno and Synth-Pop. In 2014, Kraftwerk founders Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider were honored with the "Lifetime Achievement" Grammy® Award.

In recent years and under the direction of Ralf Hütter, Kraftwerk have presented their immersive 3-D The Catalog 12345678 live show through festivals and art museums, which began with a performance at the Venice Biennale in 2005. Their first retrospective was held at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2012, followed by a further presentation at Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf in January 2013. Since then, the group have taken The Catalog 12345678 show through Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London), Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo), Opera House (Sydney), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris), Neue National Galerie (Berlin) and Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao).

In 2018, Kraftwerk won the Grammy for “Best Dance/Electronic Album” for 3-D The Catalog 12345678, a complete 3-D audio and video retrospective of their albums.

In July 2018, working with the European Space Agency, Kraftwerk hosted a live satellite link up with German astronaut Alexander Gerst on board the International Space Station, where he joined Kraftwerk from space in a performance of "Spacelab" from their legendary 1978 album The Man-Machine.

For their hi-tech live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert, Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.
