LOS ANGELES – When Curtis Mayfield launched his solo career 50 years ago, America was at a new crossroads. The revolt of the 60s had laid the groundwork for both progress and protest in the 70s, which laid bare intense divisions in the country.

The memories of that era in today’s political climate underlines the relevance of Curtis’ music, highlighted in the new collection PEOPLE NEVER GIVE UP, debuting today, October 30, 2020. The collection is available together for the first time on all the leading music streaming platforms. The official lyric video to "Power to the People" is available today, here.

Curated by the Mayfield family and Rhino, the collection, a classic song list of Curtis Mayfield’s Civil Rights-era songs, is a reminder that the “People Have The Power,” as the country heads into a contentious election in a watershed year. It’s a rich assemblage of culturally-important music that symbolizes an era of great social change in America that continues to this day.

Referencing Curtis Mayfield’s role in the civil right movement, the late Congressman and civil rights pioneer, JOHN LEWIS, recalls a Curtis-rooted ritual that saw him through the early 1960s on the front lines of the movement:

After being released from a small-town jail, he would head back to wherever he was staying—usually a local family’s house—take a long shower, put on jeans and a fresh shirt, find a little restaurant where he could order a burger and a cold soda and drop a quarter in the jukebox and play Curtis Mayfield or Aretha. He would sit down and, as he wrote in his memoir, “let that music wash over me, just wash right through me. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt anything so sweet. John Lewis (The Economist)

When young Civil Rights activists boarded the “Freedom Rider” buses in the early 1960s to travel south to engage in protests and sit-ins, to fight for the right of Black people to eat a burger, use the public restroom or sit on a bus seat of their choice, they often had Curtis Mayfield on their minds. So too did the young black students as they marched, in the streets, outside the schools and universities, to the lunch counters… and on their way to jail. So too did the movers and shakers of the Civil Rights Movement, from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on down.

The No. 1 sing-along on the Freedom Rides was “Keep on Pushing,” the Curtis Mayfield composition that inspired and fired up the Civil Rights campaign crowd. Dr. King often used Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” with its all-inclusive lyrics, as the music to move his marchers and named it the Movement’s unofficial anthem.

Mayfield wrote the song a year after the historic March on Washington that resulted in Dr. King’s monumental “I Have a Dream” oration but now it has come to symbolize that occasion, the hope, spirit and struggle.

Music historians of the era will often concentrate on “We Shall Overcome” or “Blowin’ in the Wind” - but if it came to the Peoples’ Choice, especially if it was an African-American, it would be Curtis Mayfield.

His was the music that aroused – and when necessary, quieted - the crowds. Mayfield songs, as rapper Chuck D. has noted, told the African-American communities “I got your back.”

Andrew Jackson Young was one of the very first to suggest that Mayfield was more than just another musician hungry for a Top 40 hit, but was a political figure of sorts. And people pay attention to Andrew Young - the man is, after all, a former United Nations Ambassador, former Mayor of Atlanta, activist and pastor and supporter and close friend of Dr. King; Young noted “You have to think of Curtis Mayfield as a prophetic, visionary teacher of our people and of our time... who sang of the triumph and of the glory of us coming together as a people.”

Mayfield (“I’m an entertainer”) would have none of it, but he has been compared by some to Dr. King for his impact on the Civil Rights Movement. He did accept that his music played its part, just as it would in the other great shifts in Black neighborhoods over the decade of the 1960s – Black Pride, but also the plague of poverty, drugs and violence in inner city life.

“We’re A Winner” (1967), originally recorded by The Impressions, was another important landmark in Mayfield’s writing, a masterful popular recording dealing with the subject of Black Pride, announcing firmly that the time for self pity was over. “We’re A Winner” was a different kind of inspirational song from Mayfield to his African American base, encouraging reason over riot.

Here Mayfield urges his audience to "Keep on pushin'/like your leaders tell you to" - Dr. King, Stokely Carmichael, etc. Mayfield’s previous compositions picked up by the Movement stemmed directly from his gospel roots and were more general in tone.

