From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) Arrives June 21st, Featuring Unreleased Demos & Live Show From The Famed Wall of Sound Era

Today, with Rhino’s surprise release of From The Mars Hotel: The Angel’s Share, the Grateful Dead vaults have once again been opened. Featuring 16 newly unearthed session recordings, the digital collection brings listeners directly into San Francisco’s Coast Recorders during the spring of 1974, revealing the band’s real-time process as they crafted such eternal staples as “Scarlet Begonias,” “Ship Of Fools,” “China Doll,” “U.S. Blues,” “Unbroken Chain” and more that would make up their classic From The Mars Hotel LP. The evolution of all of those songs and other album highlights is charted throughout this fourth edition of the band’s fan-favorite Angel’s Share series. Like previous installments that accompanied milestone reissues of Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and Wake Of The Flood, From The Mars Hotel: The Angel’s Share brings together hours of expertly-curated outtakes, alternate versions, acoustic mixes, unexpected moments and revelations that have never been heard or available on DSPs until now.

As these Angel’s Share recordings further showcase, the Grateful Dead were cooking with gas in the runup to From The Mars Hotel. The band had successfully emerged from a series of hectic, harrowing times, and would soon follow their transformative Wake Of The Flood with this second self-released album from their very own Grateful Dead Records. During the mere eight months that had passed between the two beloved LPs, the group also played some of their most exploratory live music and largest venues to date, famously amplified by the homemade, 75-ton Wall of Sound that they debuted on March 23rd, 1974. While several of the album’s formative songs would first be introduced into setlists along that season’s tour, the Grateful Dead spent two months recording and honing them in the studio for the album.

In honor of its 50th Anniversary, From The Mars Hotel has also been reissued and expanded with rediscovered material and rarities. Out June 21st via Rhino, six days before the album’s original release five decades ago, From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) features remastered audio by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer David Glasser, with Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction. Produced for release by Grateful Dead Legacy Manager and Audio Archivist, David Lemieux, the deluxe edition includes demos of “China Doll” and “Wave That Flag” – the song that became “U.S. Blues” – as well as a previously unreleased live performance of the Grateful Dead at University of Nevada-Reno on 5/12/1974, where a massive wind storm was no match for the Wall of Sound.

Furthermore, From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Remaster) will be released on June 21st as a single 180-gram black vinyl LP, limited edition Neon Pink vinyl, limited edition “Ugly Rumors” custom vinyl exclusive to Dead.net, and a specially-designed picture disc created in partnership with zoetrope pioneer Drew Tetz. When viewed with a camera or strobe, the zoetrope LP will appear to animate, and can be pre-ordered now along with the rest of From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Remaster) variants.

As part of From The Mars Hotel’s 50th Anniversary celebration, the Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast is unlocking the many secrets behind the album. Along with a track-by-track breakdown of the LP, the podcast’s ninth season is currently telling the story of the Wall of Sound, with archival audio of its mastermind – legendary LSD chemist Owsley Stanley – and new interviews with those who made the game-changing, larger-than-life speaker system a reality. With five million downloads and counting, new episodes of Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast will continue to premiere every week

Seal (Deluxe Edition)

Singer’s 1994 Sophomore Album Remastered And Expanded With Unreleased Music For 30th Anniversary

2-CD/Blu-ray And 2-LP Versions Available From Rhino On June 14

LOS ANGELES – Building on the breakout success of his 1991 debut, Seal soared to even greater heights in 1994 with his second eponymous album, featuring the international smash hit, “Kiss From A Rose.” In honor of the album’s 30th anniversary, Rhino will release a Deluxe Edition that includes a newly remastered version of the original, expanded with previously unreleased recordings.

Seal (Deluxe Edition) is set for release on June 14 in various formats. A 2-LP version will be available on black vinyl from Rhino.com and “Milky White” vinyl exclusively from Barnes & Noble. A 2-CD/Blu-ray version will feature exclusive Dolby Atmos and PCM 24/96 High Resolution Stereo mixes of the album.

