Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast Launches Season 9 Tomorrow, Focusing on From The Mars Hotel & Story Behind The Grateful Dead’s Famed Wall of Sound

50 years ago, the Grateful Dead were cooking with gas. It was spring 1974, the band had successfully emerged from a series of hectic, harrowing times, and would soon follow their transformative Wake Of The Flood with the second acclaimed album release on their very own Grateful Dead Records: From The Mars Hotel. During the mere eight months that had passed between those two beloved LPs, the group also played some of their most exploratory live music and largest venues to date, famously amplified by the homemade, 75-ton Wall of Sound that they debuted on March 23rd, 1974, at their hometown Cow Palace in Daly City, CA. Eternal staples such as “Scarlet Begonias,” “Ship Of Fools” and “U.S. Blues” would first be introduced into setlists along that season’s tour, before the Grateful Dead spent two months recording and honing them in the studio for From The Mars Hotel. Not to mention perennial classics like “China Doll” and “Loose Lucy,” or “Pride of Cucamonga” and “Unbroken Chain” – the final two tracks Phil Lesh would sing on a Grateful Dead studio album. Now, as Grateful Dead members and tributaries continue to celebrate and bring so many of these formative songs to the masses, From The Mars Hotel has been remastered and expanded with newly unearthed material and rarities, in honor of its 50th Anniversary.

Out June 21st via Rhino, six days before the album’s original release on June 27, 1974, From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) features remastered audio by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer David Glaser, with Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction. Produced for release by Grateful Dead Legacy Manager and Audio Archivist, David Lemieux, the deluxe edition also includes demos of “China Doll” and “Wave That Flag” – the song that became “U.S. Blues” – as well as a previously unreleased live performance of the Grateful Dead at University of Nevada-Reno on 5/12/1974. As the band filled an outdoor football stadium with epic highs like a huge “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” Mars Hotel cuts including “U.S. Blues” and classics such as “Brown-Eyed Women,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Mississippi Half-Step,” “Truckin'” and “Sugar Magnolia,” a massive wind storm was no match for the Wall of Sound. Designed to improve the listening and performance experience at what were becoming larger gigs and longer, more dynamic and varied sets, the Wall of Sound required 21 stage hands, and underlined the resounding effect the Grateful Dead were having on American audiences and culture at the time, even as the entire operation remained homespun and humble.

In addition to the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Remaster) will be released on June 21st as a single 180-gram black vinyl LP, limited edition Neon Pink vinyl, limited edition “Ugly Rumors” custom vinyl exclusive to Dead.net, and a specially-designed picture disc created in partnership with zoetrope pioneer Drew Tetz. When viewed with a camera or strobe, the zoetrope LP will appear to animate, and can be pre-ordered along with the rest of From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Remaster) variants.

Recorded in San Francisco’s Coast Recorders studio, From The Mars Hotel finds Keith Godchaux particularly shining across a variety of keys, from the “China Doll” harpsichord to the pounding piano on Bob Weir’s “Money Money,” to the churchy organ that elevates “Ship Of Fools.” Lyricist Robert Hunter packs “U.S. Blues” with a barrage of imagery, pop-culture references and sardonic asides – as Canadian author Ray Robertson writes in the 50th Anniversary Edition’s liner notes, it “carries an undeniable whiff of late-capitalism ennui…it’s the most fun you’ll ever have dancing to the end of the American Empire.” Jerry Garcia’s jaunty lead guitar drives bouncing melodies across the LP, while guests include Ned Lagin’s unnerving synth effects on “Unbroken Chain,” Clover member John McFee’s country-rock pedal steel on “Pride Of Cucamonga,” and more.

From The Mars Hotel peaked at #16 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1974, contributing to the Grateful Dead’s historic achievement last month, when they broke the all-time record for Most Top 40 albums on the Billboard 200

In tandem with today's announcement, the Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast will premiere its ninth season tomorrow, March 28th. Following 5 million downloads and counting, the official Grateful Dead podcast will now unlock the many secrets of From The Mars Hotel. Along with a track-by-track breakdown of the album, this season will tell the story of the game-changing Wall of Sound, with archival audio of its mastermind – legendary LSD chemist Owsley Stanley – and new interviews with those who made the larger-than-life speaker system a reality.

About the Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead is a social and musical phenomenon that grew into a genuine American treasure. In 1965, an entire generation was linked together by common ideals, gathering by the hundreds and thousands. This movement created a seamless connection between the band and its fans. As the band toured, Dead Heads would follow. Not because it was a part of popular culture but because it is a true counterculture that exists to this very day-one that earnestly believes in the value of its beliefs. By 1995, the Grateful Dead had attracted the most concertgoers in the history of the music business, and today remains one of the all-time leaders in concert ticket sales. Eventually, the caravan evolved into a community with various artists, craftsmen and entrepreneurs supplying a growing demand for merchandise that connected them to the music. Today, the connection is as strong as ever. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Their final tally of 2,318 total concerts remains a world record. The Grateful Dead recently celebrated their 59th Top 40 album on the Billboard chart, a feat no other group has achieved.

