DIRE STRAITS: THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978-1991

All Six Of The Band’s Studio Albums Will Be Available In 6-CD, 8-LP 180-gram Vinyl, And Digital Versions From Rhino On October 9

On October 9, Rhino will release CD and LP sets of all six of Dire Straits’ studio albums. Dire Straits is a band that straddled the globe with their sophisticated guitar rock, wedded to literate story-telling lyrics. Emerging on the UK club and pub circuit in 1977, Dire Straits were led by charismatic singer-songwriter, record producer, and composer Mark Knopfler. Considered one of the most successful musicians the UK has ever produced, he is often cited as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

DIRE STRAITS: THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978-1991 will be available on October 9 as a six-CD collection for $39.98. The albums will come in a deluxe clamshell box, with the CDs housed in mini-LP style cardboard wallets, and each album will include a beautiful poster with the original sleeve artwork (including lyrics and credits). The set will also be available on the same day as a newly re-cut eight-LP collection on 180-gram vinyl for $174.98. Both versions are available for pre-order now.

Dire Straits’ sound defined the late 70s and early 80s with monster hits such as “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo And Juliet,” “Money For Nothing” and “Walk Of Life.” Dire Straits’ 1985 album Brothers In Arms, a global Number 1 and double Grammy® Award winner, is one of the world’s best selling albums. After releasing their final album “On Every Street” in 1991, Knopfler called time on Dire Straits in 1995 and set off on a new path as a solo artist.

THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978-1991 features the albums Dire Straits (1978), Communiqué (1979), Making Movies (1980), Love Over Gold (1982), Brothers In Arms (1985) and On Every Street (1991).

SOMETHING IN THE AIR (LIVE PARIS 99) is a 15-track live album, featuring 12 previously unreleased recordings and three tracks used as B-sides for singles from the HOURS… album. The Elysée Montmartre performance was one of only seven full shows performed during the promotion of the HOURS… album. For this special limited run of gigs Bowie dug deep into his back catalog making these shows particularly memorable. Standout tracks include “Can’t Help Thinking About Me,” first released in 1966 and not performed live in over 30 years, “Word On A Wing” from STATION TO STATION was reinstated into the set after an absence of 23 years, 'Drive-In Saturday' had not been performed since 1974, and  HOURS… track “Something In The Air” made its live debut at this performance.

SOMETHING IN THE AIR (LIVE PARIS ‘99)  was recorded live at the Elysée Monmartre, mixed by Mark Plati, and features Bowie’s vocals backed by Page Hamilton - guitar, Gail Ann Dorsey - bass, vocals, Plati – guitar, Sterling Campbell – drums, Mike Garson – piano, keyboards, synthesisers, and Emm Gryner and Holly Palmer –backing vocals.

“Shakedown Stream” Series Will Continue Periodically Going Forward,
Starting With Legendary Sunshine Daydream Concert Film On August 27

LOS ANGELES – Since debuting in April, the Grateful Dead’s streaming concert series “Shakedown Stream” has become a welcomed Friday evening distraction to millions of Dead Heads new and old, while raising nearly $250,000 for various charities. The spirited, live pre-shows have seen hosts Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux and historian Gary Lambert joined by musical luminaries including David Crosby, John Mayer, Branford Marsalis, and Bruce Hornsby, as well as band members Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, and Donna Jean Godchaux. This Friday, August 7, will see “Shakedown Steam” conclude its run as a weekly series, shifting to a more periodic cadence going forward. The final weekly “Shakedown Stream” will feature an unseen show from the Grateful Dead vault from World Music Theater in Tinley Park, Illinois on July 21, 1990. Bob Weir will once again join the live pre-show.

The final weekly “Shakedown Stream” begins this Friday, August 7, at 8PM EST on the official Grateful Dead YouTube Channel and coincides with “The Days Between,” the annual Dead Head celebration of Jerry Garcia’s life that spans the day he was born (August 1, 1942) and the day he died (August 9, 1995). 2020 marks 25 years since Garcia’s passing. The event is also is part of Daze Between, a virtual celebration of the life and music of Garcia, with charity donations going to the Rex Foundation, the non-profit charity founded by the Grateful Dead.