“We’re A Winner” hit directly at racial politics in America and fueled a trend as similar follow up songs speaking to Black identity and the politics of race; music from soul artists such as James Brown and Sly Stone. Mayfield also used the phrase as the motto for his Chicago-based Curtom Records label.

It is ironic that several radio stations in America, when rioting flared up in some cities, banned “We’re A Winner” because of the lyricism, apparently ignoring the message of reason they contain. “We were young and didn’t know these songs would have that effect,” Mayfield told the Chicago Tribune.

“We just came back from Madrid one time, and we were seeing kids 17 and 18 singing our songs. I couldn’t believe that,” said Mayfield. “You realize that songs like ‘We’re a Winner’ and ‘Choice of Colors’ inspired people, even today. I was talking to Andy Young and he told me how they would sing ‘Amen’ and ‘Keep on Pushing’ during the freedom marches. It gave them inspiration to keep on doing what they were doing. It’s great to know we had a role in that.” The version of the song heard on this collection is originally from Curtis Live!

Mayfield has been given an honored place in the music dialogue of the Civil Rights Movement, attained without veering from his other purpose, to make chart hits, with a great groove; to be an entertainer. That these gospel grooves held a message is a bonus for us all. Modestly, Curtis Mayfield would refuse the honorary title of The Preacher, he said: “I was capable of being able to say these things and yet not make a person feel as though they’re being preached at.”

A few years ago, in tribute to his cultural significance as a songwriter and recording artist, Curtis’ “People Get Ready” was inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

Grammy Award winning Curtis Mayfield wrote and recorded a string of hits with The Impressions (Curtis & The Impressions were honored last December with an historical plaque in Chattanooga, where The Impressions were born, late last year) before leaving the influential soul-gospel group to embark upon a solo career that began in 1970 and produced some of his greatest work.

Known as the “Gentle Genius,” Mayfield wrote and produced more than 1,700 songs in a short lifetime and was a key architect in creating the everlasting Chicago Soul sound. Still one of the most sampled artists in music, he’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice – first as a member of The Impressions and later as a solo artist. Before his death in 1999, Mayfield was presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by Bruce Springsteen.

Regarding those recording his songs, the line forms on the left: Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Steppenwolf, the Staple Singers, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Fishbone, Sinead O’Connor, UB40, The Jam – all have Mayfield material in their portfolios.

LOS ANGELES – Dead & Company jumpstarted the band’s “Fall Fun Run” mini tour last year in New York City with sold out shows at Madison Square Garden on Halloween and November 1. With the anniversaries for those shows quickly approaching, Dead & Company will release both concerts digitally on October 23. The group’s cover of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London” – the encore Halloween night – is available today on digital download and streaming services. Click here to listen now.

Like the other shows in Dead & Company’s ongoing digital concert series, both live performances will be available through all digital download and streaming services. In addition, the concerts will be offered in Apple Lossless and FLAC formats from Dead.net. Live audio for these recordings was mixed and remastered by Dead & Company’s Front of House Engineer, Derek Featherstone, and the band’s Recording Engineer, Ross Harris.

Halloween is one of the most eagerly anticipated dates on the Dead Head calendar and last year’s show was no exception. Despite the festive mood, however, there was a solemn undercurrent to the occasion as the band performed for the first time since the passing of longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.

In a deeply moving opening to the show, Grateful Dead band members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bob Weir took to the stage by themselves while their newer bandmates John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti and Oteil Burbridge waited in the wings. The trio launched into “Ripple,” one of the most beloved songs Hunter wrote with Jerry Garcia, before the rest of the band joined them mid-song. That night, every song the band played – with the exception of the “Werewolves Of London” encore – was co-written by Hunter, a fitting and inspired tribute to the Grateful Dead’s beloved bard.

The following night, the power of Grateful Dead music to transcend generational boundaries was not only evident by the range of ages in the audience, but also on stage, where the band welcomed a surprise guest to the stage, Grammy® nominated, 25-year-old singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers. She immediately showed why she’s one of the most acclaimed new artists to have emerged in recent years with her beautiful harmony vocals (and one verse on lead) on another Garcia-Hunter immortal “Friend Of The Devil.” Later, she made a return appearance for the encore to help sing a cover of The Band’s classic “The Weight.”