Celebrating the Album’s 40th Anniversary

Reissued on Black & Crystal Clear Vinyl with 2018 Remastered Audio

Releasing May 24

LOS ANGELES — Pretenders’ Learning To Crawl will be reissued on crystal clear and standard black vinyl on May 24

Celebrating the album's 40th anniversary, this reissue is true to the original 1984 release, with the artwork and tracklisting remaining the same. This pressing of Learning To Crawl features the 2018 remastered audio by the album’s original producer, Chris Thomas, on vinyl for the first time.

Learning To Crawl is the Pretenders’ third album, released after a band hiatus which saw in this time the sad passing of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon before recording started. It sees an assortment of guitar and bass players on the record before Robbie McIntosh and Malcolm Foster joined Chrissie Hynde and Martin Chambers, making the band a four-piece.

The 1984 album was certified Gold and Platinum in the UK and US, respectively and reached No.11 on the UK Albums chart and No.5 on Billboard 200, featuring some of their most loved songs, including “2000 Miles,” “Back on the Chain Gang” both singles securing spots in the UK Top 20 Singles chart.

ANNO DOMINI 1989-1995

First Boxed Set Celebrating Singer Tony Martin Era

Remastered Versions Of Headless Cross, Tyr, And Cross Purposes, Plus A New Mix Of Forbidden By Legendary Guitarist Tony Iommi

4-LP And 4-CD Versions Available On May 31

LOS ANGELES – Black Sabbath’s history with singers Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio has been chronicled extensively through the years in multiple collections. Until now, no boxed set has focused on Black Sabbath’s time with Tony Martin, the band’s second-longest-serving singer.

Rhino explores this prolific period from the godfathers of heavy metal in a new collection that brings four albums back into print after an extended absence. ANNO DOMINI 1989-1995 will be available from Rhino on May 31 in 4-LP and 4-CD configurations. The set contains newly remastered versions of Headless Cross (1989), Tyr (1990), and Cross Purposes (1994), plus a new version of Forbidden (1995) that guitarist Tony Iommi remixed specially for the collection.

Several albums make their vinyl debut in the LP version of ANNO DOMINI, while the CD version contains three exclusive bonus tracks: the B-side “Cloak & Dagger” and the Japan-only releases “What’s The Use” and “Loser Gets It All.” A booklet comes with the set featuring photos, artwork, and liner notes by Hugh Gilmour. The collection also contains a Headless Cross poster and a replica concert book from the “Headless Cross Tour.”

ANNO DOMINI picks up Black Sabbath’s story in 1989, two decades and multiple lineup changes into the band’s groundbreaking career as metal originators. At the time, membership had solidified around riffmaster and founding member Tony Iommi, legendary drummer Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Whitesnake), singer Tony Martin, and longtime Black Sabbath collaborator and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls (Quartz, Bandy Legs).

The group originally released Headless Cross in 1989 on I.R.S. Records, the first of four albums Sabbath recorded for the label. Praised by fans and critics alike, the band’s 14th studio release produced three singles: “Devil And Daughter,” “Call Of The Wild,” and the title track. Bassist Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Gary Moore) joined for the “Headless Cross Tour” and stayed to record Sabbath’s next album, 1990’s Tyr. Named for the Norse god of war, the album explores similar mythological themes in songs like “The Battle Of Tyr” and “Valhalla.” On “The Sabbath Stones,” the band channels Old Testament fire and brimstone into a classic bruiser.

In 1992, following a successful world tour, this incarnation of Black Sabbath was put on hold when the band reunited temporarily with Ronnie James Dio. Two years later, Martin and Nicholls were back in the studio with Iommi to record 1994’s Cross Purposes. The band was completed with the addition of founding Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bobby Rondinelli of Rainbow.

The Tyr-era Black Sabbath lineup reunited in 1995 when Powell and Murray returned to record Forbidden. It was the band’s 18th studio album, and its last for nearly 20 years. (In 2013, Iommi, Osbourne and Butler released Black Sabbath’s final studio album, 13.) Forbidden, produced by Ernie C of Body Count, the hard rock band fronted by rapper/actor/Sabbath fan Ice-T, who appears on the song “Illusion Of Power.” Since its release, sonically improving the album has been one of Iommi’s pet projects.

He explains, “I was never happy with the guitar sound, and Cozy was definitely never happy with the drum sound… So, I thought it would be nice to do it for him in a way.” He adds, “I just felt that, without changing any of the songs, there was an opportunity to go back and bring out some of the sounds and make it more what people would expect Sabbath to sound like.”

