The B-52's Will Tour Europe And The U.S. This Summer

LOS ANGELES - The B-52's soared in 1989, propelled by the band's first Top 10 hits "Love Shack" and "Roam." They were breakthrough singles from the Athens, Georgia-based group's fifth studio release, Cosmic Thing. That record reached #3 on the Billboard Album Chart, sold more than four million copies in the U.S., and burnished the B-52's reputation as the World's Greatest Party Band.

It will be the 30th anniversary of Cosmic Thing this summer and the B-52's are taking the party on the road with an extensive tour of Europe and the U.S. (see below for dates). Also, Rhino will introduce an anniversary edition of the album that features newly remastered sound, B-sides, remixes and unreleased concert recordings from the 1990's Cosmic Tour.

On June 28 - one day after the album's official 30th anniversary - Rhino will release COSMIC THING: 30th ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION. Available for $24.98, the two-disc set is accompanied by a booklet that includes liner notes from journalist and author T. Cole Rachel, song lyrics, and unseen photos of the band from that time period. The music will be available on the same day through digital download and streaming services.

The COSMIC THING anniversary edition opens with a newly remastered version of the original album, which was recorded by Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Keith Strickland, and co-produced by Nile Rodgers and Don Was. Along with the original album, the two-disc set also includes five newly remastered bonus tracks that spotlight B-sides and remixes like "B-52's Megamix" and "Roam" (Extended Remix).

The collection's second disc is an unreleased live album that captures the B-52's performing live in Texas in August 1990 during the band's Cosmic Tour. The performance includes seven songs from Cosmic Thing along with several other B-52's classics such as "Rock Lobster" and "Dance This Mess Around" from the group's 1979 self-titled debut; and "Private Idaho" and "Give Me Back My Man" from 1980's Wild Planet.

All songs were recorded during the band's August 4 show at The Pavillion in The Woodlands, Texas except for "Whammy Kiss," which was recorded the previous night during the band's show in Dallas.

DAVID BOWIE
SPACE ODDITY 50th ANNIVERSARY 2 x 7" BOXED SET
FEATURING BRAND NEW TONY VISCONTI MIXES

SPACE ODDITY (2019 MIX - SINGLE EDIT) 1 TRACK DIGITAL SINGLE)

BOTH SET FOR RELEASE ON PARLOPHONE JULY 12

As part of the ongoing celebrations marking 50 years since David Bowie’s first hit, and following the recent Spying Through A Keyhole, Clareville Grove Demos, and The “Mercury" Demos’ collections, Parlophone is releasing a very special double 7” single of “Space Oddity” featuring brand new mixes by Tony Visconti. The vinyl set and a one-track digital release of the single edit of the 2019 mix of “Space Oddity” for streaming and download will be released by Parlophone on July 12, the day after the original single’s 50th anniversary.

The “Space Oddity” 50th anniversary double 7” set will come in a boxed set including a double-sided poster featuring an original “Space Oddity” print advertisement and a Ray Stevenson shot of Bowie taken on stage at the “Save Rave ‘69” concert at the London Palladium on November 30, 1969, the backdrop featuring a N.A.S.A. astronaut. The set also includes an information card and a print featuring an alternative shot by Jojanneke Claassen from the “Space Oddity” promo single cover session.

The cover of the original mono single is the rare U.K. promotional picture sleeve which, along with the label, features the original Philips trademark specifically cleared for this 50th anniversary release. The single itself has been cut from the original analog single master tapeThe jacket housing the 2019 mixes by Tony Visconti is a new design featuring an alternative Ray Stevenson shot from the “Save Rave ‘69” concert to that on the poster.

First released as a 7-inch single on July 11, 1969, “Space Oddity” was also the opening track of David Bowie’s self-titled second studio album David Bowie. Initially inspired by Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the song gained a huge popularity when it was adopted as the unofficial theme of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission that launched five days after the single’s release.

Over the past 50 years, “Space Oddity” has been on a journey as endless as that of its main character Major Tom. Originally written and demoed in November 1968, the song has gone through many guises from appearing in the television film special Love You Til Tuesday in an earlier recorded incarnation with John “Hutch” Hutchinson, to being recorded in Italian ("Ragazzo solo, Ragazza sola”), winning an Ivor Novello Special Award for Originality in May 1970. The song was Bowie’s first hit on both sides of the Atlantic: #5 in the U.K. in 1969, #1 in the U.K. in 1975, and #15 in the U.S. in 1973. In 2013, it became the first music video shot in space when it was performed by Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield, while aboard the International Space Station. Major Tom continued to be a motif for Bowie throughout his career, revisiting the character in the songs “Ashes to Ashes,” “Hallo Spaceboy,” and in the music video for "”.

Further news of moments and events celebrating the anniversary of this very special song will follow.

