RIDING A WAVE OF SOUL

Soul Surfer Soundtrack Includes a Selection Of Uplifting Music From
Inspiring Biopic On Bethany Hamilton

Available April 5 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES – Soul Surfer is the inspiring true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion. The film’s cast includes AnnaSophia Robb, Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid, with Carrie Underwood in her film debut. Soul Surfer will go out as a wide release via TriStar Pictures with a broad-based and integrated marketing campaign managed by FilmDistrict.

On Halloween morning 2003, Bethany was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark, which bit off her left arm and seemed to end her career as a rising surf star. After losing more than 60% of her blood and undergoing several surgeries, Bethany began her recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude. Miraculously, just one month after the attack, Bethany returned to the water. Two months later, Bethany placed fifth in the Open Women's division surf competition and just over a year after the attack she won her first National Title.

“Bethany’s story is so powerful,” says director McNamara. “Most people would have given up after what happened to her, but not only did she make an amazing return to surfing, she excelled at it, and has turned her life into an inspiration for people all around the world.”

Rhino will release SOUL SURFER: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE on April 5, just days before the film’s debut. The soundtrack will be available for download at all digital retailers for $7.99 and on CD at Amazon.com and select indie retail stores for a suggested list price of $9.99.

The heartfelt collection features an eclectic array of musical styles that range from James “Bla” Pahinui’s Hawaiian slack-key guitar (“Ho’oheno Keia No Beauty”) and Brian Setzer’s ripping surf rock (“Go Go Godzilla”) to Britt Nicole’s inspirational pop (“Like A Star” and “Set The World On Fire”) and Two Door Cinema Club’s indie rock (“This Is The Life”). Also featured is music by: Michael Franti & Spearhead, Francesca Battistelli and Athlete.

SOUL SURFER: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE also includes two new recordings available exclusively on this compilation. The first is “Runaway” by Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mat Kearney. Although the track was not composed for the film, Kearney did arrange the track specifically for a key scene. The other new recording is a cover of the smash hit song “Firework” performed by Chris Sligh, who was an American Idol finalist during the 2007 season.

THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED SOUNDTRACK
BRINGS OUT UNHEARD DEAD

Soundtrack To Essential Pictures’ Film Features Six Grateful Dead Songs
Including Three Previously Unreleased Live Recordings

Digital Release Available Now, CD Arrives March 29

LOS ANGELES – Essential Pictures presents The Music Never Stopped, a drama directed by Jim Kohlberg that is based on Dr. Oliver Sacks’ case study, “The Last Hippie.” Set in the mid-1980s, the film chronicles the struggles of a father (J. K. Simmons) trying to re-connect with his estranged son (Lou Taylor Pucci), who is recovering from brain surgery that has left him unable to create any long-term memories, effectively stranding him in 1968.

Through the music that embodied the generation gap of the 1960s – particularly Grateful Dead – the father forms a most unusual but emotionally vibrant bond with the son he thought he had lost. Indeed, music plays a vital role in the film, which features songs by Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Steppenwolf, Donovan and the Dead, who wrote the song for which the film is named.

Prior to the film’s theatrical release, THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED – MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE is available now from Rhino at all digital retailers for a suggested list price of $11.99. The collection will also be available on CD on March 29 at Amazon.com and select indie retail stores for a suggested list price of $13.98. The film opens in limited release on March 18. Please visit www.themusicneverstopped-movie.com for more info and access to select advance screenings.

A pivotal moment in the film features the father and son share a bonding moment while attending a Grateful Dead concert in the ’80s. Previously unreleased live performances of “Truckin’” (Noblesville, IN, 7/15/89) and “Touch of Grey” (East Rutherford, NJ, 10/14/89) can be heard playing during the scene. Both are included on the soundtrack, along with a previously unreleased live version of “Sugar Magnolia” recorded on February 24, 1971 in Port Chester, NY. In addition to the three unreleased tracks, a trio of classic Dead recordings also appear on the soundtrack: “Ripple,” “Uncle John’s Band,” and the live version of “Not Fade Away/Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” from their eponymous live album, better known as Skull & Roses.

