LOS ANGELES – Paul Shaffer formed what soon became dubbed The World’s Most Dangerous Band back in 1982 and, for over three decades, they ruled the late night musical landscape.  After a 24-year gap since their first album, "The World's Most Dangerous Party" produced by Todd Rundgren, the eponymous PAUL SHAFFER & THE WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS BAND features appearances by an all-star pan-demographic lineup  including guest  vocalists Dion, Jenny Lewis, Bill Murray, Darius Rucker, Shaggy, and Valerie Simpson. Shaffer and bandmates Will Lee and Felicia Collins round out the lead vocal duties.

PAUL SHAFFER & THE WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS BAND will be available from Sire Records on March 17 on CD for $18.98. The collection will also be released digitally. The group will tour behind the album with a string of shows that begins on April 1 in New York.

Shaffer played keyboards in the “Saturday Night Live” house band during the show’s paradigm-shifting first five seasons (becoming a featured on-camera player as well, e.g. his iconic impression of rock impresario Don Kirshner) before forming what Letterman soon named The World’s Most Dangerous Band in 1982 when he became musical director and sidekick on “Late Night With David Letterman.” After more than a decade on NBC, Shaffer and the band departed for CBS for a new show (“Late Show With David Letterman.” Although the band changed their name to “The CBS Orchestra”, the core lineup remained the same, adding Felicia Collins on guitar as well as a horn section.

All in all, Shaffer and the group spent over three decades living up to the band’s original name as they played to millions of television viewers five nights a week. Now, for the first time in  25 years, Shaffer and the band have re-claimed the moniker of The World’s Most Dangerous Band, recorded their first album together in 24 years, and will be embarking on a North American tour  this spring in support of the release. Joining Shaffer are Felicia Collins (guitar), Anton Fig (drums), Will Lee (bass), and Sid McGinnis (guitar), with Tom Malone, Frank Greene, and Aaron Heick (horns).

"Getting to record with a band which has played together for several decades was magical. We're so comfortable playing together, we finish each other's licks!” says Shaffer. “The wonderful friends, old and new, who guested on vocals were a dream come true for us. They poured their hearts and souls into our music, and we thank them profusely.”

The new album was produced by Richard Gottehrer, whose career writing and producing music began in the early Sixties at the Brill Building, and executive produced by Seymour Stein. Together with Jerry Goldstein and Bob Feldman, Gottehrer wrote several massive hits, including “My Boyfriend’s Back” and “Hang On Sloopy.” The trio also wrote “Sorrow,” a song recorded by a number of artists, including David Bowie for his 1973 covers album, Pin Ups. On this album, singer Jenny Lewis joins the band for a heartfelt, tranquil version of the track, dedicated to Bowie. The song is available to preview now at https://smarturl.it/JLSorrow

Bill Murray has a long history with Shaffer, who played piano for his popular “Saturday Night Live” character Nick the Lounge Singer, and last year served as MC for the actor’s Netflix special “A Very Murray Christmas”, for which he received his fourth EMMY® nomination. On the new album, Murray and Shaffer team up once again on a freewheeling romp through “Happy Street.”

The talented band puts a tropical spin on Vince Guaraldi’s Grammy-winning track “ Cast Your Fate To The Wind” with a little help from rapper Shaggy, and then switches gears to lay down a slinky groove for Darius Rucker’s cover of Timmy Thomas’ hit “Why Can’t We Live Together,” a song that’s been  covered by everyone from Santana to Sade.

GIMME DANGER: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE

The Soundtrack To Jim Jarmusch's Acclaimed Documentary About
The Stooges Mixes Album Tracks With Studio Outtakes And More

Available Digitally From Rhino On January 13

LOS ANGELES - Celebrated filmmaker Jim Jarmusch says Gimme Danger - his critically acclaimed documentary about The Stooges - is more an "essay" than a document. "It's our love letter to possibly the greatest band in rock 'n' roll history..."

Named an Official Selection to the New York, Toronto and Cannes film festivals, Gimme Danger presents the band's story and explores its influences and impact, complete with some never-before-seen footage and photographs. After a run in select theaters, the film will be available via on-demand outlets beginning January 31.

