The title OUVREZ LE CHIEN (“open the dog” in French) originally appeared in the song “All The Madmen” taken from The Man Who Sold The World album which celebrates its 50th anniversary in November of this year. Bowie also used the phrase in the lyrics of his 1993 single “Buddha Of Suburbia,” once again spelling “ouvre” without a “z.” The “z” was restored when the phrase and its English translation were prominently featured in the stage set of the 1995 Outside tour.

OUVREZ LE CHIEN was produced by David Bowie and recorded by Steve Guest. The musicians are Bowie – vocals and saxophone, Carlos Alomar – rhythm guitar, Reeves Gabrels – lead guitar and vocals, Gail Ann Dorsey – bass and vocals, Zachary Alford – drums, Peter Schwartz - musical director, keyboards and synthesisers, George Simms – vocals, Mike Garson – piano and keyboards.

The cover image of OUVREZ LE CHIEN was taken by Iman during the ’95 tour.

London Parlophone Records is proud to announce details for the digital single release of DAVID BOWIE's "THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD (2020 MIX)" digital single release.

This November sees the 50th Anniversary of the North American release of the original The Man Who Sold The World album. The rest of the world would have to wait until April 1971 to witness Bowie’s landmark entry into the 1970s. Originally titled Metrobolist, the album's name was changed at the last minute -- the original stereo master tapes were in fact labelled Metrobolist, with the title The Man Who Sold The World being added subsequently.

The 2020 re-release of the album under its Metrobolist moniker, remixed by original producer Tony Visconti, it is preceded by the digital single release of "The Man Who Sold The World (2020 mix)." The track was not released as a single by Bowie at the time, only appearing as the B-side to Life On Mars? on RCA Records in June '73. It wasn't until the 1974 version by Scottish singer Lulu (produced by Bowie and Mick Ronson) that the song gained mainstream attention. In subsequent years, Bowie’s 1979 performance of the song on Saturday Night Live and Nirvana’s cover on the classic MTV Unplugged album, among others, would establish and reaffirm its status as one of his most beloved songs.

Bowie performed the track live later in his career, including an electronic arrangement during 1995's Outside Tour (as featured on the live album Ouvrez Le Chien) and in an acoustic arrangement in 1996 for the recent Record Store Day release ChangesNowBowie.

The Metrobolist 50th anniversary artwork has been created by Mike Weller who was behind the originally intended album artwork. The gatefold sleeve also features many images from the infamous Keith MacMillan Mr Fish ‘dress’ shoot at Haddon Hall which would cause controversy when one of the shots was used on the cover of The Man Who Sold The World album in the rest of the world in spring of 1971.

For the 50th anniversary, the story of the gatefold sleeve can be told in full. As Mike Weller explains, “There is a story concealed in the carpet-scattered playing cards, David has thrown a plain 52 card deck in the air as though “casting the runes” but in a significant break from 60s Tarot divinations such as I Ching he casts runes using a four-suit pack and switches man-dress, along with the Court Card of the Future from right hand to left, signifying a new decade and new cultural era.” This theme is continued via one of the unused ‘dress’ photos which makes up the packshot for "The Man Who Sold The World" (2020 mix) single.

As with the Space Oddity 50th anniversary vinyl, as well as a 180g black vinyl edition, it will come in 2020 limited edition handwritten numbered copies on gold vinyl (# 1971 - 2020) and on white vinyl (# 1 - 1970) all randomly distributed.

Led Zeppelin III

Celebrates 50th Anniversary Today

Limited Edition Reissue Of “Immigrant Song” Japanese 7” Single

Available For Pre-Order This Thursday

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones released Led Zeppelin III 50 years ago today in the U.S., on October 5, 1970, with the U.K. and other countries following a few weeks later. The band’s third album in less than two years, it would top the charts in several countries – including the U.S. and the U.K. – on its way to selling more than 13 million copies worldwide. Beyond its overwhelming commercial success, the album also represented a turning point musically for Led Zeppelin as the group expanded its hard-hitting sound to embrace a wider range of styles on acoustic-based songs like “That’s The Way,” “Tangerine,” and “Bron-Y-Aur-Stomp.”

In celebration of the record’s 50th anniversary, the band will reissue the Japanese version of the album’s only single – “Immigrant Song” b/w the non-album track “Hey, Hey, What Can I Do” – on 7” vinyl. Limited to 19,700 copies, it comes in a sleeve that replicates the original artwork. The single will be released on January 15, 2021 and can be pre-ordered at www.ledzeppelin.com starting this Thursday at 10AM EST.

“Immigrant Song” was a Top 20 hit in the U.S. and has gone on to become one of the band’s most popular and enduring songs, currently ranking as their second most-streamed track worldwide. It’s also had an enduring impact on pop culture thanks to several memorable appearances in blockbuster motion pictures such as School Of Rock and, most recently, in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok.

“Immigrant Song” and its lyrical references to Norse mythology were inspired by the band’s concert in Reykjavik, Iceland on June 22, 1970. Six days later, the song made its live debut in England at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music. That fall, it would appear as the lead-off track on Led Zeppelin III.

Following the whirlwind success of the band’s first two albums and near constant touring, there was an initial rehearsal with Plant and Bonham where Page presented “Immigrant Song,” “Friends,” and what became “Out On The Tiles.” Page and Plant then took to the now famous Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Wales in 1970 to have a musical sabbatical. The remote 18th-century cottage – which lacked electricity and running water - became home to “That’s The Way.”