Seal (often called Seal II) debuted in May 1994, showcasing the artist’s distinctive blend of pop, dance, and soul music. Produced by Trevor Horn, the album’s 11 tracks include standouts like “Prayer For The Dying,” “Bring It On” with Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman of Prince and the Revolution, and the duet “If I Could,” featuring the incomparable Joni Mitchell.

Seal topped the U.K. album chart and peaked at No. 15 in the U.S., where it was certified 4x platinum. In the summer of 1995, “Kiss From A Rose” was featured in the blockbuster film Batman Forever, propelling it to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earning Seal three Grammy® Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Seal (Deluxe Edition) unveils ten previously unreleased recordings, offering alternate versions of album tracks like “Newborn Friend” and “Don’t Cry,” as well as a haunting take on “Dreaming In Metaphors” that features Seal alone at the piano.

The Deluxe Edition collects additional gems from that era, including the B-side “Blues In E,” a cover of Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle” from the Space Jam soundtrack, and a version of “Manic Depression” that Seal recorded with guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck for Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

The Other Two & You

Debut Reissued On LP And CD

LOS ANGELES — Today, The Other Two announces the reissue of their debut album, The Other Two & You, available May 31. Pre-order Here

Formed by New Order band members Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert in 1990, The Other Two & You was recorded in part at Real World Studios in 1990 and produced by Stephen Hague with contributions from A Certain Ratio’s Jez Kerr. The lead track, “Tasty Fish,” was released to critical acclaim that year, with the album coming in 1993 on London Records, following the closure of Factory Records. The record started life as a collection of tracks while composing for the 90’s hit TV show “Making Out,” the main theme of which was an adaptation of New Order’s track “Vanishing Point.”

Stephen and Gillian stated, "Is it really 31 years since this was first released? It doesn’t seem that long ago, but that’s old age for you. We’re both very excited that this album (our first attempt at the pop solo spin-off malarkey) is getting another outing. This time with added vinyl connoisseur appeal and remixed sleeve artwork

The 2024 reissue contains a previously unreleased version of “Innocence” from Love To Infinity on both CD and Vinyl.

Bursting Out (The Inflated Edition)

Jethro Tull’s 1978 Live Album Reissued On 3CD/3DVD Boxed Set Remixed By Steven Wilson

LOS ANGELES - Bursting Out, Jethro Tull’s first live album, was recorded at various locations during the European Heavy Horses tour in May and June 1978. Now, the album will be reissued in an expanded 3CD/3DVD format, remixed by the legendary Steven Wilson with an array of extras.

  • CD 2: Jethro Tull live: Bursting Out (Part 2) - A Steven Wilson stereo remix  Soundcheck recordings - A Steven Wilson stereo remix. Tracks 11-13 previously unreleased
  • CD 3: Contains an edited version of the 1978 Madison Square Garden Show which was issued in 2009 but now mixed by Steven Wilson.
  • DVDs 1 & 2 have the remixed tracks in 96/24 stereo and 5.1 surround plus the flat transfers of the original album at 96/24 stereo.
  • DVD 3 has the full 93-minute MSG show, including 50+ minutes of video which was part of a transatlantic broadcast with the BBC and Radio 1. The audio is 48/24 stereo and 5.1 surround.

Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson said:

"A live extravaganza from the 70s Jethro Tull, this was recorded over several nights in different venues on a portable 8-track tape recorder and transferred to 2” multitrack when I got home after the tours.  I had to listen all through to many shows and pick the best live versions. But much of it was, at least, from the concert in Bern, Switzerland, where dear Claude Nobs came to introduce the band in his inimitable style. Also featuring on this box set collection is the live concert from Madison Square Gardens recorded a few months later and shown live on BBC TV in the UK. A scary experience for the band as it was, we were told, the first time a live rock concert had been the subject of a live satellite broadcast.

The band lineup at this time was a fine-tuned machine and, although missing the unwell John Glascock for the MSG show, it serves as a fine testimony for the many wonderful shows we did in the 70s before general touring fatigue and burn-out began a year or so later.

Enjoy vintage Tull at its 70s best!"