Although the “Shakedown Stream” series will be shifting away from its weekly cadence following this Friday, Dead Heads will not have to wait long for their Grateful Dead streaming fix. The next “Shakedown Stream” is already scheduled for Thursday, August 27 and will feature the legendary Grateful Dead concert film Sunshine Daydream, which captures the band’s live show from 48 years ago to the day (August 27, 1972) from Veneta, Oregon. The film offers a snapshot of the band at the peak of its playing prowess with memorable performances of “China Cat Sunflower,” “Jack Straw,” “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Bird Song” and a mind-melting version of “Dark Star” that stretches over 30 minutes. The stream will also benefit the Rex Foundation, carrying on the tradition of the original concert, which itself was a benefit concert for the Ken Kesey family’s Springfield Creamery.

“Shakedown Stream” was conceived as a platform for Dead Heads of all ages to virtually congregate during the challenging days the world currently faces and connect in a familiar way, via a Grateful Dead show. Fans are encouraged to submit questions for Lemieux, Lambert, and each week’s special guest in advance at the “Shakedown Stream” submission page with a limited number being answered during the live pre-show.

While it’s true that to musicians especially, Coltrane’s fiercely adventurous harmonic imagination is the most absorbing aspect of his developing style, the more basic point is that for many non-musician listeners, Coltrane at his best has an unusually striking emotional impact.” – Nat Hentoff, original liner notes for Giant Steps (1960)

You can tag this LP as one of the important ones. – Ralph Gleason, Down Beat (1960)

Everyone, even those who have had reservations about Coltrane, should hear this set. – Mait Edey, The Jazz Review (1960)

History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. – Lindsay Planer, AllMusic

LOS ANGELES – John Coltrane’s Giant Steps – the influential jazz saxophonist’s first album with Atlantic Records – continues to astound and inspire listeners 60 years after its release. Consistently lauded in music histories, Giant Steps was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 2001 and went gold in 2018. To celebrate this seminal album’s six-decade anniversary, Rhino has remastered Giant Steps and all 28 of its surviving sessions outtakes for two new collections. A trailer for the new release is available here.

GIANT STEPS: 60th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available on September 18 as a 180-gram double-LP set ($31.98) and as a double-CD set ($19.98) and is available for pre-order here. Both versions include the newly remastered version of the original album plus eight alternate takes. The recordings come packaged in a replica of the original sleeve and labels used for the album’s first stereo pressing, and the packages, each with a booklet, include photos, never-before-seen images of Atlantic Records ephemera, original liner notes, and new liner notes written by Grammy®-winning music historian, Ashley Kahn. As a special bonus, fans who order the 2-LP set from Rhino.com will receive a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single disc featuring alternate takes of “Giant Steps” and “Naima.”

The other anniversary release is GIANT STEPS: 60th ANNIVERSARY SUPER DELUXE EDITION, which will be available to download and stream on September 18. The 35-track collection includes the original album, eight alternate takes, and 20 additional outtakes, all of which are newly remastered. Until now, many of the outtakes were only available on the 1995 set: The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings.

Giant Steps was recorded in 1959 at Atlantic Studios in New York City. The album features Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Paul Chambers on double bass, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Art Taylor on drums on all songs except for “Naima,” which features Jimmy Cobb on drums and Wynton Kelly on piano. It’s extraordinary to note that Coltrane began principal recording sessions for Giant Steps less than two weeks after finishing his work with Miles Davis on Kind of Blue, which became the best-selling jazz album in history.

Considered a landmark in modern jazz improvisation, Giant Steps earned a rare honor in 2004 when the album was selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Recording Registry. It is well known for Coltrane’s exploration into third-related chord movements, which are now known as ‘Coltrane changes.’ Several compositions on the album have become jazz standards, including the ballad “Naima” (named for his wife) and the title track.