10-CD, 3-CD And 5-LP Versions Will Also Be Available On June 28

LOS ANGELES - This summer will be the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, the defining event of a generation and one of the most iconic moments in popular music history. Despite its enduring cultural significance, no one has ever attempted to document the historic festival as it unfolded in real time. That is precisely what producers Andy Zax and Steve Woolard have done with a new 38-disc, 432-track boxed set that includes a near complete reconstruction of Woodstock across nearly 36 hours, with every artist performance from the festival included in chronological order. The collection boasts 267 previously unreleased audio tracks, totaling nearly 20 hours.

Limited to 1,969 individually numbered copies, WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN - THE DEFINITIVE 50TH ANNIVERSARY ARCHIVE comes in a screen-printed plywood box with canvas insert inspired by the Woodstock stage set up, designed by Grammy®-winning graphic designer Masaki Koike. The set also includes a Blu-ray copy of the Woodstock film, a replica of the original program, a guitar strap, two Woodstock posters, a reprint of a diary written by an attendee during the festival, two 8x10 prints from legendary rock photographer Henry Diltz, and essays by Zax, acclaimed music scribe Jesse Jarnow, and trailblazing rock critic Ellen Sander. Also included is a copy of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music (Reel Art Press), a comprehensive new hardbound book about the event written by Michael Lang, one of the festival's co-creators. The collection will be available on August 2 for $799.98. Pre-orders are available now at www.rhino.com/woodstock50, bundled with four exclusive 18x15 lithographs by Dale Saltzman, based on banners that were onsite at the original festival.

Rhino also will release two other collections earlier in the summer on June 28. WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN - 50TH ANNIVERSARY EXPERIENCE features 162 tracks across 10 CDs and is the first Woodstock collection to feature live recordings of every performer at the festival ($149.98). WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN - 50TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION includes 42 tracks and will be available as both 3-CD ($34.98) and 5-LP ($129.98) sets. The 10-disc version will also be available via digital download.

Between August 15-18, 1969, more than 400,000 people converged on Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm in upstate New York for Woodstock. Thirty-two acts performed including some of the most popular and influential musicians of the era such as Joan Baez, The Band, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Who.

The concert spawned Michael Wadleigh's Oscar®-winning documentary as well as a pair of soundtrack albums. Together, the film and records have created a popular mythology surrounding Woodstock, one that only paints a partial picture of what actually happened. BACK TO THE GARDEN, producer Andy Zax writes in the liner notes, is intended to let people hear the festival as it really happened.

"Wadleigh's film tells a story of Woodstock, but it doesn't tell the story...This 50th anniversary archive - which presents nearly all of the audio from the festival in something approximating real time - tells a different kind of story. If Wadleigh's film is a kind of psychedelic Busby Berkeley musical, Back To The Garden is an audio-verité documentary...All of the mythology of Woodstock is here in this box; or at least, everything that would eventually create that mythology. The reality is here, too. And neither invalidates the other."

The time-consuming challenge of reconstructing the concert audio began with locating the more than 60 multi-track reels recorded by Eddie Kramer and Lee Osborne, as well as the 100 or so soundboard reels recorded by the onstage crew. Sorting through those tapes - some of which had been edited, mislabeled or lost - and then reassembling them properly was a process that, in some cases, took years to complete.

Zax says he, sound producer Brian Kehew and mastering engineer Dave Schultz avoided interfering with the tapes as much as possible in order to preserve their authenticity. "It's not surprising that other producers' first reaction to these tapes over the years has been 'uh-oh,' immediately followed by 'we've gotta find a way to fix this.' I'm not unsympathetic to that approach, but if there's a single overriding lesson that Brian Kehew and I have learned since we began working with the Woodstock tapes in 2005, it's this: you can't fix them... That's less grim than it seems, because once you've accepted the idea that there is no way to make these recordings sound slick, you realize that these tapes are the sonic equivalent of heirloom tomatoes - slightly imperfect, but delicious."

In some cases, however, they needed to take advantage of new technology to perform much-needed restorations that would not have been possible just a few years ago. Zax says: "The only surviving recording of Ravi Shankar's Woodstock performance...is a mono reel with less than optimal sound. But the breakthrough de-mixing process developed by James Clarke at Abbey Road Studios allowed us to isolate and extract the parts played by each instrument and then create a new stereo mix. Similarly, recent improvements in polyphonic tuning have allowed us to repair previously unfixable horn parts in the Blood, Sweat & Tears performance, allowing it, for the first time, to be heard as originally intended."

But the Woodstock audio isn't solely about music: it's also about the people who were there. Fortunately, the microphones were left on throughout the festival, capturing everything from stagehands discussing lunch and audience members shouting requests for baseball scores, to Max Yasgur's uplifting address to the audience gathered on his farm.

