JONI MITCHELL ANNOUNCES HOLLYWOOD BOWL SHOW SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2024
THE ‘JONI JAM’ RETURNS FEATURING BRANDI CARLILE

LOS ANGELES – Today, nine-time Grammy® Award Winner, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Kennedy Center Honoree, Gershwin-prize winner, and music icon Joni Mitchell announces her first show in Los Angeles since 2000 to take place at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Mitchell’s live return to California will feature Brandi Carlile and the Joni Jam. Tickets will be available for Joni’s presale on Wednesday, January 31 and the tickets for the general public will go on sale Friday, February 2. Tickets will be available for purchase here.

This Sunday Joni Mitchell will perform at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards. This will be Mitchell’s first-ever performance at the GRAMMY Awards®; she is currently nominated for Best Folk Album (Joni Mitchell at Newport). Mitchell received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, having been described as "one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era" and "a powerful influence on all artists who embrace diversity, imagination and integrity".

In the past two years, Mitchell has triumphantly returned to the stage. First, at Newport Folk Festival in 2022, and this past June, she headlined a once-in-a-lifetime “Joni Jam” at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington. Some featured guests included Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlan, Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, Wendy and Lisa of Prince’s Revolution, Lucius and more.  Mitchell’s show at The Gorge was her first ticketed show in 20 years.

Mitchell’s live return was commemorated earlier this year with Grammy-nominated JONI MITCHELL AT NEWPORT, the live album released by Rhino on CD and 2-LP black vinyl produced by close collaborator Brandi Carlile, along with Mitchell and featured liner notes by Cameron Crowe.

Over the past three years, Mitchell's expansive musical career has been archived through Grammy® Award-winning historical boxed sets released via Rhino Records. The Archives, Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967), Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971), and Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975) feature unreleased home, live, and radio recordings of Mitchell's illustrious songwriting and singing.

Her most recent Grammy win came in 2022 when the first volume of her ongoing Joni Mitchell Archives series earned the award for Best Historical Album.

Today, Mitchell’s influence is undeniable. The Kennedy Center Honors recognized her lifetime contribution to American culture in 2021. In 2023, she was awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at an all-star tribute concert in Washington, D.C.

Machine Head: Super Deluxe Edition

3-CD/LP/Blu-ray Set With Previously Unreleased Concert Recording, Multiple Mixes, And Remastered Sound Arrives On March 29

New Stereo And Dolby Atmos Mixes By Dweezil Zappa

LOS ANGELES – Deep Purple unleashed one of the best guitar riffs since the invention of rock and roll with “Smoke On The Water,” a song dubbed the Beethoven’s 5th of hard rock. Since its 1972 debut on Machine Head, the song and the album have left an indelible mark on music, inspiring countless bands around the world.

Rhino honors the album’s enormous legacy with a comprehensive version introducing new mixes and previously unreleased live recordings. MACHINE HEAD: SUPER DELUXE EDITION will be available on March 29 as a 3-CD/LP/Blu-ray.

Highlighting the collection are several different versions of the album, including new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes by Dweezil Zappa. The 1974 quadraphonic mix and a newly remastered version of the original album are also featured, adding depth to the extraordinary set. Zappa’s newly remixed stereo version of “Smoke On The Water” is available today digitally. Listen HERE.

The Super Deluxe Edition also contains two captivating live performances. The first, recorded on March 9, 1972, at the Paris Theatre in London, captures the group’s unrivaled stage presence during the “Machine Head Tour.” The second, previously unreleased, was recorded in April 1971 at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland. The band planned to record Machine Head there that December, but the venue burned down right before the sessions began, an event immortalized in “Smoke On The Water.”

In the aftermath, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, and drummer Ian Paice relocated to the nearby Grand Hotel (empty for the winter season) to record the album. Despite the chaos, the band managed to create its most successful album ever, topping the U.K. album chart and cracking the Top 10 in the U.S., earning a double platinum certification in 1986.

The previously unreleased Montreux concert promises to be a highlight for fans. The audience recording covers songs the band recorded prior to Machine Head, including “Child In Time” (from 1969’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra), “Speed King” (from 1970’s Deep Purple in Rock), and “Strange Kind Of Woman” (from 1971’s Fireball ).

The new Dolby Atmos and 2024 mixes provide fresh and immersive perspectives on this classic album and were made by Zappa using the original tapes. In the liner notes, Zappa says: “It’s one of those records where I think, ‘How did they come up with this?’ It’s got classical influences in the guitar and the keyboard, but then it’s got the blues and there’s little bits of funkiness. And you have this singer who has the most killer voice. All these things come together in a way where it doesn’t sound like commercial music, yet people got really excited about it. It’s a fascinating recipe.”

He earned acclaim as the fastest rapper in the world, holding the 1992 Guinness World Record title after his debut Atlantic Records release, Resurrection. Following his debut, Twista gained widespread recognition with his 1997 RIAA platinum-certified album Adrenaline Rush.