In the new liner notes that accompany the vinyl and CD sets, Kahn details the album’s origins and eloquently writes about its lasting impact, while interweaving quotes and commentary from Coltrane’s peers, critics, and family. “And yet…Giant Steps is Exhibit A of how Coltrane’s obsession with the inner mechanics of music could not—and did not—impede his lyrical priority as a soloist, nor his compositional knack for inventing memorable, deeply entrancing melodies, says Kahn. “It never trips over its own intricacies, never loses sight that it is indeed music. The title track connects with an altogether hip, finger-snapping affect. “Cousin Mary” is a marvel of blues simplicity and smoky, late-night vibe; “Mr. P. C.” a burner fired by a toe-curling, R&B feel. “Naima” stands as one of Coltrane’s most wistful romantic statements, and “Syeeda’s Song Flute” one of his most playful. “Countdown” is a dizzying slalom down a mountainside, while “Spiral” thrills with a more relaxed energy, a gear-shifting exercise.”

“‘People like to talk about Giant Steps as a test for young horn players and how he’s breaking new ground with some of the pieces,’ says Ravi Coltrane, son of John, who was born in 1965 and grew up in Southern California and is one of many reed players who have spent countless hours with the music. “‘But it’s the accessibility that stands out for me. The accessibility, despite how challenging some of the material is. It’s still all very listenable and very joyful. John’s music is a joy to study and to play. It’s a joy to listen to.’”

Kahn concludes, “It remains one of the most talked-about albums of the modern era, a set of music all should have and absorb. It is music that has lived up to the grandiosity of its title: the first, yet not final, of John Coltrane’s fully realized statements, a point along a comet-like path of creative genius, an indelible marker on the timeline of popular music. It is a jazz classic recognized far beyond jazz circles. What more could a true artist hope to achieve?”

BLACK SABBATH CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR ICONIC ALBUM PARANOID

VINYL SUPER DELUXE EDITION OUT OCTOBER 9

Five-LP Collection Includes Original Album Plus Rare Quad Mix
Along With The Vinyl Debut Of Two 1970 Concerts

LOS ANGELES - Wildly regarded as innovators of the musical genre which came to be known as Heavy Metal, legendary Birmingham-bred Black Sabbath celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2020 of their multi-million selling album Paranoid with a 5-LP edition released on October 9, featuring the vinyl debut of two 1970 concerts.

PARANOID: SUPER DELUXE EDITION includes the original album, in addition to a rare 1974 Quad Mix of the album folded down to stereo, plus two concerts from 1970, from Montreux and Brussels, that are pressed on vinyl for the first time. The five-LP set comes with a hardbound book with extensive liner notes featuring interviews with all four band members, rare photos, and memorabilia, a poster, as well as a replica of the tour book sold during the Paranoid tour. The collection is available for pre-order now at the Rhino.com store for $109.98.

After the success of the band's self-titled debut in early 1970, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward returned that fall with Paranoid. The record became the band's first album to top the U.K. charts and has sold more than 4 million copies in the U.S. alone. Today, songs like "War Pigs," "Planet Caravan," "Iron Man," and of course, "Paranoid," continue to inspire a new generation of musicians around the world.

PARANOID: SUPER DELUXE EDITION first two LPs feature the original album plus a Quadraphonic Mix of the album. Originally released on vinyl and 8-track cartridge in 1974, but subsequently long out of print, the Quad Mix has now been made available as a fold-down to stereo mix on vinyl for this set.

The collection's final three LPs mark the official vinyl debut of two 1970 live performances. The first was recorded on August 31 in Montreux, Switzerland shortly before the release of Paranoid. It captures the band, already a tight musical unit, thundering through new songs like "Hand Of Doom" and "Iron Man" while mixing in "N.I.B." and "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" from their debut album. The second concert was recorded a few months later in Brussels during the band's performance for Belgian television. Unofficial versions of this classic show have circulated in the past, but they've never sounded this good.