You can also hear the cavalcade of stage announcements made by stage manager John Morris and lighting director Chip Monck, who were drafted as emcees for the festival because no one hired one. On all three of these new anniversary collections, you can hear them between songs making announcements about everything from lost keys to warnings about "flat blue acid." The final disc in the 38-disc box serves as an appendix and contains ancillary recordings and a few bits of audio whose placement within the sequence could not be confirmed.

As the cliché goes: If you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there. BACK TO THE GARDEN provides a way for people who weren't there to remember them. And for anyone who was there, perhaps this will jog their memory.

ZZ Top 50th Anniversary North American Kicks Off With "Texas Bash" Dates Later This Month And Continues This August

LOS ANGELES - ZZ Top are celebrating 50 years of beards, blues, hot cars, and fuzzy guitars this year with a new, Texas-sized compilation that includes the 50 songs that helped transform "that little ol' band from Texas" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame standard bearers they have become in the 21st century.

On August 16, Warner Bros. Records will release GOIN' 50 as both 3-CD ($29.98) and 180-gram, 5-LP ($99.98) sets. A single-CD version with 18 tracks as well as digital and streaming versions will also be available on June 14.

ZZ Top will kick off their 50th Anniversary with a trio of "Texas Bash" dates later this month in Dallas, Houston, and Austin, with a full North American tour launching August 16. Full itinerary is listed below and tickets are on sale now. Full itinerary is listed below and tickets are on sale now.

Packed with enough hits to fill a roadhouse jukebox, GOIN' 50 spans the band's entire musical career, from its 1969 debut, and its multi-platinum zenith during the Eighties, to its most-recent releases. This new retrospective includes an array from each of the 15 studio albums that guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and bassist Dusty Hill have recorded since 1970. Two bonus tracks, "Salt Lick" and "Miller's Farm" - a single and b-side respectively - were recorded in 1969 by the original incarnation of ZZ Top.

The first disc of GOIN' 50 focuses on the irresistible FM-radio hits that hooked the first generation of ZZ Top fans during the Seventies and early-Eighties with songs like "La Grange," "Tush," "Cheap Sunglasses," "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide," and "Pearl Necklace."

The additional disc explores the steady stream of hits the band released between 1983 and 1991 that made them international superstars, including six Top 40 tracks: "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Legs," "Sleeping Bag," "Stages," "Rough Boy," and "Velcro Fly."

GOIN' 50 closes with a selection of songs recorded between 1992 and 2016 that find the band returning to its blues roots for fresh inspiration on tracks like "Pincushion," "What's Up With That," "Rhythmeen," and "I Gotsta Get Paid." The set's final two tracks - live versions of "Waitin' For The Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago" - are taken from the band's most recent release, Live Greatest Hits from Around the World (2016).

DAVID BOWIE
(WITH JOHN "HUTCH" HUTCHINSON)

THE 'MERCURY' DEMOS 1-LP BOXED SET FEATURING PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED DAVID BOWIE RECORDINGS

SET FOR RELEASE ON PARLOPHONE JUNE 28

As part of the ongoing celebrations marking 50 years since David Bowie's first hit, "Space Oddity," and following the recent Spying Through A Keyhole and Clareville Grove Demos collections, Parlophone is releasing a further set of recordings known as THE 'MERCURY' DEMOS.

THE 'MERCURY' DEMOS are ten early Bowie recordings captured live in one take to a Revox reel to reel tape machine in Bowie's flat in spring 1969, with accompaniment from John "Hutch" Hutchinson on guitar and vocals.

The version of "Space Oddity" from THE 'MERCURY' DEMOS, originally released with edits on the Sound & Vision boxed set, is presented here in its true context for the first time. The other nine recordings on the album are all previously unreleased. In addition to the Bowie originals, the session also includes the Roger Bunn composition "Life Is A Circus" (which features in an earlier demo version on the Clareville Grove Demos set) and the Lesley Duncan composition "Love Song," later recorded by Elton John for his Tumbleweed Connection album. Bowie's own "Conversation Piece" is announced as a new song and "Janine" features a short, 19-second section sung to the melody of The Beatles' "Hey Jude."

The session was a basic recording of the "Bowie & Hutch" duo's set list at the time and was committed to tape at the request of Mercury Records A&R man, Calvin Mark Lee, who wanted the tracks to send them to his boss Bob Reno. Both Lee and Reno are referenced during the 41-minute recording, and the demos were key in securing Bowie his recording deal with Mercury Records.

THE 'MERCURY' DEMOS set will come in a replica of the original tape box and will feature one LP, a print, two photo contact sheets, and sleeve notes by Mark Adams. The labels of the LP feature the same EMIDISC acetate styling as Spying Through A Keyhole and Clareville Grove Demos with the song titles in Bowie's own handwriting.