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. Since its formation, the band has completed seven tours, playing to 2.8 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Having toured consistently since its 2015 debut, the band has grossed $307 million across 152 shows.

Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record.

LOS ANGELES – In advance of tomorrow’s release of the Morrison Hotel: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, The Doors have unveiled DOOR 70, a new platform that lets fans build their ultimate Doors playlist. At www.door70.com, fans can choose songs from any classic Doors album to assemble their own personal playlist, which can be listened to on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and YouTube Music and be shared across social media platforms. Fans can also unlock exclusive Doors content through building playlists via DOOR 70, such as video messages from guitarist Robby Krieger revealing untold stories from the band’s history.

The Doors also recently previewed an unheard studio outtake of “Roadhouse Blues” from Morrison Hotel: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. The track begins with Jim Morrison setting the scene of the song to the rest of the band. “We’re driving in a ’57 Chevy to an old roadhouse. Can you dig it? It’s about 1:30 and we’re not driving too fast, but we’re not driving too slow either. We’ve got a six-pack of beer in the car, and a few joints, and we’re just listening to the radio and driving to the roadhouse through nature. Dig it?” says Morrison before the song kicks in with the now iconic opening riff from Krieger.

The Doors returned to their roots and were reborn a rock ’n’ roll band on Morrison Hotel, the group’s fifth studio album and fifth consecutive gold-certified record. Completed in only a few weeks and released in February 1970, the hard-charging album took its name from the Skid Row hotel in downtown Los Angeles that’s featured in the iconic cover photo taken by Henry Diltz.

To commemorate the album’s 50-year anniversary, Rhino checks in again at the Morrison Hotel with a limited edition 2-CD/1-LP set that will be available this Friday, October 9 for $54.98. Morrison Hotel: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition includes the original album newly remastered by The Doors’ longtime engineer and mixer Bruce Botnick, plus a bonus disc of unreleased studio outtakes, and the original album on 180-gram virgin vinyl. The music will also be available from digital and streaming services the same day.

For this new collection, which was recently awarded 5 out of 5 stars from Mojo Magazine, the original album has been expanded with more than an hour of unreleased recordings taken from the sessions for Morrison Hotel. These 19 outtakes transport listeners into the studio with Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger, and Ray Manzarek for an unprecedented perspective on the making of the album.

Botnick says: “There are many takes, different arrangements, false starts, and insightful studio conversations between the band – who were in the studio – and producer Paul Rothchild – who was in the control room. It’s like being a fly on the wall.”

Several of these unheard recordings spotlight how “Queen Of The Highway” and “Roadhouse Blues” evolved across multiple sessions. It’s especially interesting to hear how the band played with different bass players on “Roadhouse Blues.” Early versions include Harvey Brooks, who played on the band’s previous album, The Soft Parade. Later takes feature guitar legend Lonnie Mack on bass along with The Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian on harmonica who, due to contractual restrictions at the time, had to be credited as “G. Puglese.”

Among the treasure trove of unreleased outtakes are also rough versions of Morrison Hotel tracks “Peace Frog” and “Blue Sunday,” as well as The Doors rarity “I Will Never Be Untrue.” The collection also captures some incredible session outtakes of the band jamming on cover versions of the Motown classic “Money (That’s What I Want)” and B.B. King’s “Rock Me.”

Veteran rock journalist David Fricke tells the tale behind this classic album in the set’s detailed liner notes. He writes: “As spring turned to summer in the last year of the 1960s, The Doors were a band in suspended animation. Singer Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore were off the road and in serious legal jeopardy after Morrison’s profane meltdown during a show at Miami’s Dinner Key Auditorium…The Doors were also exhausted and uncertain of their recording future after the protracted studio drama and uneven experiment of their fourth album, The Soft Parade…It was a season of chaos and anxiety. But The Doors were on the road to Morrison Hotel.”

A new line of official Morrison Hotel merchandise is also available in celebration of the album’s 50th anniversary. Fans can visit www.thedoors.com for exclusive hoodies, sweats, socks, a t-shirt, a jean jacket, and a key chain from the Morrison Hotel.