The soundtrack also features a new track from The Tulips, a musical group formed first as friends, then to perform "Summer Song" for the film. The song was written by Kraig Jarret Johnson, sung by Chrissy Amphlett, accompanied by Charley Drayton, Kraig Jarret Johnson and Greg Wieczorek and produced by Charley Drayton. More will be blooming from The Tulips as they continue to write and record.

“Music is such an integral character,” director Jim Kohlberg says of the film. “We were able to put together this incredible soundtrack with a great deal of detail, patience and luck. I wasn’t going to do the film unless we could get the music...”

Ethereal Rock Choir Scala & Kolacny Brothers Escalate US Breakthrough With Debut Album, Tour

Winning over the hearts of critics at the LA Times, NPR, USA Today, Billboard, MTV.com, AOL Spinner and Stereogum, all-female Belgian rock choir sensations Scala & Kolacny Brothers continue their US breakthrough with the release of their full length self-titled debut and a North American tour this spring. The album, out March 15 on ATCO, features imaginative reinterpretations of songs from Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and others, as well as the three haunting original compositions by Scala & Kolacny Brothers.

After a performance at SXSW, Scala & Kolacny Brothers will kick of their North American tour April 7 in Vancouver, BC. The group will hit major cities across the US and Canada, playing renowned rock venues, such as New York's Webster Hall and Los Angeles' El Rey Theater, while also debuting at Coachella on April 15.

Led by pianist/composer Steven Kolacny and his brother, conductor Stijn Kolacny, Scala & Kolacny Brothers "brilliantly haunting" (EW) version of Radiohead's “Creep” underscored the trailer for 'The Social Network’ to great acclaim (viewed by 4-million-plus on YouTube alone), and the group has continued to build buzz and fans stateside ever since. The LA Times praises their “sweet songbird attack,” and USA Today raves that their takes on rock classics "Creep" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit” are "even more haunting than the originals.”

The First 3,000 Orders Will Receive A Personalized Copy

Individually Numbered, Limited Edition Collection

LOS ANGELES – Grateful Dead slipped the shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-show run spawned Europe ’72, a live triple album that remains one of the band’s best-selling and most beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour with EUROPE ’72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS—an individually numbered, limited edition collection that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the Grateful Dead’s greatest tour.

EUROPE ’72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones prevalently used at the time. Along with the music, a vast majority of which is previously unreleased, the travel chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and Steve Silberman.

Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is mixing each show from the original 16-track recordings, with the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools used to bring the master tapes back to life. Two-time Grammy®-winning engineer David Glasser is mastering the music to HDCD specs. While many of the recordings heard on Europe ’72 were sweetened in the studio after the tour, those tracks will be included in this collection without overdubs, where possible.

Due to ship in September, the boxed set is available exclusively from Dead.net, which will take orders beginning on January 19. The price of the collection is $450, which works out to the remarkably low price of about $20 for each show, or roughly the cost of a transatlantic flight from New York City to London in 1972 (price of time machine not included).

EUROPE ’72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS will truly be a labor of love and might “need a miracle” to happen. Due to the manufacturing costs of this ambitious project, if 3,000 orders are not received by April 1, the collection will unfortunately be cancelled. This isn’t a gun-to-your-head sales pitch but is simply the reality behind making an ambitious release of this magnitude happen.

As a thank you to all the Dead Heads who help make this collection happen, the first 3,000 fans to order will have their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1, Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Orders will no longer be taken at some date (to be determined) later in the summer. Once the order window ends, this collection will never be available for sale again and will be manufactured specifically to total orders, up to 7,200 maximum. Additionally, to reward those loyal fans who have to wait until September to get their bounty, Dead.net will periodically provide exclusive content (music, photos, and more) in the coming months to all those who have placed an order.

While its sheer size is formidable, what makes EUROPE ’72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS such a landmark set is that it captures a defining moment in Grateful Dead history filled with its share of firsts and lasts.

The tour offers a snapshot of a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums—Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band.

There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble On Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” and “Not Fade Away”—and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers—the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One,” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight,” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.”