Rhino offers the perfect complement to the film with GIMME DANGER: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE. This new compilation will be available digitally on January 13 for $9.99. The same music will arrive on CD February 24 for $14.98. The LP version comes out on April 7 for $21.98. Slightly truncated, the LP version features Stooges songs and has a selection of tracks previously only available on CD and digital formats, including the vinyl debut of the outtake "Lost In The Future."

The digital and CD versions include 14 songs that focus on the group's first three studio albums - The Stooges, Fun House, and  Iggy and The Stooges' Raw Power - and feature band members Iggy Pop, Ron and Scott Asheton, Dave Alexander, and James Williamson.

Both Jarmusch and Pop helped select songs for the soundtrack, which mixes indelible studio recordings ("I Wanna Be Your Dog," "1969" and "Loose") with rare studio outtakes ("I Got A Right," "I'm Sick Of You," and "Asthma Attack").

Fellow Detroit natives MC5 make an appearance on the collection as well with "Ramblin' Rose" from the group's 1969 debut, Kick Out The Jams. The oldest songs on the collection pre-date The Stooges and spotlight Pop with his previous bands, the Iguanas ("Again And Again") and Prime Movers Blues Band ("I'm A Man").

Emerging from Ann Arbor Michigan amidst a countercultural revolution, The Stooges' powerful and aggressive style of rock-n-roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s. Jarmusch says: "No other band in rock 'n' roll history has rivaled The Stooges' combination of heavy primal throb, spiked psychedelia, blues-a-billy grind...There is no precedent for The Stooges, while those inspired by them are now legion."

January 4 To Be Proclaimed “Day Of The Doors” In Los Angeles In Special Ceremony In Venice

LOS ANGELES – 50 years ago today in 1967, The Doors broke through to the other side for the first time with its eponymous debut on Elektra Records. The Doors would go on to sell millions of copies and made stars of John Densmore, Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek, and Jim Morrison. Today, the album is widely considered to be one of the all-time-classic rock and roll debuts.

To celebrate this landmark recording’s 50th anniversary, the band will release THE DOORS: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION. This 3CD/LP set will be available on March 31 for a list price of $64.98. In addition, the music will also be available digitally.

To coincide with this, today (January 4) will be proclaimed “Day Of The Doors” in the city of Los Angeles. The proclamation will be made this afternoon by Los Angeles Councilmember Mike Bonin during a public event at the intersection of Pacific and Windward Avenues, the location of the iconic “Venice” sign. Founding Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger will be on hand at the event as will family members of the late Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison.

Packaged in a 12 x 12 hardcover book, THE DOORS: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION includes a remastered version of the album’s original stereo mix, available on CD for the first time in a decade and remastered for the first time in nearly 30 years. The album’s original mono mix was also remastered for this set and is making its CD debut here. An LP-version of the mono mix is also included. The third disc features a live performance from The Matrix in San Francisco recorded just weeks after The Doors was released. Music journalist David Fricke provides detailed liner notes for the set, which includes a selection of rare and previously unseen photographs.

THE DOORS: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION offers a rare opportunity to hear the band on the verge of superstardom with live performances recorded during a March 7, 1967 show at the Matrix in San Francisco. The Matrix recordings heard on this deluxe edition were sourced from the recently discovered, original tapes, previously thought to be lost. The Matrix recordings originally released in 2008 were from a third-generation source, so the sound quality of the versions debuting here is second to none.

Packed with electrifying performances, the disc contains live versions of eight tracks on The Doors, including “Twentieth Century Fox,” “The Crystal Ship” and “Back Door Man.”

DAVID BOWIE SOUND AND VISION

SET FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 10, 2017

LOS ANGELES - February 10, 2017 sees the release of the latest special limited David Bowie 7" picture disc, the 40th anniversary edition of SOUND AND VISION.

Originally released in the UK on February 11th, 1977, SOUND AND VISION was taken from the groundbreaking album Low, the first of the so-called "Berlin Trilogy" of albums. The song gave its name to Bowie's anthology boxed set and it's accompanying greatest hits tour in 1990 and is the only track actually performed by him in his stage play Lazurus.

The A-side features a brand new remaster of the track and the flip side sees the first physical release of the 2013 remix of the song. The stripped back remix by Sonjay Prabhakar was originally done for a Sony Experia advertisement and utilizes the original lead vocals and Mary Hopkin's backing vocal with a new piano part.