"Ziggy Stardust (Demo)" Available Now To Stream and Download

LOS ANGELES - Parlophone Records proudly announces David Bowie’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Star!, a 5CD/Blu-Ray Audio set that explores Bowie’s journey from February 1971 through the creation of the Ziggy Stardust character, the recording of the iconic The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album, and captures the international mania that surrounded the Ziggy phenomenon in the form of UK radio sessions and TV performances, as well as live tracks from Ziggy and the Spiders’ October 1, 1972 show at the Boston Music Hall.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Star!, containing 29 unreleased tracks, covers early songwriting demos, recordings from Bowie’s band, The Arnold Corns, rehearsals at Bowie’s then-home, Haddon Hall, BBC sessions, singles, live performances, plus outtakes and alternative versions from the original album recording sessions, which have been newly mixed by original album producer, Ken Scott.

Unreleased highlights include an alternative version of “Lady Stardust,” an unheard version of the deep-cut classic “Shadow Man,” and an up-tempo take of The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” which he would later slow down and cover for the Pin-Ups album.

The audio-only Blu-Ray disc features the definitive 2012 remaster of the original Ziggy Stardust album in 96kHz/24bit PCM stereo, plus the album and additional mixes from 2003 in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 as well as the singles, outtakes and alternative versions in 96kHz/24-bit PCM stereo.

The Blu-Ray also includes a version of the Ziggy Stardust album called Waiting In The Sky (Before The Starman Came To Earth) taken from Trident Studio tapes dated December 15, 1971, which features an alternative running order and four songs that didn’t make the final album. This will also be available as a limited LP on April 20 for Record Store Day. In addition, there is a 1-LP version of Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! compiling the alternative takes and mixes.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! also contains two books. The first is an extensive 112-page book with detailed liner notes, memorabilia, contemporary reviews and articles, rare photographs from Barrie Wentzel, Michael Putland, Mick Rock, Sukita and Alec Byrne, as well as brand-new notes and interviews with Ken Scott, Mark Carr Pritchett and Bowie’s plugger from the time, Anya Wilson. Accompanying the main book is a 36-page compiled reproduction of Bowie’s personal Ziggy Stardust-era notebooks.

The first track from Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! is “Ziggy Stardust (demo),” in which Bowie recorded vocals and acoustic guitar in March 1971 at Haddon Hall in Beckenham.

Turn It On Again: The Hits

The album’s vinyl debut 2-LP, special edition on “Invisible Touch” clear vinyl and CD versions on May 3

LOS ANGELES- To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its original release in October 1999, Genesis’ multi-platinum-selling Turn It On Again: The Hits is being made available on vinyl for the first time.

Releasing on May 3, it will come as a 2-LP set on black vinyl, a special edition 2-LP set in “Invisible Touch” clear vinyl as well as on CD. The album contains 18 tracks that span the band's whole career. From their earliest period with tracks such as “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)” and a version of “The Carpet Crawlers” on to their early 80’s global smash hits such as “Turn It On Again” and “Mama” and their massive hits later that decade and into the early 90s with “Invisible Touch” and “I Can't Dance.”

The album's artwork remains loyal to the original, with the lettering of GENESIS pulled from various album covers of the band and the infamous ‘I Can’t Dance’ silhouette of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford taken from the song's video.

For more than a half-century, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Genesis have defied the odds, rising to become one of the world’s best-selling bands amid personnel shake-ups, shifting styles, and changing times. Formed in 1967 by four classmates in Surrey, England (vocalist Peter Gabriel, keyboardist Tony Banks, lead guitarist Anthony Phillips, and bassist/rhythm guitarist Mike Rutherford), Genesis established themselves as one of prog-rock’s most innovative acts. The band developed their sound with 1970’s Trespass and solidified their line-up with drummer/backing vocalist Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett, going on to release critically acclaimed albums like Selling England by the Pound (1973), and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). With the departure of Gabriel in 1975, drummer Phil Collins took over as frontman, leading the group into an era of unprecedented success, beginning with 1976’s A Trick of the Tail and Wind & the Wuthering. By the turn of the decade, Genesis had transformed into a tightly-knit trio, embracing a pop aesthetic with the albums …And Then There Were Three…(1978) and Duke (1980), as well as in hits like “Follow You Follow Me” and “Misunderstanding.”

The ‘80s found each band member embarking on successful solo careers – a fact that only solidified their collective songwriting prowess. With their expansive, synth-based hooks and reverb-heavy drums, Genesis set the tone for the decade, dominating global charts with Abacab (1981), Genesis (1983), and Invisible Touch (1986) and conquering the Billboard charts with a string of hits, including “That’s All,” “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight,” “Land of Confusion” and the US No.1, “Invisible Touch.” In 1991, We Can’t Dance (featuring “No Son of Mine,” “Hold on My Heart,” and the GRAMMY®-nominated “I Can’t Dance”) marked Collins’ final studio album with the band. While Banks and Rutherford announced the band’s retirement from the stage and studio in 2000, all three members continued to reunite sporadically – most recently for 2021’s The Last Domino? Tour.

Today, Genesis’ generation-spanning catalog includes 15 studio albums, six live LPs, and dozens of charting singles. In addition to their 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band has received a coveted Ivor Novello Award, a GRAMMY®, an American Music Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at Britain’s Progressive Music Awards.