Page and Plant later convened with Bonham and Jones for rehearsals before recording began in earnest that May with engineer Andy Johns. The band recorded the album in several locations, including London’s Olympic Studios and Island Studios. Following the recording sessions, Page, who produced the album, took the mixed master tapes to Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, to make the cut for vinyl. Fueled by classic tracks such as “Since I’ve Been Loving You,, “Out On The Tiles,” and “Celebration Day,” Led Zeppelin III has been certified 6x platinum in the U.S. alone while also achieving multi-platinum status in many other countries.

Beyond the music, the album is noteworthy for another reason; it’s innovative artwork. When it was originally released on vinyl, Led Zeppelin III came packaged in a gatefold sleeve, conceived by Page and designed by multi-media artist Zacron (aka Richard Drew), whom Page had met in the early 1960s when Drew was attending Kingston College of Art. For his design, Zacron created a surreal collection of images (planes, birds and butterflies) surrounding several cutout holes. Behind the cover, he placed a rotating disc (volvelle or wheel chart) that featured more images, including photos of all four band members. When the disc was turned by hand, different images would appear in the openings to create an interactive visual experience.

With More Than Two Hours Of Unreleased Demos And Session Recordings

“The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast,” The Official Grateful Dead Podcast, Launches Season Two Today With Focus On American Beauty

First Episode “American Beauty 50: Box Of Rain” Available Today

LOS ANGELES – The musical distillers that recently uncorked Workingman’s Dead: The Angel’s Share have finished another batch of unreleased session recordings by the Grateful Dead. This time, the heavenly sonic elixir will toast the 50th anniversary of American Beauty with over two hours of unreleased studio outtakes, demos, and alternate mixes.

AMERICAN BEAUTY: THE ANGEL’S SHARE brings together never-before-heard studio recordings compiled from dozens of recently discovered 16-track reels. It includes multiple outtakes for several album tracks along with demos for every song on the album (except “Box Of Rain”) plus one for “To Lay Me Down,” which was later included on Jerry Garcia’s first solo album, Garcia. All 10 demos are available today for streaming and digital download with the full 56-track AMERICAN BEAUTY: THE ANGEL’S SHARE to be released as a digital exclusive on October 15, shortly before the 50th anniversary of the album’s original release date: November 1, 1970.

Like its predecessor, the latest incarnation of The Angel’s Share was made possible by the tireless work of engineer Brian Kehew and archivist Mike Johnson who – operating under the supervision of Grateful Dead legacy manager David Lemieux – spent countless hours compiling and piecing the reels together to create this revelatory experience.

AMERICAN BEAUTY: THE ANGEL’S SHARE opens with 10 demos that were recorded in August 1970 at Pacific High Recording Studio, the same place the band recorded Workingman’s Dead just a few months earlier. While fans are accustomed to hearing songs evolve through the band’s live recordings, this installment of The Angel’s Share offers them a rare opportunity to hear songs like “Ripple” (then titled “Hand Me Down”) grow from its first demo into the final version.

The vast remainder of The Angel’s Share features a mix of partial and complete takes from these sessions including multiple takes of “Friend Of The Devil,” “Ripple” and Pigpen’s “Operator,” an alternate mix of “Truckin’” and a different version of “Candyman.” These intimate in-studio performances are interspersed with conversations that make it feel like you’re in the studio with the band (Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and Bob Weir) along with producer Stephen Barncard and engineer Phil Sawyer.

The Angel’s Share is rounded out with an acoustic mix of “Box Of Rain” and a version of “Attics Of My Life” that spotlights Garcia alone on electric guitar, both newly mixed from the band’s recording sessions for the album later that summer at Wally Heider Recording.

As a reminder, the collection takes its name from a term used by whiskey distillers. The “angel’s share” is the percentage of whiskey that’s lost to evaporation each year as the liquid is aged in oak barrels. Much like the whiskey distillation process, there were also ingredients that were vital to the creation of American Beauty that were lost and did not end up on the final album, the band’s own version of the “angel’s share”. If not for good fortune, these recordings would have been lost to the angels as well, just like those gallons of whiskey. In this case, everyone gets a taste of the “angel’s share.”

To coincide with the latest Angel’s Share release, “The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast,” the official Grateful Dead podcast, has launched the first episode from its second season today. Produced and hosted by singer-songwriter and producer Rich Mahan and author and WFMU DJ Jesse Jarnow, the Deadcast’s sophomore season will focus exclusively on American Beauty with each weekly episode concentrating on one of the album’s 10 songs, kicking off today with “Box Of Rain,” which features a special appearance by director/writer Paul Feig (BridesmaidsGhostbusters), who prominently featured American Beauty in the legendary final episode of Freaks & Geeks.

Season two of “The Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast” will welcome American Beauty producer Barncard along with David Grisman, David Nelson, and many of the other musicians who contributed to the album, along with appearances by road manager Sam Cutler, writer Steve Silberman, Dead Head sociologist Rebecca Adams, New Yorker staff writer Nick Paumgarten, and many more.

The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” launched this summer and quickly became one of the most popular music podcasts, with multiple episodes from season one topping Apple Music’s Music Podcast Chart.

AMERICAN BEAUTY: THE ANGEL’S SHARE is a special gift to Dead fans and a fitting companion to the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of American Beauty, which will be released on October 30 as a 3-CD set and digitally. The collection is part of the band’s ongoing series of deluxe editions and features a newly remastered version of the album plus an unreleased show recorded on February 18, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre.