ALICE COOPER

Billion Dollar Babies “Trillion Dollar” Deluxe Edition

3-LP And 2-CD Versions With Remastered Sound, Outtakes, Live Tracks, And More Arriving March 8

LOS ANGELES – “Hello Hooray,” a new version of Billion Dollar Babies, is on the way as Alice Cooper’s delightfully subversive sixth album returns in all its snakeskin glory for an extended 50th-anniversary celebration. After hitting #1 on the album charts in America and the U.K. in 1973, the record remains a highwater mark for the original lineup, featuring hits like “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “Elected.”

BILLION DOLLAR BABIES: “Trillion Dollar” DELUXE EDITION will be available from Rhino on March 8 on 3-LP and 2-CD. Both feature a newly remastered version of the original album, along with bonus material, including studio outtakes, single mixes, and an electrifying 1973 concert recording. In the vinyl edition, the gatefold cover faithfully replicates the original’s textured snakeskin wallet design and comes complete with a $1 billion dollar bill tucked inside.

An instant smash when it was released in March 1973, Billion Dollar Babies delivered a theatrical mix of hard rock and glam laced with macabre lyrics that explored wealth, decadence, and fame’s darker side. Newly remastered, the platinum-certified album sounds better than ever. The set also features outtakes (“Coal Black Model T”), single mixes (“Mary Ann”), and “Slick Black Limousine,” which originally came out on flexi-disc within an issue of the British rock paper New Musical Express.

The “Trillion Dollar” Deluxe Edition also features a live show recorded in Texas in April of 1973, during the “Billion Dollar Babies” tour. The powerful performance includes live versions of many of the album’s tracks, highlights including “Elected” and “Hello Hooray,” along with several of the band’s earlier hits, including “I’m Eighteen” and “School’s Out.”

The LP and CD versions both come with an oral history of the album and the bonus tracks by the surviving band members – Alice Cooper, Dennis Dunaway, Michael Bruce, and Neal Smith – and Bob Ezrin, who produced the album. (Sadly, guitarist Glen Buxton died in 1997)

In the notes, Cooper recalls writing “I Love The Dead” and “Sick Things.” He says, “We were writing those songs looking at each other, and every time we’d write a line I’d say, ‘Oh, this is gonna kill them. Oh, they’re gonna hate us on this one.’ But at the same time, it was almost like an Edgar Allan Poe short story when you listen to ‘I Love The Dead.’ I tried to write that the way Vincent Price would sing it.”

All Titles Issued On Blu-ray With Quadraphonic And Hi-Res Stereo

LOS ANGELES – Today, Rhino releases another set of high-quality quadraphonic releases, back in circulation after nearly 50 years; this next set features Average White Band’s Self-Titled (1974), Gil Evans’ Svengali (1973), Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys (1974) and WAR’s The World Is A Ghetto (1972).

Available now, each title makes its Blu-ray debut with both a quadraphonic and 192/24 stereo mix. Currently exclusive to Rhino.com, with limited quantities at Warner stores internationally, each title retails for $24.98, with a bundle of all four available for $79.98. Fans can also mix and match any four Quadio titles from the series for $78.98.

Quadraphonic sound, or 4.0 surround sound, utilizes four audio channels connected to four speakers positioned at the corners of a listening space. The multi-tracked audio is mixed dimensional, immersing the listener in an expansive soundscape.

Steve Woolard, Director of A&R for the Quadio series, states, “It’s been exciting to see the overwhelmingly positive reception with the relaunch of the Quadio series. These are transferred from the original half-inch four-channel masters at 192/24 resolution and sound amazing. Considering they’ve been in the vault for 50 years, the tapes were in pristine condition and needed no tweaks or fixes. They sound as fresh, rich, and powerful as the day they were created. And, of course, there’s also a 192/24 stereo program from the two-track master as well. Just because.”

Scottish funk group Average White Band’s self-titled sophomore album dominated the charts after its 1974 release, with the hit track “Pick Up the Pieces” peaking at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Gil Evans, renowned jazz composer and arranger, released his live orchestral jazz album Svengali in 1973, featuring a star-studded lineup of jazz musicians, including Ted Dunbar, Howard Johnson, David Sanborn, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, and more.

Randy Newman's concept album Good Old Boys explored the social and economic issues of the Deep South and found commercial success, peaking at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 and featuring the tracks “Louisiana 1927” and “Every Man a King.” The 1973 Billboard Album of the Year, WAR’s The World Is A Ghetto, saw the group leaning towards a progressive soul and jazz sound. The record housed the gold-certified tracks “The Cisco Kid” and “The World Is A Ghetto.”

Rhino’s Quadio series will continue to dig deep into Warner’s archives to reintroduce the greatest hits from Rock, Blues, R&B, and more in their highly anticipated quadraphonic sound. Audiophiles can expect more amazing quadraphonic experiences from Rhino in the future.
