LOS ANGELES – Grateful Dead earned the band’s first-ever gold record in 1971 with its self-titled live album. Known to many fans as “Skull & Roses” (a reference to the cover art by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse) the original double-LP included songs recorded in March and April 1971 in New York and, the band’s hometown, San Francisco. Grateful Dead celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with a newly remastered and expanded version of the original.

GRATEFUL DEAD (SKULL & ROSES): EXPANDED EDITION will be available as a two-CD set on June 25 for $24.98. It includes the album’s original’s 11 tracks, which have been remastered from the stereo analog master tapes by Grammy® Award winning engineer David Glasser using Plangent Process Speed Correction. The set also includes a bonus disc with 10 previously unreleased live tracks that were recorded on July 2, 1971 at the Fillmore West, which was the band’s final performance at the historic San Francisco venue. The music will also be available in both standard and high-resolution 192/24 audio at digital download and streaming services.

GRATEFUL DEAD (SKULL & ROSES) will also be released on June 25 as a double-LP set ($44.98) that features the newly remastered version of the original album pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. In addition, Dead.net will offer an exclusive version pressed on 180-gram, black and white propeller vinyl ($44.98) that is limited to 5,000 copies.

A previously unreleased performance of “The Other One” from the July 2, 1971 Fillmore West show is available today on streaming services.

“For the Grateful Dead's second live album, released two years after its predecessor Live/Dead, the band delivered an equally magnificent, but entirely different, Grateful Dead sound. Whereas Live/Dead was a perfect sonic encapsulation of the band at the peak of their Primal Dead era, Skull & Roses captures the quintessential quintet, the original five piece band, playing some of their hardest hitting rock 'n' roll (‘Johnny B. Goode,’ ‘Not Fade Away’), showing off their authentic Bakersfield bona fides (‘Me & My Uncle,’ ‘Mama Tried,’ ‘Me & Bobby McGee’), and some originals that would be important parts of the Dead's live repertoire for the next 24 years (‘Bertha,’ ‘Playing In The Band,’ ‘Wharf Rat’),” says David Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist, legacy manager, and the set’s producer. “Of course, the Dead were never defined by one specific ‘sound’ and amongst the aforementioned genres and styles the band brought to this album, they also delved deeply into their psychedelic, primal playbook with an entire side dedicated to their 1968 masterpiece ‘The Other One.’ This is one of the most deeply rich and satisfying tracks preserved on an official Grateful Dead album, up there with Live/Dead's ‘Dark Star’ and Europe '72's ‘Morning Dew.’ Skull & Roses sounds as fresh today as the first time I heard it in 1985, and as fresh as it was upon its spectacularly well-received release in 1971.”

After releasing the back-to-back classics Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty in 1970, the Dead were riding a hot streak when the group decided to hit the road in February 1971 to record its first live album since 1969’s Live/Dead. For the shows, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann were armed with a batch of new songs, including “Bertha,” “Playing In The Band,” and “Wharf Rat,” which would all appear on Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses). The original also mixed in classic covers (“Not Fade Away” and “Mama Tried”), a traditional (“Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad”), and an entire LP side dedicated to the epic jam vehicle, “The Other One.”

GRATEFUL DEAD (SKULL & ROSES): EXPANDED EDITION builds on the original with more than an hour of previously unreleased live recordings taken from the July 2, 1971 performance at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Standouts from new additions include a 17-minute version of “Good Lovin’” that captures Pigpen fully in control of the packed Fillmore West audience; and the aching beauty of the band’s version of Merle Haggard’s “Sing Me Back Home.” “The Other One” makes another appearance on the bonus disc. Recorded a few months after the one on the original album, this version is every bit its equal.

LOS ANGELES – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Déjà Vu was the most-anticipated new album in America in 1970. More than 50 years later, it’s one of the most famous albums in rock history with legendary songs, including “Carry On” and “Teach Your Children,” that still resonate today.

Rhino will honor the intense creative journey that led to this milestone album with an expansive 4-CD/1-LP collection that includes a pristine version of the original album on both 180-gram vinyl and CD, plus hours of rare and unreleased studio recordings that provide incredible insight into the making of the record. The previously unreleased demo for “Birds” that was recorded during the sessions is available today on all digital download and streaming services. Click HERE to listen now.