When it was first reissued on CD in 1990, Bursting Out was available as a double-disc CD in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, but as a single CD release in the United States, with three tracks (“Quatrain,” “Sweet Dream” and “Conundrum”) omitted to fit the 80 minutes CD length, while the double-disc 1990 CD version in the United Kingdom (and Europe) incorporated the first track for both discs (the Introductions) in the song that follows. In 2004, the complete album was released worldwide as a two-disc set with the Introductions as separate tracks.

Tales Of The Great Rum Runners (Deluxe Edition)

Career-Spanning Archival Series Launches With Songwriter’s 1974 Solo Debut Remastered And Expanded With Unreleased Music
In Celebration Of Its 50th Anniversary

2-CD And 2-LP Versions Available From Rhino On June 7

LOS ANGELES – Rhino is launching a new career-spanning archival series honoring Robert Hunter’s work as a solo artist with a deluxe reissue of his 1974 debut, Tales of the Great Rum Runners. While Hunter is widely revered as the primary lyricist for the Grateful Dead, this series will explore the depth of his solo work, offering a renewed appreciation for his exceptional artistry.

Tales Of The Great Rum Runners (Deluxe Edition) will be available on June 7 from Rhino on 2-CD and 2-LP.

This Deluxe Edition introduces a freshly remastered version of the original album alongside 16 previously unreleased recordings, including alternate versions of album tracks and several session outtakes. All the music has been remastered from the original master tapes by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer David Glasser using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction.

Originally released in spring 1974, Tales Of The Great Rum Runners marked the inaugural release on Round Records, an offshoot of the newly formed Grateful Dead Records. Among its 13 tracks were several destined to become staples of Hunter’s live repertoire, like “Boys In The Barroom,” “Rum Runners,” and “It Must Have Been The Roses.”

Recorded at Mickey Hart’s converted barn studio in Novato, California, the album reveals Hunter’s multifaceted talents and features him singing and playing various instruments, including guitar, tin whistle, and bagpipes on “Children’s Lament.” He was accompanied by a revolving cast of Bay Area musicians on the album, including Jerry Garcia, Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, and Mickey Hart of the Dead, as well as guitarist Barry Melton (Country Joe & The Fish), bassist David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service/Jefferson Starship), and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage (New Riders Of The Purple Sage).

Tales Of The Great Rum Runners (Deluxe Edition) comes with 16 previously unreleased bonus tracks, offering new insight into the album’s evolution. Among these are alternate versions of six songs that made the album (“Keys To The Rain” and “It Must Have Been The Roses”), plus ten gems that did not (“The Word,” “Buck Dancer’s Choice,” and “Elijah.”)

In the collection’s liner notes, Jesse Jarnow (author, DJ, and cohost of the “Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast”) deftly captures the essence of the album: “The music was as warm and handmade as the tapestries and tie-dyes adorning the Barn studio walls, an idiosyncratic continuation of the cosmic folk vocabulary that Hunter and Dead explored on Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. In an era when the Dead’s own studio albums were growing slicker, Rum Runners doubled down on organic earthiness.”

On October 8, 2024, Hachette Books will publish The Silver Snaling Trumpet: The Birth of the Grateful Dead—The Lost Manuscript of Robert Hunter, which was penned by legendary Dead lyricist Robert Hunter in the early 1960s, but left unpublished in his attic. For decades, passionate fans of the Grateful Dead have discussed the existence of a “lost manuscript”—a sort of holy grail—the novelistic origin story of the band. The book will feature a foreword by John Mayer, an introduction by Dennis McNally, and an afterword by Brigid Meier, a close friend of Hunter’s. Fans will experience the early days of Hunter, Jerry Garcia, and their cohorts, following them into the stacks at Kepler’s Books, to rent instruments at Swain’s House of Music, and through the countryside on road trips. Readers will witness impromptu jams, inspired intellectual pranks, and dialogue that is, by turns, amusing and brilliant and outrageous. The Silver Snarling Trumpet illustrates how Hunter’s psychedelic expression and wordplay became the soul of the Dead. The book will be available wherever books are sold and can be pre-ordered now at your favorite local bookstore or online. Pre-Order HERE.