DÉJÀ VU: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available from Rhino on May 14 for $99.98. Presented in a 12 x 12 hardcover book, the collection comes illustrated with rarely seen photos from the era and annotated by writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe, whose revealing liner notes recount the making of the album through stories told by the people who were there, including David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young. On the same day, a deluxe vinyl version will also be available with the full content across 5 LPs of 180-gram vinyl. The deluxe vinyl version is available for pre-order now exclusively at CSNY50.com and Rhino.com for $249.98. The music will also be available on digital download and streaming services and in high-resolution audio at www.neilyoungarchives.com. Customers that purchase any version of the release at CSNY50.com or Rhino.com will receive a high-resolution download version as well.

A new line of CSNY Déjà Vu-themed, organic merch made from sustainably sourced materials is also available today exclusively at CSNY50.com and Rhino.com.

Crowe recalls in the liner notes that “Déjà Vu caught the zeitgeist perfectly" and “might just be the legendary band’s most accurate portrait of their fiery individualism.” Of this new Deluxe Edition, Crowe opines: “50 years later, with the sonic aperture fully opened, it’s a wide-screen look at the big picture of Déjà Vu, with more music, including a batch of surprises, unseen photos, and a lot more clarity."

On the new anniversary edition, the album’s original 10 tracks are joined by 38 more to add nearly two-and-a-half hours of music that includes demos, outtakes, and alternate takes – most of which are previously unreleased. Among them is “Know You Got To Run,” the first song the quartet recorded during its first session on July 15 at the house Stills was renting from Peter Tork in Studio City.

Other unreleased highlights include the demo for Crosby’s “Almost Cut My Hair”; Stills’ outtake for “Bluebird Revisited”; and Young’s alternate version of “Helpless” featuring harmonica. Also making its debut on the set is a delightful version of “Our House” that features Nash singing with the song’s inspiration, Joni Mitchell.

MUSIC INSPIRED BY BIGGIE: I GOT A STORY TO TELL

14-Track Digital Album Mixes Songs From The New Netflix Documentary About Biggie’s Life With Key Tracks From His Iconic Career And Is Available Now From Rhino

The Documentary Releases March 1 On Netflix

LOS ANGELES – Christopher Wallace, aka The Notorious B.I.G., lived up to his stage name, leaving behind a legacy that still looms large over the hip-hop industry decades after his death. On Monday, March 1, Netflix will release Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell, a new documentary that celebrates his life through rare footage and in-depth interviews with his family and closest friends.

Rhino will join the celebration with a new digital collection that spotlights the distinctive flow and lyrical storytelling that helped fuel Biggie’s rise to become a hip-hop icon. Available now for download ($9.99) and streaming, the 14-tracks include Grammy®-nominated hits like “Big Poppa,” “Hypnotize,” and “Mo Money Mo Problems.”

During his short but influential career, Biggie inspired legions of fans around the world while earning critical acclaim with his two studio albums, Ready to Die (1994) and Life After Death (1997), which were certified six-times platinum and diamond, respectively. Those albums elevated him to hip-hop royalty with tracks like “Juicy,” “Gimme The Loot,” and “I Got A Story To Tell,” which are all featured in the new documentary.

The collection also has music not featured in the documentary, including selections from the posthumous albums released after Biggie’s 1997 murder, including “Notorious B.I.G.” and “Dead Wrong” from Born Again (1999) and “Nasty Girl” from Duets: The Final Chapter (2005).

Made in collaboration with Biggie’s estate, Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell is an intimate rendering of a man whose rapid ascent and tragic end has been at the center of rap lore for more than twenty years. Directed by Emmett Malloy, this intimate documentary features rare footage filmed by his best friend Damion “D-Roc” Butler and new interviews with his closest friends and family, revealing a side of Christopher Wallace that the world never knew. The film features interviews with Voletta Wallace, mother of The Notorious B.I.G., and Sean “Diddy” Combs who also serve as executive producers of the documentary.

Wallace said: “This will be the first documentary to focus on the experiences of my son’s life and the art of his music rather than the circumstances of his death. It is a celebration of who he was and where he came from. It shows the sort of in-depth storytelling that Christopher loved. This is how he would have wanted to be remembered.”

Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell is produced by David Koh, Wayne Barrow, William Green, Aaron L. Ginsburg, Terry Leonard, Daniel Pappas and executive produced by Sean Combs, Voletta Wallace, Mark Pitts, Stanley Buchthal, and Emmett and Brendan Malloy.
